And could play forward as well.

I rate SOS higher though because he played on some of the best forwards in the sports history and was the best at waning their influence.

Playing against better players doesn't make you better. It is true Silvagni played against better players (although he didn't become a great full back until Ablett and Lockett and Dunstall were near the end of their careers) but that doesn't mean he was better. Scarlet didn't play against those players but he did not just beat his opponents, he massacred them. Was destroying players like Richardson, Tredrea, Neitz, Hall, Gehrig on a consistent basis to the point where they regularly got ironic cheers when they finally managed a possession or two late in the game such was the level they were beaten. Not to mention that Scarlet has a fantastic attacking side to his game which Silvagni did not when he was playing full back. Scarlett could also not constantly wrestle and grapple like Silvagni used to do. What Silvagni used to do to full forwards off the ball and in marking contests was embarrasing and made a mockery of the game. Take that away from Silvagni and he wouldn't have been much. I rated Langford a better full back then Silvagni. McIntosh was also up there competing for the best full backs of the late 80's/90's era.

Nonetheless I wouldn't be discussing any of these players in the top 10 players of all time.

Adam Goodes had a grand total of eight 30 possession games in his career and not one over 34. Want to revise your statement? I remember a game where Goodes got 14 possessions on Ling in the midfield and not one goal. Geelong thumped Sydney. Sydney coach came out at the press conference and said Adam Goodes form was quite worrying and he needed to improve. Adam Goodes got 2 Brownlow votes that day. There were many odd examples with Goodes like that when it came to Brownlow votes with quite a few in the two years he won them.
 
Incorrect Seeds. Your entitled to your opinion, but claiming it as fact in a persuasive way comes off as desperate. Not many people rate scarlet - and thats fine no need to have a meltdown about it because people think other players were far better than scarlet - and rightly so.

Best full back ever?

I can think of 3 from the last 30 years. Go back another 20 years for 2 more.

Then we are in the murky past but I assume there would be some more.

How about top 10 full backs. I assume plenty could agree to that.

Top 10 of all time >> Mitchell >>>>> Scarlett

Of course Scarlett is going to be higher ranked in his position than Mitchell would be in his. Just look at how many midfielders are drafted each year compared to key defenders. The best key defender of all time still might not make the top 10 of all time. And Scarlett is not that either.

Scarlett and Silvagni both had a lot of pace and agility that could hurt oppositions coming off the contest and out of the backline. That's one big similarity between them when you compare them to your average full back. They not only did they shut down and monster forwards better but they had the physical attributes and skills in spades which made them damaging far beyond your Lonergan or Lake type player we see today.

Or you could say Alastair Lynch was a fantastic full back in the worst team in the league but because he was so good he ended up playing full forward. Imagine if he had played full back his whole career at a team like the hawks, would he have been the best ever.

Not sure Lake should be bracketed with Lonergan.

Not saying he was better, because he wasn't as consistent but I would argue Lakes outmarking of opponents was at least as damaging as the run Scarlett provided.
 
I would have Ablett jr in the top 5. He is the best midfielder to ever lace a boot. We will never see a more rounded midfielder, and a midfielder of such quality. Ablett jr is criminally underrated. To mention anyone else playing today in the same breath as Ablett jr - is ridiculous IMO.

Ok, revised, Adam Goodes was an over rated hack?...:rolleyes: Perhaps he should hand back those Brownlows he didn't deserve and apologise to Max Rooke for causing him so much distress? It's all subjective isn't it? Some people say Carey is the best ever and KB will tell you he wasn't as good as Royce Hart! IMO only Gary Ablett jr is a top 10 ATG since 2000....then you will have others screaming out loud "what about Judd"?

No reason to think he's any better than Skilton or Bunton, Stewart is in the conversation, etc. To say Ablett Jr as the clear best midfielder ever is just as ridiculous.

Your hyperbole about the "many" examples is close too the hyperbole of the 30+ disposal games.

Yep. Franklin could overtake him if he finishes his career well. Judd and Scarlett are neck and neck but I went with Scarlett as the KPP. He's a top 5, maybe 3 all time full back, who attacked as well he defended. Judds a top 10 midfielder. Franklin is still behind or just ahead of Carey, Ablett Snr, Lockett, Dunstall, Hart, Hudson, Coleman, Blight, Coventry, Baldock for me as key forwards, so around top 10, and Mitchell isn't a top 10 mid, so that's what put Scarlett over them (relative to position, as it is hard to conpare otherwise)
 
Fyfe will give it a nudge. Will win a minimum of 3 brownlows (if he can escape report), hes nearly the perfect player (only let down is skills). I think franklin will be remembered as an all time great but top 10 will be hard to crack. We already have guys like dunstall,lockett, carey, ablett in the the top 10 all time, hard to see any more forwards cracking the list

I wouldn't be so certain. Ablett should've won about 5. Mitchell has been good for a couple in his time too. Only takes 1 player to have a better year, and even then they don't necessarily have to have a better year as you're mostly competing with your teammates for votes. Though admittedly he is well placed as the stand out in his team as long as Fremantle can win enough games to justify giving him the full 3.
