when you lose a player aged 30ish you can guarantee there are several blokes putting their hands up saying 'his spot is MINE'. this could well see a change in behaviour from players like buckley who have been fill ins so far, feeling the pressure to do the great things rather than the long term team things - much like the mentality you see in reserves players.

whether its buckley, or rounds, or someone else, there will be another clean possession runner in our list who takes his spot, and with another 15 games under their belt, will be more than useful come september.

its 12 months later than i expected, but we are seeing the absences of didak & johnson leading to kids being tried on a longer term basis to provide the next 10 year player.

IMO the only vital player we have lost is ball. and beams has done well to cover that spot. we are travelling ok for round 6.

Great season for us this year when it comes to serious injuries

3 Knee Recons and now a Shoulder Recon.

If people think our injury list will get better their kidding themselves. Basically have 4 guys out for the remainder of the year not counting Josh Thomas of course.

Just seems as though we are destined this year to have bad injuries.

this year is reminding me alot of 2010.Fraser,medhurst injured,o'bree retired, jolly didnt play the first half of the season ,presti injured on and off, didak playing injured at the end of the year, all the older players had their issues and the young players stepped up. And alot of it in this part of the season too.Just a thought:thumbsu: although luke ball is irreplacable. :)Marty clarke can have a chance to step into bennys role. dayne beams and sidey and blairy will keep improving. Lets just see how we go this saturday night.

It sucks for Johnno, but to be brutally honest, I don't see this hurting much.

Seems more akin to when we needed to realistically move O'Bree and Lockyer on to be able to win a flag.

He's been a great servant no doubt and at his best, was a real weapon for us, but even at his best he butchered the ball a LOT. He was nowhere near his best before getting hurt so I'd call it just about curtains now.

The real concern will be if there aren't players beating down the door to take his spot.

Aren't acl's normally 12 months? and why would Krak come back earlier than Macaffer?

The reason they're generally that long is due to how invasive the surgery is. Basically traditional surgery means that the whole knee needs to be cleaned out and ligaments replaced.

Krakouer's, for whatever reason, was claimed by Peter Jess to not be the standard operation so was therefore less invasive thus reducing the rehabilitation time to 6 months.

I digress to posters like TRS or Swoop if they feel differently on it though. I also have another theory on Krakouer but TBH it's not worth airing.

marty is not the speed we need for this role. we need someone with genuine pace to break lines.

who is gonna step up ?
I still thinkYagmoor is the one to do this job long term it did not work out for him on his debut but he is better than that,he is only 18 now and I have faith in him and our development that he will get there I also like Williams as well but further up the ground.

The real concern is that there are not players beating down the door. I do not agree with the posters who say that Johnson is not a great loss. He plays a role that is hard to duplicate with another player and he has experience. He does not butcher the ball a lot - this is a misconception people have of him.

He was one of our better players against Geelong in last year's granny. He is also a goal kicker. We cannot just keep losing players of the calibre of the 4 we have lost and expect that the premiership is going to be a cakewalk. If you want to become an optimist that's fine but don't expect everyone to swallow your sugar coated thoughts.

Given that the players you have named to fill Johnson's role are all VFL players and likely to stay that way this year, you are saying that there is no one ready made to step into his role this year. Yagmoor looks ordinary even in the VFL at this stage of his career.

He had the best kicking efficiency rate of any collingwood player over the last 3 years and was one of the highest in the AFL in 2010.

And losing Johno will hurt a lot. He is one the few line breakers on our list which is crucial to breaking open games especially finals when it is highly congested.

Lets hope he can get back by at least round 19-20 so he has 3 games in the VFL to get some footy fitness before the finals.

Makes losing Davis go from a minor loss to a crucial loss as well.
johnno is a clear head in a back line with obrien and shaw. He gave the team confidence that can not be replaced. Short term we will struggle but in 6ish weeks we will have found a way to play without him.

I think at this stage we only have shaw able to do this job ATM,on the question of Yagmoor IMO he will be a good player for us in the future, not many of us thought that Keeffe would make it but he is going alright and he is 3yrs older.

My opinion on Yagmoor is like most of my opinions positive which is where you and I differ on most things but they are both valid views,

Davis made his choice and that was up to him if he did not want to play for us F--- him,Shaw does have his brain fades but they are mostly off field his decision making on field is okay if we had the players available O,brien would already be in the 2,s if I had my way.

The difference between you and I on this issue is that you are looking toward the future, beyond this year, when Yagmoor may well become a good player and take over Davis's role, while my interest is in trying to win a premiership this year.

I believe that I am correct in saying that Yagmoor has been ordinary in the VFL. Many posters had him pencilled in to their side for this year, but the guy is clearly not ready to step up. You may well have shelved plans for a premiership. Just because I say someone is not setting the world on fire in the VFL does not mean that I do not hold out hope that the player will be useful down the track.

Simon Buckley can fill BJ's role
Maybe.
Definitely not as well.

I'm going to miss his slightly Mansonesque gate as he takes off on one of his arcing runs to get on his left and pump it inside 50.

I hope this is not the end for BJ.
One of the my favorites for many years.

Simon Buckley is certainly a candidate for Johnson's backline spot, though his kicking efficiency is probably going to hurt us. Still, if he can play as well as last week and not give away quite so many goals through errant kicks, he may prove an adequate replacement.

Benny didnt do it quite as well many years back either.

Buckley has a lot of Johnsons attributes, including the tendency for clangers. He can certainly run the lines.

Simon Buckley playing in place of Johnson is an awful thought. Ugh.

A summary of Simon Buckley:

Get Ball
Panic
Handball to player under pressure or kick as long as possible, often to advantage of opposition backmen
Chase opponent back towards goal
Ball kicked over top of head
Opponent has shot on goal

This is when he's not directly turning it over in dangerous areas of course.

Simon Buckley can fill BJ's role

This will be a fantastic opportunity for him to step up. I believe he showed this last week. Theres nothing wrong with Buckley, he just needs confidence and a chance.
