I have heard that the club only found out about the fixture by looking it up online, wasn't even sent to them by the AFL apparently.

and they are still in the darkness about a lot of other logistical things as well.

Sounds like a sure fire winner.

Just keep pumping AFLW. At least there is real interest in that. Anyway, I guess I'll havea look. Starting to get footy starved. Although the 2017 finals somehoworother keep appearing on my screen.

I really hope it doesn’t end up like cricket now where nobody really gives a **** because there is just far too much of it.

Experimentation of this sort makes perfect sense.
The size and shape of ground (pitch), and the smaller number of players (less than half), clearly give it advantages with kids (especially in non-traditional states) and with the potential overseas market.
And who knows, maybe a compressed form of the game may even prove a new exciting draw card for us rusted on followers.
(I was pretty cynical about T20, but I can see now why it has caught on so quickly. Go the 'Canes.)
I'm not sure about the compatibility of our scoring system though.
Gaelic football is played on the same sized ground (or so I believe) and quite rightly relies on a cross-bar to limit goals (and thereby build excitement).
A glut of long range pinging for goals (worth 10 pts) is the opposite plan.
Given the shorter dimensions of the ground, I wouldn't be surprised if that gets a bit boring after a while.
But hey, who knows?
Anything that helps Aussie Rules conquer the world is okay by me.

Good post with some interesting points about the topic. Whilst I'm a traditionalist when it comes to sport, I'm curious to see how the format goes (many clubs have been using a similar set up during preseason to work on quick, effective ball movement over the last few preseason I believe) and as a toe in the water concept it will be interesting to see if it a) takes off and/or b) brings new people in new markets to the game.

It begs the question, what other major sports are testing abbreviated versions of their game ? Tennis for one and basketball is another. Big bash is a good example and it remains to be seen whether that's a good thing for the game of cricket over the long term. ODI's didn't destroy Test cricket but it could be argued they didn't help it either.

The shortening and rationalising of some sports is I guess in keeping with our burgeoning need for instant gratification and results over the staid pleasures of the original pastimes. Things do have to evolve (yes they originally used woven apple baskets in basketball !) so I'm open to trying new things outside of the season. I'd like the rules left alone however (how long before last touch over the boundary comes back in ?) because constant tinkering just creates confusion from one season to another - can anybody tell me what the definition of holding the ball is these days ??

I hope we don't expose too many of our senior players to AFLX (why Geel would even flirt with Danger playing in this is beyond me) whilst we're in our window but utilise it as a way for fringe and future stars to build form, confidence and place pressure on those above them.

It looks a game made for the likes of Jiggins, Ty Stengle, Shai, cellis, Menwerenotdueanymore, Shorty, Moore, The Big Chol, Lloydy, Miles and the other fringe dwellers looking to put their names up.

Lloyd and Miles are interesting ones actually.

Both appaer to have limitations based on our AFL game plan(simply due to non selection) but the change in format may benefit

Miles especially, his speed and spread has supposedly been his problem, and with this meant to be a faster game, people might think it will not suit him...
But I just wonder, with less ground and space to cover in the smaller format, it might not highlight his issues.

The bolded part above goes to the heart of the issue as far as I'm concerned.
In other words, would AFLX taking off like T20 eventually relegate AFL to a historical relic?
Ultimately, there's not much that the purists can do about it though.
The customer gets what the customer wants, and if the short form suits the times then that's what will probably rule.
One thing that gives this curmudgeon hope is that the AFL game has always been a much more time and excitement compressed spectacle than Test and even ODI cricket.
It may be the case that AFLX and AFL could happily co-exist.
Stay tuned I guess.

Yes it's interesting to see what both Miles and Lloyd offer this year. I threw them in there amongst the rookies because Lloyd had several standout games at VFL level on the ball last year (a 50 pos game in one) so is clearly fit and trying to add strings to his bow. I can also see him shooting at goal from outside 40 for those 10 pointers.

Apparently Milesy is covering the ground much better having been encouraged to work on that weakness over the preseason. A fringe player like Townsend got his opportunity late last year and certainly used it. Will Miles and Lloyd take theirs if it comes ? Speed and defensive/tackling pressure is king now (finally !) The difference is, there was a clear role for Towner defensively marking the likes of an intercepting Le(a)ver.

Our depth on the back of such a strong VFL squad has gone from being a weakness to a strength. How far this club has come in a little over a year ! There's some hungry boys in the twos and that's so good for us going forward.

The long range aspect is interesting. Since it is only from 40, do you try to force a contest and the spillage, where it becomes infinitely harder to kick 40m off a step or would you shift it in and out of the 40 arc until someone finds enough space to smash it from 40+?

The countering aspect is also important though, over committing to flood will leave huge gaps but the heightened pace may force more spray and pray kicks so defenders might play off the man.

I'm excited for AFLX - especially the women's iteration of it, as I think it will artificially increase scoring and is more suited for women (less pure physicality and meterage gain, more about skills in contested ball and accurate kicking)

Based in Syd, so going with a number of mates and their kids. Actually looking forward to it. Always like seeing the next gen coming through, not just our boys, but across most teams.

Good opportunity for the runners of each club to get out there and do their thing.
I imagine it’s going to be full on, end to end stuff.

They have the local comp here playing it, they trialed the game here a while ago. The local teams play a round Robbin next week, to win a spot of playing the opening game before the AFL boys run out.

Then we have 2 JLT community games. I don’t mind this preseason setup. Throw in an intraclub and that’s plenty.

Unlikely to see any premiership players, but I would have no problem with the below squad.

Markov, Broad
Short, Ellis, Menedue
Butler, George

Bolton, Stengel, Higgins, Baker, e-Smith, Moore.

For those with any interest you guys sent a squad our way today .....
Final score was 113 v 72 Hawks way .

Both squads very lite on ....like what I saw of Bolton and Broad solid playing as a tall in this hybrid game .
You were far better structured than us in the first half and lead at the change .
We switched to a little man on man for a while and that few a few things out .
Menadue gets over the ground well in this formate I must say but his finishing let him down at times .
All in all just a hit and giggle .....no injurys

Glad you noticed Menadue as most supporters wouldnt have even heard of him or know him from a bar of soap
Kid came to the club 188cm 67kgs (dripping wet) and has been building his body last 18 months and is probably still another 18 months away from being ready to play 22 senior games.

His kicking is usually good but must have had a bad day today and hope its out of his system , He is seen by tiger supporters as being a similar 'Type' to your own Isaac Smith - Hope he gets to the level as smith has as he should be ready about the time Houli & Grigg will be calling it a day.
