Ainsworth chol luko
Rankine King sexton
Witts miller Rowell
Fiorini weller hollands Anderson

Budarick/farrar pressing for a spot in the back 6
Sharp and hopefully atkins is fitter for wing back up
Corbett and Jeffery putting pressure on the fwds
Flanders probably stiff but pushing into the mid/fwd as soon as there's an injury.
Burgess our Mr fix it.
That's a good side, but there would be limited forward pressure.

Bored why not do an updated version with the current new recruits;

ROUND 1 side; predicting Witts will be back round 1.

B: W. Powell, S. Collins, S. Lemmens

HB: O. Markov, C. Ballard, J. Bowes

C: B. Ellis, B. Fiorini, J. Sharp

HF: L. Weller, J. Lukosius, B. Ainsworth

FF: I. Rankine, B. King, N. Holman

R: J. Witts, M. Rowell, T. Miller

I: N. Anderson, M. Chol, D. Swallow, S. Flanders, E. Hollands (sub)

Emg;
R. Atkins - Full preseason who knows? i would slot him half back, quarterback type role.
S. Day - need that 3rd defender?
J. Corbett - behind Chol
A. Sexton - Flip a coin with Rankine
C. Budarick - Take it easy with knee
J. Jeffery - behind Corbett
B. Uwland - Position maybe off half back?

I saw one of our posters mention concerns about the perceived lack of height in our midfield after Greenwood's departure but I'm not sure it's something we should really be concerned about. Let's compare the players Craig Cameron said would be playing in our midfield in 2022 with a consistent top 4 team over the last three years in Brisbane:

Brisbane's Top 8 Mids
  • Dayne Zorko - 175cm
  • Lachie Neale - 178cm
  • Zac Bailey - 182cm
  • Jarryd Lyons - 184cm
  • Mitch Robinson 184cm
  • Hugh McCluggage - 185cm
  • Cameron Rayner - 186cm
  • Jarrod Berry - 192cm

Our Future Top 8 Mids (according to Craig Cameron)
  • Touk Miller - 178cm
  • Matt Rowell - 180cm
  • Sam Flanders - 183cm
  • Brayden Fiorini - 186cm
  • Jack Bowes - 187cm
  • Elijah Hollands - 189cm
  • Alex Davies - 191cm
  • Noah Anderson - 192cm
I think our mids listed above match up really well with Brisbane in terms of height. If anything, we're actually taller than the Lions and height hasn't been an issue for them at all over the last three years while they've been a consistent top 4 team. Obviously a guy like Brandon Ellis (181cm) is going to be selected in the midfield ahead of someone like Hollands in round 1 next year but that could change pretty quickly when the talented younger guys get their chance next year. Quality shouldn't be an issue either considering our players above include a current All Australian, four top 10 draft picks and three other first round picks. Hard to argue with that midfield quality.

I don't think the height is the issue. It's the experience in the middle.

You could argue that from your list only Miller, Fiorini, Bowes are ready body-wise while Fiorini and Bowes have very limited experience in the middle.

If Swallow, Miller get injuries Greenwood would be handy. In 1 year it's probably a different story. Next year is a crunch time and not having Greenwood may expose us. If I am Dew and was fighting for my career, for sure, I would like to have Greenwood available.

I know I joked in another thread about doing this very early, but why not?

AFL:

W.Powell - S.Collins - S.Lemmens
O.Markov - S.Day - C.Ballard
B.Ellis - M.Rowell - J.Sharp
J.Corbett - M.Chol - B.Ainsworth
I.Rankine - B.King - D.Swallow

J.Witts - T.Miller - B.Fiorini

J.Lukosius - N.Anderson - J.Bowes - L.Weller

SUB - N.Holman

---

VFL:

J.Farrar - R.Thompson - C.Burgess
B.Uwland - S.Brock - C.Budarick
R.Atkins - C.Constable - E.Hollands
M.Rosas - L.Causbolt - S.Flanders
A.Sexton - M.Andrew - J.Jeffrey

N.Moyle - N.Freeman - A.Davies

J.Mclennan - R.Nicholls - M.Conroy - P.Murtagh - C.Graham - H.Oea - D.Macpherson

First of many attempts no doubt, that VFL team will do some damage, so much height though haha.

Last spot on the bench could go to about 4 blokes.

