Bendigo 2009

Before i start, this is sh!t i just wrote this huge thing out and it didn't post.
Anyway, this is the only Bendigo game i get to go to for the year, so really enjoyed it.

Michael Hurley - The kid is all class. Just looked to good for this level. Just has great body strength in the marking contests, and showed this both forward and back. A real player.

Darcy Daniher - Pretty quiet first half. Tried to play him forward and back in the 2nd half, but played better off half back. Just continually wanted to run and handball. Wasn't overally impressed but can see why Knights likes him, suits his game style.

Tyson Slattery - Played really well. I like this kid. A nice size, very athletic, excellent skills, and marked up with gaining 10-15m in a chase resulting in a great tackle and holding the ball. A shining light.

David Zaharakis - Was poor. Probably the worst of the Essendon listed players. I'm not too worried as he has shown us what he can do and is still only a first year player, but just couldn't get involved, wasn't his day today.

Jay Nash - Thank God for Hickmont, he must've heard me talking at quarter time, because sure enough, he played the rest of the game off of half forward, and it suits him like a dog with a bone. His skills and entry into the forward line stood out above all others. Well played Jay Nash.

David Myers - Best on, and by quite some way. I've been not neccesarily a critic of his, but been worried about him, and glad he came out and played really well today. And why did he play well? Because he was played in the midfield, not off the HBF. He just won clearance after clearance, and if not for an unlucky bounce or 2, would've had 3-4 goals to his name as well.

Jay Neagle - Played a typical Jay Neagle-esk game. Kick it to him 1-1, and he will dominate, took some strong marks, and excellent kick. Unfortunately only saw this 2-3 times today. Think Frankston saw him as our key, and he often was surrounded by 3-4 players. He played well, but would like to see him really dominate a game soon.

Leroy Jetta - Really happy with Leroy today. Reminded me a lot of Davey on Friday night. There would be ball up after ball up and Jetta would go in there, get the ball himself and work his way out of a pack and zoom away with pace and skill. Would like to see this a little more consistently, but very impressed with how he played today.

Bachar Houli - Was poor. It was good to see him really trying to focus on his defensive side and pressure, but in regards to getting the ball, just struggled to find it. When he had it, i will say that i liked his skills which is a good sign, but couldn't really get involved as much as he would've liked.

Tom Bellchambers - Killed it. Sensational game from Tommy, too big, too strong, and too mobile and athletic. Great work on the ground and took some nice marks, too good Tommy, a bright future for you.

Jarrod Atkinson - I feel sorry for the guy, he tries harder than anyone else out there, and the guy looked ok out there today, but unfortunately he just didn't quite look up to making a step up any time soon. I fear for his spot on the list, but i hope he stays as he threw his body in front of contests continually and could be a real effective shut down defender.

Michael Quinn - Played well. I can see why people are saying "He just needs to continue to play more games" but he was very effective up forward today, kicking 3. Always looked lively, one thing i would say is that he has no idea when the balls in the air, doesn't have a clue how to take a mark, but that's something to work on. Definately has a future. Really strong body also which surprised me.

John Williams - Did not play, Quinn in for him.

Just a few side notes:

- Myers leadership is outstanding. At every break, he was the one who took the initiative and spoke up, motivating the boys, and has a clear insight into how the game is played. When Frankston tried to start the push and shove near the end, Myers was the one who stood up for the team, Bendigo really lacks leadership.

- Knights went to Darcy and Bellchambers at 3/4 time and had in depth talks with them. Not sure what about.

- Frankston is the worst crowd ever! Stupid drum.

- Umpiring was terrible, clearly sucked in by the crowd, we got a shocking run.

Besides that, i've probably got a little bit more info on most players, just like examples from the game, if you have any questions, feel free to ask guys. Overall, a good day was had.

Shocking result if you ask me. The first 10 minutes was all one way traffic to our end. We had a 16 man zone from the kick outs and Frankston just keep giving us the ball and we ended up kicking about 1 goal 6 when we could of blown them out of the water.

Myers best game in a long time. Apart from his kicking for goal he was very good.

Jetta and Quinn swapped positions and i'd say both were a success. Jetta really seemed to enjoy playing back and rarely did the player he was opposed to have much of the ball. Backed himself and used his evasive skills well, disposal let him down.

Zaharakis played in the middle and was pretty quiet. As Ant has said fumbled when in the clear and just didnt provide much run.

Hurley was back and forward. Kicking skills are just elite and his contested marking and judging the ball on a windy day are as good as anyone.

Daniher started forward was pretty quiet, moved back and did a lot better.

Nash started forward, disposal was woeful, ended up in defence. Looked like he was primed for a big game but was just so-so. Needs to re-invent himself. If i was him i'd be demanding to play on-ball.

Houli had a day to forget. Decision making was questionable all day.

Neagle did ok but needed another target to take some of the pressure off. He would of been envious of the opposition forwards as the delivery and set up was much better than us.

Atkinson would have to be one of the laziest defenders going around. Multiple times he decides to stand 5 metres off his opponent when they had possesion and what happens, they go to his man. The only time he ran hard was when had the ball and then he would decide to handball to a stationary target and cause a turnover.

Bock and German both played ressies. I only saw the 2nd half and German had a heap of it. Bock would be better suited to playing here for the rest of the year.

Thanks to Ant, Casey and Lemon for your reports. We are ver lucky to get three reports from the same Bendigo game!

Good to hear Myers getting a run in the midfield. Very excited to hear about his clearance work.

Given the decision of moving Leroy to the back flank at times does anybody thing we are trying to see if he can develop into a Jarrod Harbrow type of player at the Bulldogs?

Glad to hear Bellchambers get through the game ok. Will be interesting to see if he plays seniors in the next few games given their importance to our season and how it will effect the balance of our backline.

Zaharakis said that his performance today was woeful
Hurley played well - looked better in defence and when he went forward the defence seemed to struggle
The delivery into Neagle wasn't flash - considering it was always a 3 on 1 contest

for those going in to the huddles at 1/4 and 3/4 time what are your impressions of hickmott? i have my doubts about his coaching ability - i would have thought the side he was coaching today had more talent than frankston given it contained the maximum number of afl players...is he poor tactically and motivation wise?

Hard to judge considering he basically a puppet for EFC. I dont think too many of the top VFL sides would be happy to allow the AFL coaches to speak to players individually at breaks. This is half the problem with the VFL, a couple of sides are in it to win and couple are about developing players and the rest trying to balance both. IMO some of his speeches hit the nail on the head but he keeps it very simple and I guess some players need a spray to get excited. He hasnt had much to work with in his time at Bendigo.

i heard knights on multiple occasions at vfl level and was impressed with the way he conducted himself. i've only heard hickmott on two occasions but walked away feeling less than inspired. i like the work he does at the club getting involved in training etc but can't see him amounting to anything as a coach - certainly not at afl level.

Does it matter. With Knights as senior coach the players are being used more in development positons than positions to win the game.
Hickmott may not be inspirational but he is a development coach and his hands are often tied as far as setting up the side to win games.

It is really no concern if he is not going to be an AFL coach. The only thing we need him to be is a good development coach. :)

fair comments - just interested to hear yours and others opinions on him who have probably heard/seen more of him than I.

But surely part of that is having half a brain himself. Sure he has to do what the EFC want, but he still has a personal impact in a number of areas. If he isn't teaching the right lessons and empahsising the right points in how he talks to the players during games then maybe he could be doing better.

I'm not saying that he isn't doing a good job, I've only heard him speak once or twice also, but I wasn't very impressed by him at those times.
