GISBORNE may be back on the winners’ list but coach Luke Saunders is still some way from realising his long-term hopes for the team after a 39-point win against Kangaroo Flat.
A nine-goal final quarter gave Gisborne breathing space as it retained fourth on the Bendigo Football League ladder with the 18.15 (123) to 12.12 (84) win.

who kicked 24 goals in a quarter?
I have always been a strong supporter of Kyneton staying in the BFNL (and still am) - but gee wizz!!!

That must just be sole destroying for committee and supporters. I think the club has three years to become competitive in the BFNL or, to be fair to its supporters, it must look at other options - merging, leaving the BFNL, whatever.

I am not trying to knock the club when it is down. I would very much like it to succeed in the BFNL, but its supporters must be given something to hang on to.

Steven Oliver and the BFNL Board - you wouldn't even consider/discuss the two division Gold Fields competition on the basis 'Bendigo football is healthy'. Well you are the ones that administer the BFNL, it is your responsibilty to deal with this issue in a public way. Castlemaine and Maryborough also need your support.

Not being that familiar with the reasons why Kyneton are uncompetitive can someone please explain why? Surely a town of their population and proximity to Melb. should be more competitive.

Eaglehawk in the last quarter.
check your information..the game i was at eaglehawk did not kick 24 in any quarter..our kids dont get paid (unlike several bendigo sides where the money is drying up rapidly) so not much point giving match payments back..we are all about getting games into these boys and are prepared to cop the pain for this year..not going down the "spend at all cost" of previous years but have a long term plan with good juniors coming through. scores arent showing it but we are improving.

My information was the Bendigo FNL website. But it looks like it has since been corrected to 14 goals.

There's the link for you:

Noticed a Derrick Filo on the website's team sheet, i thought he was a non-playing coach.

Derrick would have liked to retire years ago but plays so the side has some structure in the forward line.

And at 43, still embarrasses some backline outfits when given the chance.

Would have been interesting to see how much more competitive the Tigers would have been this year if Condos had of hung around given he has kicked 86 goals already this year (before this week) but the Tigers are on the right path.

Hadn't noticed that Ray, but I'll listen out for it. Butch wasn't with us last weekend but it was a cracking game of footy.

Magpies led all day and had kicked a 50 metre goal in the dying seconds only to find a free had been paid for holding by the player sheperding.

Fair to say the Magpie camp wasn't pleased.

Popular media personality Ros Lanigan from the Weekly Times and WIN TV's Off the Bench to be guest speaker at the Strath Storm's sponsor's luncheon this Saturday at Tannery Lane, as the Storm battle for 2nd spot against Gisborne, in one of the BFNL matches of the year.

Interesting article on the back of today's Addy lads. I would be interested to hear the thoughts of you BFL people on it. My initial concern would be that the BFL would not be keen on the idea of no reserves side being fielded by the BFL Maryborough team. However it is good to see some lateral thinking and ideas being put out there. Good on em for thinking of ways to change their situation

Wow, how could two brothers be so different. You wouldnt get Shuan Filo coaching kids and helping a club develop their juniors. Good on you Derek.

Can't see any advantage for currant maryborough reserves players, I think if your not playing senior footy in the BFL the reserves have plenty of talent to test yourself against. There is no advantage in going to a lower ranked league there will be a lot of good honest country footy players give the game away

Yes I agree. Clubs like Maryborough, Castlemaine & Kyneton just cannot go on like they are if they are going to enjoy real success/play finals.

I would be nice if the BFNL Board itself could come up with some of these (and other) options - but I won't hold my breath waiting.

Great work !! Havent seen the radio at Gisborne games for a few years i reckon.

Great to see so many BenFL players picked in the final squad for the VCFL game this weekend.

Well done to Tom Waters who has come up from the RDFL to be a fantastic player for Gissy. So many kids come up a few levels and struggle to cope with the pace and the strength of the BenFL and BalFL. This kid is one of the very few to make their mark on a higher level comp.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Wondering when it will be announced that Essendon Football Club will be ceasing there links with Bendigo and heading back down the track of having a traditional stand alone reserves team in the VFL. Bendigo Bombers to be no longer with announcement to come in near future. Will this be good for local footy?
