Had a bit of a re-think and I'm going this way:

B: Slattery, Fletcher, Hooker
HB: McVeigh, Hurley, Pears

HF: Monfries, Gumbleton, Davey
F: Zaharakis, Carlisle, Williams
R: Hille, Watson, Jetta

that backline looks slow - 4 key size defenders with the slow slattery and ageing mcveigh. I believe only 3 of fletcher, pears, hurley and hooker should be in defence at any one time.

we don't want to be cut up by the likes of le cras and garlett again. need someone quick with defensive capabilities - clearly why hird drafted the way he did. for this reason i think heppell will play sooner rather than later whilst hardingham should also be tried there early on to see if it suits.

I'd like to see something along the lines of...

B: McVeigh Pears Fletcher
HB: Hocking Hooker Stanton
C: Winderlich Watson Colyer
HF: Monfries Hurley Gumbleton
F: Williams Hille Davey
R: Ryder Welsh Jetta
IC: Howlett Zaharakis Melksham Heppel(sub)

I'm not overly sure on Welsh's place in the team. I'm usually anti-Welsh but he can be very useful regardless of his skill level and as he's still vice captain and gives his all I'm sure Hird will want him around.

Am amazed to see anyone leaving Hocking out of our best 22.....has just had a breakout year that has seen him finish 2nd in the BnF and yet he wont be in our team come rd 1 2011. Get serious guys!

break out year might be exaggerating a tad. hocking played ok but it was more a reflection of essendons poor season that he finished that high IMO. hocking is an average player who is not suited in defence and will never be anything more than a battling midfielder. so where does that leave him position wise for the team? possibly a bench or sub player most likely in an ideal world.

Hocking is 23 soon with 50 games under his belt.

Why can't he improve?

I'd say he'll start to play his best footy soon. If he plays a little better than last year and cements a midfield spot then I see no reason for him to be out of the 22.

B - Fletcher - Hurley - Slattery

HB - Pears - Hooker - Dempsey

C - Zaharakis - Watson - Winderlich

HF - Monfries - Gumbleton - Reimers

F - Davey - Ryder - Daniher

R - Hille - Hocking - Stanton

Emerg. McVeigh, NLM, Williams

Reasons:

Daniher - I have a vibe about him.. that is all. :D
Colyer to sub. I reckon we go a small quick to change the game. We can throw Hurley forward and sub a Daniher or Gumbleton or another big man. ( though I have no idea about the sub rule atm)

I disagree, Hocking's effort and skill level improved quite a lot. For someone who is seen to be slow and have crap skills he seemed to be getting away from players chasing him and rarely missing a pass (I'll admit that's from memory, I haven't looked at stats). Along with that I found he was using his strength to his advantage a lot more which is something the team is lacking a fair bit.

I think people are forgetting just how damn good Hocking was in that middle stage of the year.

There was a period of about 4 or 5 weeks where my brother and I were saying he was (apart from Jobe) the most reliable guy in our side; everything he did resulted in something good.

Again, he only went downhill when he was forced to be a lockdown defender, which he is not.

Concur.
People look at his wombat build and pigeon hole him as a stodgy in-and-under. He's a linking running mid. Will play similar sorts of roles to Dean Solomon before he bulked up.

He's a good player, he's just not a defender.

thats my point Hocking is not a defender so can only be in the side as a midfielder.

in my view I have Watson, Myers, Howlett, Prismall, Stanton,Winderlich all ahead of him as midfielders and would prefer to see emerging talents Zaharakis, Melksham, Colyer, Heppell getting games ahead of him regularly as well as they have much higher potential.

Hocking I group with guys such as Welsh, Lonergan as being ok midfielders but having limited potential/ability. No doubt with attrition rate these guys will still get regular games as they are good for depth but for Essendon to go anywhere we need the more talented guys emerging.

My stab at our best 22:(with a slight look to our future also)

Backs: Pears Fletcher McVeigh
Half Backs: Hooker Hurley Myers
Centre: Winderlich Stanton Zaharakis
Half Forward: Monfries Gumby Williams
Forwards: Davey Hille Jetta
Following: Ryder Watson Howlett

Interchange: Heppell, Hocking, Melksham, Prismall, Dempsey, Carlisle (depends on who we play against)

My approach is attempted balance and mixture between speed and skill...(perceived)...but balance was the main approach...

Please let me know your thoughts/criticisms etc...thanks!

Agreed...no room for gap fillers...only for those with potential!!

I think 'Hocking vs Stanton' is a very, very good question to ask.
Both will probably start off half-back this year.

Cant see much improvement this year if Stanton starts the year at HF - unless a couple of the young midfielders jump out of the ground.
