He carried them single handedly through the last finals with half the team out injured.

How many did Jordan win without Pippen? Or Jackson for that matter.

Nobody has ever won a championship by themselves though.

Lebron made finals, so did Iverson (probably others I can't think of too) but nobody has ever won basically on their own.

Sorry for bringing this sort of back to football :)

I think the ability to single handedly do something in basketball is FAR easier than in football. As I said in an earlier post 1 vs 5 is better than 1 vs 18.

Rates Jordan as being in 3 of the 6 best teams to make the finals, Lebron 3 of the worst 8.

Agreed.

Very few times can a single player be a monumental difference by himself, their performance needs to cause a flow on effect for the rest of the team.
Even then, if the players surrounding them aren't good enough (Ablett is a good example) it still isn't going to get them to finals.

People will argue only because he is still playing in 10-20 years time you may see people saying he was the greatest of all time. Carey is getting that way as we all saw him play games which have literally detroyed teams, GAJ has done the same, we have all forgotten about the average games of Carey the 1998 GF was one thank god. In years to come a number of people will put GAJ in front of both Carey and Matthews. Its hard to argue for a current player especially because GAJ is coming to the later part of his career. I remember Carey at Adelaide, he wasnt that good, but I would still rate him the best footballer I have ever seen.

In 10 or 20 years we may well be saying Fyfe is. Or some kid we havent heard of. And people will be continuing to ignore all those players who were before their time :)

I rate Matthews, Carey, GAS as the 3 best I have seen. I think Lockett comes 4th would have been the greatest with 2,000 goals had he been at Hawthorn instead of St Kilda. I think Dunstall is not a huge amount behind because despite him playing in a better team than Lockett, he was a true team player and assisted a huge number of goals for a Full Forward.

And so on with many, many other players who have been incredible, but still not as incredible as those who came before them.

It happens with everyone.

As time passes, the bad games get smoothed over, the good games become legendary.
Nostalgia goggles are incredibly powerful.

I remember Carey, but was too young to really appreciate his level of play, so I leave him out of my thinking. As a result, I consider Ablett jnr the best player I've seen.
The reason I'll remember Ablett so fondly in 20-30 years time, is not only is his best absolutely dominant, he produced his best with an almost unparalleled level of consistency.

I would go with most of yours

1. Carey
2. Matthews
3. Garry Ablett
4. Lockett
5 GAJ

But then some older players that I have seen footage of and listened to people talk about' we had a player called Barrie Robran who was an absolute champion who was rated above Blight by any South Australian and Im sure the Western Australians have one particular footballer they feel the same about.

Doesnt leave too many spots left

I'd go:

01. Matthews
02. Carey
03. Lockett
04. GABlett Junior
05. Dunstall

Farmer, Alan Jakovich and Brett Burton then for you?

Over Dunstall with the chest mark lead then kick a goal! Anyday of the week. But they aren't like watching GA, GAJ,Carey,Matthews, Lockett. So there's my top 5 Dunstall is nowhere near top 10 as I would rather the local ammo's bit more exciting to watch, but like I said if I was into stats he would make top 10.

Dangerfield is well on track to becoming a top 10 player of all time, he just gets better and better with every game that he plays.
He's pretty good. No Shaun Burgoyne though.

Burgoyne is an interesting one - a superstar at 2 clubs - silky skills - still got his pace - and is clever - maybe not top 10 of all time - of all those current star Hawthorn players - him and Mitchell are the 2 most important by a mile

It will be interesting if and when Hawthorn pick/update next their greatest ever team - then i think Burgoyne should be in it - hes better than Buckenara in my opinion
Mitchell, Hodge and Cyril will make that side, Burgoyne is a 50/50 chance I'd say.

Buddy is a chance if he can win a few more colemans and finishes his career with over 1000 goals, will be such a great accomplishment as it won't happen again for a very long time.

Is Dangerfield there now? Surely not. But if he, hypothetically, continues his current barnstorming form to an emphatic Brownlow win, and follows up with more of the same next year, he might be coming into contention.

I suppose one question here is: Are we supposed to be rating people for performance over their whole career, or at their peak?

Some serious bias here. Hes going to have to do alot to make top 10 of all time. Not even close atm
Fyfes racked up more Brownlow votes while playing about 60 less games.

Ablett Snr never won a Brownlow and he is the undisputed greatest player of all time.

Even if he has a couple of blinding seasons, he still wouldn't be ahead of Polly Farmer, Gaz Sr or Gaz Jr as the best player at his club. Do we really think there aren't seven players across 17 teams over 120 years that are better than Dangerfield? It's an utterly absurd claim.

Well that's sort of what I was getting at in the post previous. Surely McCleod and Ricciuto rate above PD at Adelaide. So that's five players at his two clubs superior to him.
