News Bendigo split from EFC

I am STOKED - we tried this and failed when the AFL wouldn't issue another licence - now they have little choice 

It's simple, Bendigo is so poor that they severely hamper the progression of a) kids and b) players coming back through injury.

Fantastic news.

Exactly - if this results in Essendon having a reserves that isn't remarkably crap most seasons, it will be a significantly positive thing for the development of our senior list....and i wish Bendigo all the best. :thumbsu:

Excuse the newbie question, but what are the benefits how having a stand alone VFL ?
We play all our games at Tulla, we use our fitness staff, VFL team trains with us, easier to develop the kids and better rehab for injured players

If we did have a stand alone VFL team would they play at Tullamarine though? I was under the impression that the new facility would be for training only, in that provision (on a tangible scale anyway) wouldn't really be made for spectators. I would have thought an Essendon VFL team would play at Windy Hill, much like Collingwood VFL play at Victoria Park now.

That may be an option, not knowing what the Bowls Club will do with their new land

And you've come to this conclusion, how?

I like that you think that the club isn't prepared for this.

Simple.

The VFL are the final arbiters in how the arrangements for their competition will work.

It's one thing the clubs have come to an agreement - but, if the VFL doesn't approve of the arrangement for next year and/or the arrangements beyond that, then what happens?

At a time when the arrangement was working on so many fronts, the move for change doesn't appear to be all that warranted - and the fact that Bendigo itself has had to go down this road shows how badly the Essendon side of the arrangement has managed it.

It would appear that plenty of people in the Bendigo region have been burned by Essendon, throughout the decade of the arrangement being in place. Whether it was McMahon, McKissock, Horsburgh, Jackson (with his VFL role now not helping matters), Robson or Evans or all of the above - this arrangement has been managed extremely poorly.

We're the second richest club in Victoria. If we don't get what we want we'll make the AFL to change the VFL's mind. We'll use Collingwood as an example and point out how they broke off the arrangement with Williamstown and still got what they want, and how it will be grossly unfair on us that they get a license to play a stand-alone team.

The VFL are a subsidiary to the AFL. If the AFL give us clearance, so will the VFL. Considering that Bendigo broke off the agreement, the VFL will either force us to align ourselves with Frankston or Port Melbourne. Port won't do that, and we don't want another Bendigo situation with Frankston. Alternatively, they'll grant the second most powerful club in the AFL a stand-alone team which will mean no byes in the VFL. Win-Win for both parties. And the fact that the VFL will gain more revenue due to more games on a weekend, being able to get money from another club, and, you know, more people going to games.

But you know, they could do what you said, and lose money.

So pretty much nothing will change aside from the team name.

Will be minimal changes in 2012 - Probably expect Bendigo to play more locals in the team - To prepare for their stand alone team in 2012.

Seems to be a lot of unnecessary changing for changes sake - Bendigo under the current arrangements are Essendon's VFL team - EFC control all aspects of the operation.

Think that it is a baffling decision.

When Collingwood broke off the Williamstown arrangement, it was done under a previous Football Victoria administration. The current one, with Peter Jackson in charge of it, is of a different mind-set to the previous administration under Peter Schwab.

There were flow-on effects from that move - particularly in relation to North Melbourne and 50/50 split with Werribee and North Ballarat and Footscray with Williamstown. Both of these combined with North Melbourne leaving Port Melbourne who had previously been screwed over by Sydney.

Under this new administration, Preston (Northern Bullants) are no more - the Northern Blues are coming in next year - although I note there could be a spill of the current Preston board as a result, with a view to retaining Preston in the competition (source: Inside Football).

The VFL operates separately to the AFL - they control all VFL licences and operation of the competition itself. A lot of water has to go under the bridge as it were.

So what I've gleaned from this is:

"I know a few fans of Bendigo in the VFL that are annoyed".

Wasn't it only last year that people were stating how Essendon had saved that pissant of a club by pumping money into it?

The VFL is there to feed the AFL. Without us (Essendon/AFL), it'd be nothing more than any other sub-par country league.

We'll win, because we're better.

That may be an option, not knowing what the Bowls Club will do with their new land

What new land ?
They can not get anymore at WH as the oval has to stay as it is used for EDFL umpire training and finals.
The bowls club did not want to move as their current club house and new greens are only 6 years old and we wanted to bulldoze it to make the oval bigger.

Essendon reserves will play out of Windy Hill.

The AFL now has a lot more clout on the AFLVIC board with their man Peter Jackson in place.

I guess the question would then be, might Peter Jackson offer Essendon a stand alone licence due to the fact he was a bomber man? Might he deny us one and make us merge our seconds with some other team, due to the fact it was under his reign as CEO that we gave up the idea of stand alone?

Ben Duscher won the club B&F last night. Tory Dickson finished second, Ricky Dyson third. Matt Little and Michael Ross rounded out the top 5.

Pris dominated the voting whilst playing, and finished 6th I think, despite not polling in the second half of the year.

Tyson Slattery : Most Courageous
Matt Little : Goal Kicking award
Tom Campbell: Best 1st year player.

Edit: oh, and i believe that Essendon will appoint the coach for 2012.
