Axing talent league to increase the standard of local footy is akin to closing universities because we want the academic kids straight into the workforce from school. Put the extra work into developing and stretching their talent and everyone benefits in the long term.
Coates is far below aps schools football, in relation to talent, the coaching at aps schools and their setups are far ahead of the Coates League, aps kids only play Coates League after school footy finishes.

Youd rather have 40 kids travel all over the countryside for maybe 1 to get drafted. Id think kids would develop quicker playing senior football especially in the ovens and murray or geelong comps than under 18s. Look at the coaches, Schneider, Cresswell, Murray, heatley, Stevie j, neeld, watt, Henderson, Ross, saker all have better coaching records than whos on the puos coaching list or bushies, like scarlo was helping out Geelong clubs last year as an assistant.

Coates League had its place in the 90s up to the mid 2000s, but life, school football have gone past it now

It doesn't mean it should remain that way.
Hanging out with a bunch of former AFL players seeking to top up their Super doesn’t automatically equate to better, either.

Talking to a few that have done the aps combined with talent pathway, they prefer the coates league pathway due the high performance element for development as compared to aps which was all about results.

Im no saying i like the aps school comp, but its gone past the Coates League. We are asking 17 and 18 year old kids to travel in sime cases an hour or more each way to train and than 3+ hours most weekends and dedicate themselves to it with little chance of being drafted. School results go out the warz and lots give up the game after they finish in the Coates League.

My point is largely the same except the mass explosion in junior football at young ages is effectively going to kill senior competitions - the drop out rate at 15 is scary and once they’re gone they’re gone

We have comps at Under 10 level scored for points with premierships so that player loyalty points can be accrued for down the track that is insane

I’m not worried about the guns, it’s the cannon fodder battlers that get chewed up and spat out that community footy has relied upon that are walking away
The drop out rate of players , coincides as to when junior only comps stop offering the same amount of aligned teams , fancy that .
The future of community football is reliant on the removal of junior only leagues .

Can you clarify that for me please TRIB?

I'm probably not thinking clearly after work but not quite grasping what you're referring to here.

I can't get it clear in my head what you mean when you say, 'When junior only comps stop offering the same amount of aligned teams'.

Of interest to me due to a previous life in development and because you work in a role where the data you can access will provide real information, not AFL propaganda or the old fashioned 'cos that's how it's always been'. Important for future planning of junior footy in all regions.

If you look at the talent coming through a Pioneers program at the moment you dont need the pathway to identify the talent. Cody Walker is a huge talent but you didnt need to watch him play Pioneers to know that. The kid Thompson who is bottom age Under 18 Pioneers falls into the same category. My point is that Coates League is a mechanism for getting drafted but doesnt need to exist in its current format for these super talented players to make it to AFL lists. Imagine freeing up the rest of the players to Country Football every weekend of the season - the standard would increase dramatically.

Clubs can still nominate players to be scouted.

The AFL puts money into scouts to travel country side and watch talent. If they’re good enough, recruited to play a vfl game or two at the back end of the season.

I’m sure every club would love its best talent to be playing more home and away games, gets locals through the gates.

If you have to be nominated to be scouted you’re not getting drafted

There is a push to have kids play in junior only comps generally located within major cities / towns . This comes at the expense of smaller towns junior teams ( 4ths /3rds) as those kids are told junior only comps are where they need to play . The senior clubs in the major towns often form alliance to the junior comp and have multiple teams per age group . As the age group gues up in age the amount of teams per age group decreases to the point where you get to 3rds and there is only one team .
As the teams per age group decreases kids dreams they been told is their ticket to AFL is cut off and they give up the game . It is further compelled as the kids that did stay with their local club often have had greater opportunities , developed quicker and are targeted to play major league thirds .
Can’t confirm the statistics now but 10 years ago more kids were regularly drafted out of community leagues than premier leagues .

Hi all . Spider here.
I reside at Murchison , in the caravan park .
Take a strong following to the KDFL, GVFL & BFNL as of now . I’ve decided to support the team closest to where I live, and that is Strathfieldsaye . ( apologies broadford, I can’t see you lasting longevity,)
Hope my son doesn’t hate me for it (premiership player in gisborne 2002 flag under the great M Mcguane )
Echuca planning to move into the league would be nothing but fantastic for the area. A real shame for GV .

Also really enjoyed the recap in the local paper about practise matches . Gives outer towers like me a real insight of the league .

Anyways, thanks for reading & talk soon
Cheers Spider

I think this is a year that cooper jones from strathfieldsaye will really explode into the scene. If I was a betting man I would bet for him to win the Michelson. A FORCE TO HE RECKONED WITH. Mark my words

Very important player but not sure he will win Michelsen. Jones would be probably Straths most important player

Zano has been overlooked by werribee, which ive been surprised at, looks super fit, if he plays 7+ at strath he takes the Michelson

Remember his coming from a much lower league trying to break into a VFL side. He’ll be a work in progress throughout the year. To say he’ll win the Michelson from 7 games is a big call. Do you see him as comfortably the best player in the league?
