Geelong game. Looked like he was asked to lead him out to the wings. Which took Scarlett out of it completely, which then opened up the forward line & gave Gumby (& Neagle) a chance one-out.
The two younger blokes failed with their chances, but IMHO Willo did a specific job.

Fair enough. Although I think even you or I could have succeeded in doing that job if Scarlett were instructed to defend us instead :D

For 2 minutes maybe.
Difference being, last time Scarlett paid no attention to Willo he got on the end of 3 or 4 in a grand final.
Taking a dangerous defender out of the game can be invaluable, which was part of the thinking of getting Willo in the first place.

In some games I want Fletcher to play FB and move Pears to third tall/rebounding defender.

Now everyone should be including mundy, jones, tambling and taking out jetta, davey, winderlich, Stanton etc.....

My earlier post about it is stupid to post a best 22 when our squad hasn't been finalized, and we haven't got a coach!

Exactly why I have not posted my 'best 22' team as yet ;)

2nd try:

McVeigh Pears Hocking
Dempsey Hooker Fletch
Winders Howlett Jetta
Hurley Gumby Zaka
Monfries Carlisle Colyer

Hille Watson Melksham

int: Hardingham Reimers Prismall Ryder

emerg: Crameri Marigliani Myers

left out a few like Davey, Stanton, Neagle who may get traded, plus guys like Welsh/Dyson/H.Slat who struggled in 2010. Williams, NLM, Lonergan unlucky. IM sure this will change again once trades, drafts etc done and list finalised

There is no way we should get rid of stanton,he is only young a is still finding his spot on the footy field!!!!!there are alot of others that should go before him....

surely prismall is good enough to be a starter next year??? even if he isn't in the middle as much and plays a half forward role? surely he would be better value than someone like lonergan or reimers?

Also have to aggree with this, stanton had a bad year he a couple of years ago he used to find alot more of the ball and he can probably get back to that aswell. Anyone have any ideas as to why he has been playing so bad?

B. Mcviegh Hurley Hocking
HB Hooker Pears Dempsey
C Melksham Watson Prismall
HF Zaka Gumby Colyer
F Monfries Hardingham Williams

FOLL Hille Winders Stanton

Ryder Howlett Welsh Jetta

lets face it, the list isnt great and neither is the team i have picked. Even though Fletcher is probably the best and most consistent player on the list, i dont really think we should have him in the team when we should focus on kids, thats the only reason i have left him out. Also left Neagle out because he hasnt shown any real improvement for a while IMO and in his few games this year hardingham looked alot more promising

With hirdy likely to be coach im thinking the following will occur.

Welsh and McVeigh will play. At least for the start of the season. Probably both midfield.
Hurley will play forward, hirdy loves him up forward.

B: Slattery - Pears - Fletcher
HB: McVeigh - Hooker - Hocking
C: Stanton - Watson - Melksham
HF: Zaka - Hurley - Monfries
F: Williams - Gumby - Silverlock

R: Ryder - Myers - Winderlich

INT: Jetta - Hille - Howlett - Reimers

2011 Starting 21 + Sub

Most other clubs on BF have already looked towards their best team for the 2011 season. Im surprised a thread like this hasn't been made. Maybe its because the draft hasn't happened, but trade week has. I would like to know what Essendon fans think our round 1 side will look like against the doggies. Name the best 21 and where you would like to see players positioned. Include our likely pick 8 (be realistic) and name them if you think they will be in our best 21/22 come round 1. Pick 8 main candidates seem to be (Gorringe, Prestia, Caddy and Atley). Im happy for anyone else to be picked here except (Swallow, Gaff, Bennell and Day). Also include pick 30 if you think they can make our best 21 and what position they should play.