I still like the idea of squeezing Corbett into the team, he would be such an akward matchup getting the 3rd or 4th best defender instead of the 2nd like he did this year. Has to workrate not to be a defensive liability as well.

Feels great to have options.
list certainly feels a bit more balanced IMO.
AFL worthy options in each role. Plus some flexibility across these roles (ie Flanders inside mid

KPD: collins, Ballard, Thompson, brock, Graham
KPF: king, chol, Corbett, Jeffrey, casboult
Key utilities: day, burgess, Andrew’s, murtagh
Ruck: witts, moyle, Conroy

running defenders: Powell, markov, uwland, farrar, Nicholls
Lockdown smalls: lemmens, budarick, McLennan

linking half forwards: Ainsworth, lukosius, Weller, Hollands, oea
Pressure forwards: Holman, flanders, macpherson, rosas
crumbers: sexton, rankine

Inside mids: rowell, swallow, bowes, constable, Davies
Outside mids: Ellis, sharp, atkins
Balanced mids: Miller, Anderson, fiorini

if I’m being ruthless who are certainties for best 22 IMO.
- king, witts, Miller, Anderson, Ellis, lukosius, powell, lemmens, collins, Ballard.
Only these 10 are absolute certainties in my opinion.
Competition for spots up for grabs.

some questions to be answered in pre-season

1. can Sam Day play in defence

Just feeling a bit dubious that he has the strength in a marking contest to take the big guys - lynch, McKay, Hawkins, Dixon etc..
Or the lateral mobility to play on the secondary targets - cameron, Marshall, darling, membrey, himmelburg, hip wood.

I’d only feel ok with him playing on a bigger athletic type that tends to fly for marks rather than beating their opponent with strength or mobility and movement - Logan McDonald, Daniher, Wright, Bruce, Taberner, larkey, mihocek - these kind of guys.

I’m not sure his mobility is what it was when previously played there. can he move laterally??

2. can we find a balance up forward?

King, chol, Corbett, luko, Ainsworth, rankine, sexton seems potent offensively but not quite with the pressure. How to fit Holman and Flanders and who misses out.

3. what condition some of returning injured players

Witts is critically important. An acl for a 110kg 29 year old..got to take it easy.

is Thompson any chance of playing and does he still have his athleticism? Be massive if so but seems unlikely.

4. Can chol build on his promising 2021

playing as a dedicated forward with another recognised ruckman he played quite well in a few games 2021. Was quiet in others. Having him consistently fly for Marks with confidence toeither mark or create crumbs will be massive for our scoring potential if he can bring this.hopefully more maturity and experience = consistency for him.

5. Midfield set up

We know Miller, rowell, Anderson are going to spend a lot of time in there. Swallow will be given minutes too. Where dos that leave Bowes, Flanders, fiorini and where else do they play when not in the guts.

5. our new faces

super excited to see hollands andrews and brock in particular in action.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Spots are tight and depth is looking healthier than it possibly ever has. For me, King is an absolute lock as well though. Still, most of the team is up for grabs!

Also, I want the following players to “level up” (think Will Powell’s sudden leap this year) and take ownership of us winning: Ainsworth and Weller. Ainsworth does everything except kick for goals accurately (good run, good burst speed and endurance, good mark, links up for assists etc.) and Weller needs to find more of the ball to use his damaging kick or his dash to break lines. Both are close to being the players we picked them to be and need to make themselves best 22 locks.

Bowes and Fiorini are the other two, although their position is going to become hotly contested with Constable (and possibly Freeman coming into the team) so their growth is important for them as individuals, but could be replaced by other players for the team if they don’t develop how we want.

However, these 23yo+ players have to step up and support Miller, Swallow, Ellis, Collins and Witts and lead us and the young kids up the ladder.

Yes just left Kingy out accidentally! He’s clearly the number 1 picked.

If Thompson can find his way back to being best 22 key defender then that would be massive for the structure of the team.

Imagine the damage Collins can do as an interceptor if he can be released onto the 2nd best forward and potentially venturing up to half back more often to start our rebounds.

Lachie Weller needs to get involved as often as possible and have the ball in his hands front half of the ground. A beautiful kick and threat for goal anywhere inside 55m.

Finished 253rd in average score involvements league wide last year.
Need that to be top 100 alongside guys like Karl Amon, Tarryn Thomas, Devon Smith, Jack Billings etc..

I agree. But Casboult could be of equal value, if not more than Thompson.
