Analysis BEST 22 Come Finals

Interested to see what others think our best 22 looks like during in September, assuming everyone is available including Rance.

What a freakin headache it would be to pick only 22 guys when we could easily have 26-28 all capable.

Do we play 2 rucks?

Does Caddy hold his spot?

Do we end Ellis's career at Tigerland?

I cant decide and will chop and change 100 times, but below is my first attempt,

Grimes Astbury Pickett
Houli Vlas Rance
Ellis Cotch Edwards
Rioli Jack Lambo
Stack Tom George

Nank Dusty Prestia

Inter: Short Graham Bolton Caddy

Emerg: Ross Broad Chol

I thought the same, but jack actually changed my mind when he said something along the lines of, Rance could be a dual premiership player and that is worth the risk, which got me thinking. Would I miss an entire season to win another Flag at his age? Yes I would. Tough call though

Rance will absolutely play if given the chance, ultimately it won’t be his call though. It’s certainly a head scratcher, I’d be more worried about playing a final one man down if he were to go down early in a game. Still think I’m in the camp he plays if everything gets ticked off by the specialists.

I am still torn, anyone else, its a flat no, but Rance could actually be the difference.

C: Ellis Cotchin Edwards
HF: Castagna Riewoldt Stack
F: Rioli Lynch Bolton
R: Soldo Martin Prestia
INT: Nankervis Caddy Lambert Graham
EMG: KMac Ross Chol Naish

no way in h*** Rance plays. ACL's are a 12 month turn around..he got injured a few months ago. Goldsack was risked because hes worth risking and at the end of his career. Did anyone just see what happened to Morris?

Best finals team:

FB: Broad Astbury Grimes
HB: Houli Short Vlastuin
C: Ellis Cotchin Edwards
HF: Lambert Stack Rioli
FF: Castagna Lynch Riewoldt
Foll: Nankervis Martin Prestia
Int: Bolton Caddy Graham Chol
Emg: Ross Soldo McIntosh

Hardest decision is Chol vs McIntosh.

I hear you. If Rance is thinking of calling it quits sooner rather than later and do some his religious callings, I agree. But he seems willing to go on a few years yet which I'm pleasantly surprised about. BUT, the success rate of not having a recurring injury is so incredibly low at that level on quick returns. I think the 50 year old Rance would tell him to not be fool, but this is the nearly 30 year old bulletproof Rance.... ;)

Rance coming back this year actually might not be in our best interests even if he's a 0% chance of re-injury.

We've changed the way we defend. Buckley said it last week. We hold our back 6 more, and I've got no doubt that's due to Rance being missing. While he'd know about all this, it would take time for him to be integrated properly in the new system, and it would take time to transition our defence to the old system. There's no easy solution to that. It also takes him time to get his eye in, why we're susceptible to big scores against in early rounds usually. After this week, every game we play for the rest of the year will be against top 8, likely top 4 opposition. And they're all pretty much must-win. There's no room for error.
If we hold West Coast in a couple of weeks without Rance, I'm sold he shouldn't return. If they get hold of our defence, that's the only time I'd consider it. And even then it's unlikely.

Good points, but if he comes back, he probably plays Broads role and he's experienced enough, smart enough and been in coaching mode long enough to slot in IMO

Come at me.
I'll come at you.

Pickett hasn't played a senior game and he's best 22????

Let's let the hype train pull in at the station and get him on the field first before we declare him the second coming.

I wouldn't risk Rance unless WC get a hold of us, as has been discussed. Broad for me.
And who is second ruck?

I think Pickett will be best 22, not a star, but will add some height and class without losing run out of the backline. Can also pinch in the guts if we need.

Lynch to give Nank a chop out in the ruck allowing us more runners or mids into the team.

Rance at 70% is 10 times the player Broad is IMO

Rance breaking down is 0% of the player Broad is though.

Lynch, ruck, NO.

Re Pickett, as stated, let's see a coupe of games before he replaces anyone permanently,

FB: Grimes, Astbury, Vlastuin
HB: Houli, Rance, Edwards
C: Pickett, Cotchin, Bolton
HF: Lambert, Riewoldt, Stack
FF: Rioli, Lynch, Castagna
R: Nankervis, Prestia, Martin
I: Graham, Ross, Soldo, Broad

What it will likely be:

FB: Grimes, Astbury, Vlastuin
HB: Houli, Broad, Short
C: Ellis, Cotchin, Edwards
HF: Lambert, Riewoldt, Stack
FF: Rioli, Lynch, Castagna
R: Nankervis, Prestia, Martin
I: Broad, Graham, Caddy, Baker

Kmac seems to have been relegated to the vfl scrap heap by some.
He plays finals imo. Period.

Pickett in our best 22 at this point is optimistic and premature. Let’s hope things turn out in his favour as he’ll be pushing out a valuable player if he makes it.

Rance breaking down is 0% of the player Broad is though.

Lynch, ruck, NO.

Re Pickett, as stated, let's see a coupe of games before he replaces anyone permanently,

If Rance is ready and declared fit, he plays.

Lynch can pinch hit, hes survived all season.

Pickett, its a forecast side based on opinion, if he stinks it up, its obvious he doesnt play.

I am still torn, anyone else, its a flat no, but Rance could actually be the difference.

Could be the difference in losing too. If he goes down in the first 10 minutes of a game, then not only would it disadvantage us, he creates a downer and a distraction on the whole club. The club should end the discussion now and just not entertain it. Whilst as hard as it would be for Rance to watch on, he is our investment too.

Ps. He needs to play AFL standard before the finals start too. Which means we are allowing him to come back, in round 22/23 completely underdone in games that are crucial to us making top 4. Just no.

100% correct, risk v reward

I would hate to be making the decision
