Pendles off HB?

Nah, would rather Crispy there and Bruzzy on the other - both penetrating by foot and will likely improve next year. Langdon has IQ's spot (for now)

I'm guessing you have Pendles there to make a smooth transitional exit over the next two years? Because of his age? If so ok can't ignore that but we're looking at a player in his last two have been close to his best- and that's hard to judge given his consistent exceptional output.

My money is Pendles is looking at a 350 game career with minimal downturn in performance in the next 49 games.
He'd be like a magician back there concocting plays then slowing time down to execute them.

Pendles off HB is never going to work imo. Just because he’s a great player is not enough - as it’s taking his two deficiencies being lack of leg speed and overhead- and putting into a position where they can be exposed, and where in the modern game you need one or the other. He did it in the past in order to carry injuries but we have a dozen better defenders on the list.

It will be interesting whether we try and address the centre clearance debacle that was present throughout 2019 through personnel, and how, because our best and most dangerous mids are all link players.
It can’t be underestimated the difference it made when Cotchin introduced a more physical edge to his game. His raw numbers suffered but it gave Richmond a much better balance around the ball. I feel the same must happen with one of Pendle, Sidey, Treloar, Beams if it’s going to work with all 4 going through.
The alternative is DeGoey becomes a mainstay which I doubt, or Sier comes good. Wills has presence, but lacks class. Brown is clean but lacks size. Ditto Thomas.
Adams cannot carry the mantle alone and Grundy cannot be expected to be our best clearance player.
To me this is the key to unlocking 2020 success.

To me, this side gets it done on the presumption Noble Sier and Brown take the next step:

Crisp Rough Maynard
Howe Moore Langdon
Treloar Adams Phillips
Sidebottom Mihocek WHE
Stephenson Cox Elliott

Grundy Pendles DeGoey

Beams Noble Brown Sier

Great player is not enough, great playmaker is. Look at the handling.

Had some limited success playing as a defensive +1 when they were trying to protect his injuries but it's a different environment now with the 6-6-6 meaning he'd need to be accountable for an opponent. His lack of pace and poor contested marking would be just too easy to exploit. Not sure why people are so fixated on this when we have some very highly rated medium tall defenders who are all rightly ahead of him in the pecking order. And lets not forget that he was AA in 2019 playing as a midfielder.

Round 2 2016 the game we played against Richmond (the grundy last second goal game) Pendles played halfback on Richmond first gamer Jayden Short. Jayden Short out marked him. Jayden is short.

What I think the Club sees as current best 22.

then I’ve listed the rest of them as the next 22 plus the next few as extra on the bench;

I’ve placed Lynden Dunn as an emergency as he’s not on the list as it were. The Irish as well are on an extended bench if you will.

A little indulgence.
The above replied to, is what I see The Club (read coaches group) sees as their best 22 at this point of time.
The below is what I’d see as my better 22 and then the depth.

I’ve treated Dunn as being the rookie designated and extended the bench out for the left over players so to speak.

For what it’s worth, I’d love to see Wilson breakout and get into our 22 but obviously that kind of form is not yet displayed. Hopefully it will happen.

I have high hopes for the new blood and can see Rantall being a senior player sooner than later but again that’s yet to be observed.

All available I reckon that is exactly the 22 the selection committee would pick right now, be fascinating to see who breaks in and who goes out as the season progresses.

In an ideal world where Greenwood, Langdon and Howe return, fit and firing for finals, what's our go-to backline?

With a loose man back and somebody on the bench, 7 or 8 defenders (or defensive minded players) are picked every week

Our round 7 team was:

FB: Crisp, Roughead, Varcoe
HB: Maynard, Moore, Noble
IC: Quaynor
(plus Mayne named on the wing)

If fit, lots would automatically include Howe and Langdon and take out fringe players Varcoe, Noble and Quaynor, but then are we too tall? Can all 4 of Roughy, Moore, Howe and Langdon play together?

Obviously it can be match-up dependent, but in general, would this work?

FB: Crisp, Roughead, Howe
HB: Maynard, Moore, Langdon
Then 1 or 2 of Quaynor/Varcoe/Noble/Greenwood/Mayne

Does Shaz fit in anywhere?

Thoughts?

My pick would be:

FB: Maynard - Roughead - Langdon
HB: Howe - Moore - Crisp
IC: Quaynor

Really Quaynor isn't quite in our best 7 but I think he has shown enough for us to persist with his development if he maintains form.

good efforts saintly. But your backline is too too top heavy. I reckon one of Langdon or sharenberg would need to be replaced by a Varcoe or a quaynor.

Props for including beams, but let’s be realistic. I’m guessing at this point CBrown is our best replacement, though I’d prefer someone with more quality and less of a trier. Daicos it is then for me. I’d rather a Broomhead even, but that’s my fetish.

finally, Reid, when fit, is a much better choice than Cox. But he hasn’t been fit since I had a full head of hair. But if they can get him right by sacrificing a virgin at midnight (I’m thinking noble...) then we’d be a lot. Better.
