Goodes was not that good between 2003-10. Incredibly overrated along with Simon Black. Can anyone actually think of games that Goodes played that were worthy of being spoken about as a top 20 player?

Scarlett doesn't belong in this conversion either. He does belong in the conversation of best full backs/defenders of all time but not in the best player conversation.

Goodes praise comes from the fact he was so difficult to match up on- played almost every position on the ground at some stage (at an exceptionally high level) and won two brownlows.

Goodes highlights? From memory he kicked 8 goals one game to drag as against the line against Freo, his second half in the 2006 grand final, 2014 grand final etc

He played better in big games/finals and was consistently amongst the best in the competition. He didn't kick 12 goals a game or 40+ touches but he was exceptionally good.

Can't believe the engine room of the 3- peaters not mentioned.
Mitchell is a freak of a player.
Unstoppable, untaggable, super effective.
But top ten of all time?

In the same category as Ablett Sr, Bunton Jr, Ablett Jr, Carey, Mathews, Lockett, Baldock, Hudson etc? Hardly.
Even top ten of the AFL era would be a massive stretch, imo. The same goes for a lot of players on the OP's list.

Anyone playing today likely to be a top 10 of all time?

Most punters would include names like Matthews, Carey, Dunstall, GAblett x 2, Scarlett, Enright, Roo x 2, Harvey x 2, Judd, Goodes, Diesel, Hird, SOS, Voss...

Fyfe is a good chance, maybe Buddy for mine...

Anyone else?

The only players from that list that I would even include in a discussion of the top 10 of all time are Matthews, Carey and G Ablett x2.

The original 13 Legends were chosen for a reason to be legends. They should be the starting point with arguments required to displace them.

Pick a top ten from the list below:

Barassi, Whitten, Bunton x 2, Coleman, Lockett, Dyer, Farmer, Reynolds, Skilton, Stewart, Coventry, Matthews, Carey, Ablett x2, Bartlett, Hutchinson, Cable, Murray, Pratt, Robran, Ebert, Baldock, Hudson, Nicholls

Of current players, only Ablett Jnr and Franklin are even in the ballpark.

Scarlett wouldn't even in be in the top 5 full backs of all time.

No way this guy was a beast, would smash his opponent then rack up 20 touches running off his man. I never seen a full back as attacking as him. Journos rank him along side Silvagni as one of the greatest fullbacks ever to play. For me 2nd after Ablett Snr to play for the Cats. Sorry bud but you have no idea about football.

Ablett Jnr>Scarlett

Prefaced with I haven't seen some of these play, just made an order a while ago from what I read etc.
So my top 10 of all time currently stands
1. Wayne Carey
2. Leigh Matthews
3. Gary Ablett Snr
4. Haydn Bunton
5. Gary Ablett Jnr
6. Jason Dunstall
7. Tony Lockett
8. Barry Cable
9. Polly Farmer
10. Ian Stewart

So (other than Ablett) my next in lines down the list of current/recently retired (last 3-5 years) players. Probably forgetting a few but close enough

1. Matthew Scarlett
2. Chris Judd
3. Lance Franklin
4. Sam Mitchell
5. Adam Goodes
6. Ben Cousins
7. Nick Riewoldt
8. Luke Hodge
9. Corey Enright
10. Dean Cox

Of this, I'd say the top 4 would be in discussions for top 25 ever, with Franklin & Mitchell needing to finish off their careers very well to push into all time top 10 status.

Nat Fyfe, Chad Wingard & Marcus Bontempelli are my predictions for those at the top of the next generation that will push hard for top 10 status. Class players who have that extra something that in my eyes may change the way clubs play, draft, train etc. Wingard with a full season in the midfield would be lethal skill-wise, we've seen the strength and physicality of Fyfe which already has clubs changing the ways they develop their young mids, Bontempelli is sort of a prototype between the two I reckon. Those types of things are what makes the difference between 'great' and 'all time great' players. The next 5-10 years will show whether it rings true.

I'd go Ablett snr, then Polly Farmer, then Scarlett - Ablett jnr right up there for the club, probably next cab off the rank - but we've had some good midfielders over the years. Apart from the great Reg Hickey, no one comes close to touching Scarlett as a key defender for the Cats. And Scarlett's gotta be ahead of Hickey (Jocka Todd has a very good record for that matter too).

Nope. franklin had dodgy hands/shoulders then and couldn't take overhead marks. 2008 and 2013 by far his best years. I do remember Lonergan taking franklin to the cleaners on a number of occasions in 2011 though.
well 2008 and 2013 he played closest to goal so I can understand why the distant observers may see that.

carry on.

Stringer or Bont have the skill and physical attributes. Whole lotta hard work, luck, more hard work, more luck and they could both definitely be in the mix at the end of their respective careers.

Bont only turned 20 a month ago and is already a genuine star. Stringer 21 AA coming back from crippling injury.

Did you seriously just put Scarlett ahead of all those blokes?
You know, I get the feeling sometimes that posters like you think Geelong fluked three premierships, because other than GAJ (who only played in 2 of the recent 3) the other team members were average ordinary players according to you.
As another poster (who is not a Geelong supporter) put it, Scarlett changed the way KPD's play. He is probably the only key backman I know who was ever tagged by an opposition player to quell his attacking game. Matthew Lloyd ranks him as the toughest full back he played on. And 6 AA selections, including selection in 2003 when the Cats were an average team did not come by chance.

I think Malarkey ( when a full back had to beat his opponent one out ) would give him a good run for his money - and a far better kick to

By the way- did you see Scarletts 1st 30 odd games ( they were shocking) - there was talk about him being delisted at the time

You contrast that to Dustin Fletcher ( when still a schoolboy in his 1st season ) played on Ablett down at Geelong in 93 and comprehensively beat him - so much so that Ablett during the game was moved to a HFF to get him away fom Fletchers telescopic arms

Scarlett ended up a very very good key defender for Geelong - but no way known is he a great

Judd? Lol. Learn to kick ffs. He had 15 years to learn the art of kicking to advantage of a teammate..and they are all still waiting for a lace out by the cardboard/ chicken wing / seagal movie King!

I don't think it's anything against any player but if your club in hindsight had the option of drafting Scarlett or say M Voss or M Pavlich to get them to a flag who would you choose.

PS he didn't even put those two players in the next 10 but he did Corey Enright which makes it even more laughable

No Buckley.

Criminally underrated.

Still won a brownlow at Carlton, and have a look at his finals against Sydney and Richmond and come back to me.
He was a different player at Carlton, but hardly a shadow of the West Coast days.

Really to be in the running for top 10 of all time, hed need to be the best ar carlton or west coast for a start.

Is he?

Ridiculous!! Scarlett was pivotal and absolutely integral to Geelong's premierships. Pavlich has yet to play in a premiership team.

Hof fame criteria will be altered for goodes, maybe even hof legend.

And they wonder why the proles show their diappointment

You couldn't compare those two to Judd and Cousins even Kerr thinking about it, in 6 years time if they continue to progress, maybe, but Cousins and Judd were freaks

Current hawks team is a team first. Would swap all the individual gongs for that elusive four peat