Here's how i would like to see us lineup next year come round 1 if fit:

Mcveigh - Pears - Fletcher

Winderlich - Hooker - Dempsey

Stanton - Watson - Atley

Monfries - Gumbleton - Jetta

Davey - Hurley - Hille

Ryder - Zaharakis - Melksham

Colyer, Howlett, Hocking (Prismall)

A few changes from last year. Would like to see Winderlich used as that running half back flanker full time, also could help Dempsey a little aswell. Our onball brigade is new with Zaharakis needed to play there to develop to his best. Melksham thrown in the deep end, but as our tagger - would like to see him play on the best similar to Bastinacs role last year. Would help his development. Hurley to play full forward, i dont want to see Neagle. I know Hurleys future is probably down back, but i think it would be best if we gave him a go as a permanent full forward next year (power forward). This kids a gem and we already know his capabilities down back. If we left him 30m out from goal for the season there is no doubt he would feature in the top 10 for the coleman. Also Mcveigh as our small defender and Fletcher to play on the more dangerous forward from the opposition (Lecras, Porplyzia types). Mcveigh is a decent user by foot and usually can get jobs done when given the role.

Unlucky to miss are Prismall, Myers, Reimers. But i think Reimers needs to be shown that he has to play good footy in the 2nds and let him know where he stands. Strongly considered leaving Davey out and using Colyer as our small forward, but i think pace, crumbing and tackling pressure will be even be more important with Hille and Hurley down forward. Would be happy to leave Davey out and play Colyer as a small forward and allow Reimers, Myers or Prismall into the best 21.

I see quite alot of improvment, i may have missed some important players aswell.

Thought and show us how you would like to see the side lineup next year round 1.

Re: 2011 Starting 21 + Sub

I'm sure there was a thread on this already... but anyway here goes.

B: Slattery Pears Welsh
HB: McVeigh Hurley Fletcher
C: Winderlich Watson Dempsey
HF Monfries Gumby Stanton
F: Davey Hille Jetta
R: Ryder Hocking Myers

Howlett Colyer Melksham (NLM)

After doing this I did notice that players like Atkinson, Dyson and Lonergan are hard to find spots for. (Not missing Houli either)

Unlucky: Reimers, Prismall, Hardingham Hooker, Zaka, Williams

I've gone for an older experienced backline. Welsh, McVeigh and Slattery are not going to improve our midfield, so better to have younger better guys in there.

Dempsey and Winderlich provide pace on the wings.

Hille to play FF when not in the ruck. Change with Ryder. Neither gets to rest on the bench due to 1 less position.

I found it hard to squeeze some players in. (I can't believe I don't have Zaka and Hooker in) For the future midfield players like Melksham, Colyer, Jetta, Myers are gifted some games.

Re: 2011 Starting 21 + Sub

Mine is more of a left field selection - looking ahead to 2013.

FB; Hardingham, Pears, Fletcher
HB; McVeigh, Hooker,Hocking
C; Zaharakis, Watson, Colyer
HF; D.Daniher, Gumbleton, Melksham
FF ; Davey, Hurley, Reimers
R; Hille, Winderlich, Stanton
IC; Ryder, Jetta, Howlett
Sub; NLM

My team includes seven talls. No H.Slattery, Welsh, Prismall, M.Williams or Monfries.

I imagine that if we start slowly that one of H.Slattery and Welsh, will come into the side to tag.

Want D.Daniher to play the Monfries role.

Hardingham to replace H.Slattery as the small lockdown defender - And to support McVeigh.

Hurley to play as a key forward.

Emphasis on getting games into the young midfielders and KP's.

Expect that Reimers,Melksham, Hocking and Colyer to rotate through the midfield.

Watson, Winderlich, Stanton, Howlett, Jetta, Zaharakis to be the core midfield.

Probably the best 22 I have seen thus far. Although I would try to find room for zaka, hooker and williams

I like the idea of having an experienced backline though.
For me I would go with that but with the following changes
Out: Colyer, Melksham
In: Hooker, Zaka

IMO Colyer and Melksham although very promising are still young, inexperienced and undersized. We are obviously not going to have the best 22 available so they would be the first emergencies to come in for me. Zaka and Hooker are just too important for our future to be leaving out.

In terms of defence I would play Slattery on the medium talls, Welsh on the quick small forwards and Mcveigh to provide run from defence along with fletcher. They are both very good kicks of the footy and would be the ones I would be using to start attacks from defence.
