Na seriously: Fyfe, Ablett and Hogan. The first two would need 3 Brownlows, Hogan just needs to dominate like Carey.

From this era, D Swan is equal standing with Gary Ablett jnr, the stats and the influence on games are identical. Furthermore in the scheme of things GAJ wouldn't make a top 20 list of GOAT players, apart from the immortal such as Whitten Barrassi, Matthews and co, you got guys like Lockett Ablett snr, Dunstall, Bartlet, Daicos, C Grant, Carey Breton, Flower, Matera, Hawkins, Jarman, that's just a snapshot of the 80's 90's. So many great players would lay claims of being ahead of GAJ.

Things only a Collingwood supporter would say.
Point being, if your 15 years old and squeezing pimples off your nose, its no surprise that GAJ is the best thing since sliced bread was invented. GAJ is just the best player in a very average period in the history of the game. LOL at your avatar, that's the way to win premiership's.

"Seriously".....Hogan? In the best ever category after how many games????

Honestly i can't think of anyone currently playing that deserves to be in the top 10 of all time discussion. Ablett gets in for mine. The other older blokes haven't done enough (including Franklin who would be nowhere near top 10 on my all time list). Fyfe could get there but realistically he's only had 1 super elite season and then a couple of regular elite seasons (aa calibre but not top 10 all time calibre).

Fyfe has the highest Brownlow votes per game of any player. It's juts one metric but if he keeps that up for 250 games and retires as a triple Brownlow winner etc. he'll be in the discussion even if probably still falling short.

Top 10 of all time is a ridiculous category to be trying to break into. Ignoring the few years in the 1890s we're into the 12th decade of VFL/AFL footy. If you picked a player of the decade for each a few would still miss out Pretty elite company.

Hayden Bunton Snr won 3 Brownlows and 3 Sandover Medals...the only player to ever do so...legend in the AFL Hall of fame and selected in AFL Team of the Century...and believed by some historians as the greatest player to ever pull on a boot...also a statue of him outside the MCG....

...but never even mentioned when these types of threads come up.

Such is life.

There's 100+ years of footballers that don't get mentioned in these threads. It's not a reasoned discussion, it's just 'my childhood hero was better'. Also, footy peaked in general during any given poster's youth

Fyfe has an MVP at 22 and 23 years of age. Every season, he gets a lot better somehow, even when you think he can't. If he continues his upward trajectory he could be in the mix. He already easily has the most Brownlow votes per game of all current players.

I think some people are seriously underestimating how good you need to be, to be top ten of all time.
strongly agree with you bulldog1954, i would have no idea of top 10 all time, from the players i have seen in my life time i would say ones who could possibly be top 10 all time are.
wayne carey, gary ablett snr, leith matthews, jason dunstall, tony lockett, that is half the top 10 already off the top of my head. i would leave the top 10 of all time list to someone who has researched the subject a little more than me:) but a fun thread. always leads to some interesting banter.

Anyone playing today likely to be a top 10 of all time?

Most punters would include names like Matthews, Carey, Dunstall, GAblett x 2, Scarlett, Enright, Roo x 2, Harvey x 2, Judd, Goodes, Diesel, Hird, SOS, Voss...

Fyfe is a good chance, maybe Buddy for mine...

Anyone else?
Since when are Scarlett, Enright, Roo, Harvey, Judd, hird, voss, Goodes, SOS, in the top 10?

Top 10 is something like:

Lockett, Carey, hart, ablett, ablett, farmer, barassi, whitten, bunton, Matthews. Others up for contention are Coleman, G.Williams, Pratt, Hudson, Stewart and Skilton.

I assume this means of the history of football. Looking now and recent years.

Ablett is the only one currently playing who would get a clear invite.

Dean Cox would have to be considered. He took rucking to a whole new level. Borderline choice.

Fyfe has a long, long, long, long way to go until he is considered.

Buddy could if he had another couple of 2008 type impact seasons.

Judd at the start of his career would have been seen as a shoe in. Not sure anymore. Similar to Buddy shone in his early years and gone slowly down downhill.

People saying Scarlett. Best KPD over the last 20 years. However look beyond that and Mews, Langford and Silvagni (spelling?) would all have him covered.
No defender qualifies for top 10 of all time. Lol at the Mews inclusion.
