Television and stage star Bert Newton has reportedly been caught drink driving.

The host of Channel Ten's Good Morning Australia was stopped by a police patrol in Camberwell, in Melbourne's east, on Monday night and recorded a blood alcohol level just over the legal limit, the Herald Sun newspaper reported.

Mr Newton, 65, was taken to Richmond police station for a full breath test and the Herald Sun has been told he recorded a blood alcohol level of .058.

Newton issued a statement through the Ten network saying he had learnt his lesson, the newspaper reported.

"I certainly do not condone drink-driving," Mr Newton said in the statement.

"The lesson I have learned is that drinking means no driving, even if it is several hours before.

"It is a lesson I will not forget."

The penalty for a first offence at the .058 level is a $300 fine and the loss of 10 demerit points.
