Ridiculous!! Scarlett was pivotal and absolutely integral to Geelong's premierships. Pavlich has yet to play in a premiership team.

Yeah I think if any team had the choice of hindsight and the ability to draft either player, Pavlich would be chosen everytime. Playing down back against where Pavlich plays is far easier. It's the reason Carey is known as the best yet Jakovich was rated only very good.

I think some people are seriously underestimating how good you need to be, to be top ten of all time.
Maybe.
Same time though, Mitchell is only sl < GAJ, and ahead of ALL other MF contenders. ALL. And after all, this game is ALL about mids, is it not?

The issue also is that top 10 is arbitrarily a useless restriction considering the completely different eras and closeness in ability.

I mean, who exactly are the 100% absolute locks that cant be argued with? Leigh Matthews, Gablett snr and Plugger might be the only I can think of that no one is going to disagree with at all. Others might be "just as good" but will cop some debate.
And Carey.

If we're talking top ten players of all time then I wouldn't rate Ablett that high myself.
Absolute gun but when I think about the top ten he's not there for me.
Fyfe is so good that he could make it. Buddy was on track until he had a few ordinary seasons at the Hawks.
Buddy could, Fyfe could, Ablett as good as he is doesn't have the brute force leadership to influence games like Fyfe and Buddy.
How many AA's and MVP awards does the best ever player have, and who currently leads those?
Yep, GAJ.
If opinions galore don't sway you, maybe stats like those are worth considering.

Pick a top ten from the list below:

Barassi, Whitten, Bunton x 2, Coleman, Lockett, Dyer, Farmer, Reynolds, Skilton, Stewart, Coventry, Matthews, Carey, Ablett x2, Bartlett, Hutchinson, Cable, Murray, Pratt, Robran, Ebert, Baldock, Hudson, Nicholls
Most posters here wouldn't have seen even ten of these players.

Some of them I've never even heard of.

Of current players, only Ablett Jnr and Franklin are even in the ballpark.

And here lies the problem: back line players are not rated.

You ask any professional which is harder, back or forward, and they will say back. But people don't rate the backs because what they do is less obvious to the average footy fan. Goals, not spoils, sell newspapers and make highlight reels, but are as impressive as each other in a pure football sense.

Jakovich isn't rated higher because backs aren't as 'entertaining' to the average footy follower as a mid or a key forward is. But a real football brain knows a good player when they see one, and most backmen are criminally underrated by both the fans and the media.

I disagree you have one real gun forward and so do we, if Hawkins or tex go down, most of your supporters will waive good bye to the season as I would if tex went down! They are like bloody hens teeth

Cats lose Ablett Jr then win a flag.

Hawks lose Franklin then win a flag.

Cats lose Scarlett and the backline begins a rebuild and the club drops down the ladder...

Hawks still had roughead,

If buddy was available at 25 or Scarlett at 25 who would you take?

Buddy is a fine player and so was Scarlett....

What I would say is if you look at lists of who people consider "great" they are predominantly either midfielders or forwards.

Great defenders are a rarer breed.

Cats lose an EF in 2012, Scarlett retires, Cats then miss out on a GF appearance by under a kick after finishing second on the ladder.

But given the choice in a draft you would take the gun forward first followed by the midfielder and lastly the back. We have had some great backs infact AA but give me a gun forward anyday of the week we have had two in twenty years Modra and Tex!

I think Franklin would have to be the best candidate of any player to have established some sort of career and is still playing. As a key forward he's stood above his peers in his position I'm not sure many have historically. I'll preface all of this by saying I have seen **** all pre 00s football so ignore the rest if you want. But guys like Carey, Ablett, Dunstall, Lockett all played around the same time and all excelled and all feature in discussions like this.

All 4 of them were better than Franklin. There's no room in the top 10 for Buddy. The top 10 is a ridiculously exclusive club - you have to be damn near a miracle worker to get into that group.

Scarlett played alongside Ablett, Enright, Johnson, Bartel and other top liners. In Pavlich's prime he had the likes of Bell, Grover, Carr and Black. No where near the same league.
