Best 22 for 2009!

I did a team I think we will go with rather than the best 22 right at this moment. I actually hope we play the younger players on our list. If that means it is at the expense of Wheels, Junior and the like so be it. We need to get games into these young blokes. I dont want us to lose but if I had to choose between us winning 3-4 games and players like Grimes, Strauss, Maric, Cheney, McNamara playing 10 + games or us winning 8-9 and the players over 26 being the main contributors I would take the later.

B. Matthew Whelan (45) Stefan Martin (33) Colin Garland (20)
HB. Simon Buckley (1) Jared Rivers (27) Paul Wheatley (31)
C. Cale Morton (10) Brock McLean (5) Colin Sylvia (12)
HF. Brad Green (18) Brad Miller (7) Matthew Bate (6)
F. Aaron Davey (36) Russell Robertson (24) Adam Maric (19)
R. Paul Johnson (11) Cameron Bruce (32) Nathan Jones (2)

Int. Mark Jamar (40) Brent Moloney (22) Lynden Dunn (15) James McDonald (23)

EMG. James Frawley (8) Ricky Petterd (15) Austin Wonaemirri (39)

When Rivers and Moloney get injured again (my guess would be round 5), replace them with Frawley and Grimes. Easy!

What about best 22 for the NAB Cup/Challenge Matches because I want to know what senoir players will actually play in that aka Rivers, Johnson, Moloney and others because of past pre seasons. Maybe someone can make up a team for the that

First Dunn's number is 14.
Second I don't think Dunn will play many matches unless he improves more or goes back into the forward line.
Sylvia will probably play up forward again and have Petterd,Green,Moloney,Grimes on the wing
I like Maric but I think he was only brought in because of injuries so I doubt he would be placed in our best 22 by selectors
Why does everyone have Martin placed at FB I don't think he has a body big enough yet for it. Unless everyone thinks he'll stack on weight over the holidays.
But overall good team although personally I would like to see Petterd, Grimes, Valenti in and Dunn and Jamar out

I am going to go for the 2009 NAB cup team. Be a great chance to play the kids and give them an opputrunity and further develop at afl level.

B James Frawley, Stefan Martin, Clint Bartram

HB Jared Rivers, Colin Garland, James Strauss

C Cale Morton, Brock Mclean (c), Sam Blease

HF Lyden Dunn, Matthew Bate, Colin Sylvia

F Aaron Davey Jack Watts, Addam Maric

R Mark Jamar, Nathan Jones, Brent Moloney

Int Paul Johnson, Jack Grimes, Ricky Petterd, Simon Buckley

EMRG John Meesen, Michael Newton, Jamie Bennell, Neville Jetta

He is already rated as the strongest player at the club, and he has the type of frame where he would definitely be able to put on a few kg's of muscle and keep it on.

As for a NAB cup team, I think it would look a bit like this...

B Kyle Cheney, Stefan Martin, James Frawley
HB Tom Mcnamara, Colin Garland, Ricky Petterd
C Cale Morton, Brock Mclean, Simon Buckley
HF Jack Watts, Matthew Bate, Colin Sylvia
FF Addam Maric, Brad Miller, Austin Wonaeamirri

R Mark Jamar, Lynden Dunn, Nathan Jones
Int John Meesen, Jack Grimes, James Strauss, Whoever is named our captain/ Neville Jetta

All the older players and players coming back from injury will be preserved for the main season.

Thats not a bad team actually. Just not much experience. We'll defenately go out for first round to Hawks but then we'll do alright in the NAB Challenge matches

yes I know but I just don't think he's got the body yet but I'll probably be wrong I just thought maybe in 2010 he'll go Full Back

B: Whelan Garland Martin
HB: Bruce Rivers Warnock
C: Morton Mclean Moloney
HF: Bate Miller Sylvia
F: Robertson Watts Green
Ruck: Johnson Jones Davey
Inter: Blease Dunn Jamar Wonaemirri
Emer: Bell Newton Wheatley

PS: It can be difficult to find a spot for McDonald if Bruce and Whelan is around based on the fact that MFC is injecting youth.

Still one more spot available from Pick 1 in the PSD.

I really hope that this is tongue in cheek. Martin not big enough? He's already about 100kg and as said above he's one of the strongest blokes at the club. Maybe he'll put on a little more muscle, but i wouldn't think that he'd gain to much more weight, maybe 5-6kg at most.

Swap Newton and Robbo and we have a winner.

Almost exactly the side I would have picked.

B Wheelan Martin Garland
HB Green Rivers Petterd
C Morton Mclean Bruce
HF Sylvia Miller Bate
FF Davey Robertson Maric
R Johnson Jones McDonald
INT Jamar Moloney Buckley Dunn

Warnock unlucky but an ideal back up for Rivers, wheatley doesn;t have age on his side would rather see Petterd/Buckley on th HBF. Bate and Jones need to step up and have a good year, like to have dunn on the bench provides versatility can go back forward of mid, but would like to see him up forward. And would love to see more of maric.

Watts to play some senior footy this year, strauss and bail most likely to have most impact of the draftees.

Watts may be a first 22 player but there are many reasons not to play him (or at least straight away or consistently).
1. He'll get injured: his body isn't completely ready for the AFL.
2. He still has to do school, he will not have 100% to train and do all the things full time AFL players do.
3. Risk burning him out

IMO he should be used sparingly to give him the time to develop in to his body, as a player and as a person (ie; allowing him to do well at school and still have a social life). If we treat him well he might be a really good and loyal player for years to come, especially when we could be challenging for the premiership, which is not going to be next year.

FB: Whelan Warnock Martin
HB: Petterd Rivers Garland
C: Morton Moloney Green
HF: Sylvia Miller Bruce
FF: Wonaeamirri Robertson Davey
Foll: PJ McLean Jones
Int: McDonald Buckley Bate Jamar
Emergency: Bell Grimes Newton

I'd have Valenti in if he was promoted.

Best 22:

B Warnock Garland Whelan
HB Buckley Martin Rivers
C Moloney Bruce Morton
HF Green Miller Davey
F Sylvia Robertson Maric
FO Jamar McLean McDonald
IN Jetta Bate Paul Johnson
Grimes

Probably forgotten a few, oh well...

Well i've sat down and done alot of shuffling and made my team that i feel would be our best. I have put some unique choices in, but i feel they could really work

B Matthew Warnock, Stefan Martin, Colin Garland

HB Rowan Bail, Jared Rivers, Ricky Petterd

C James Strauss, Sam Blease, Cale Morton

HF Matthew Bate, Brad Miller, Cameron Bruce

F Brad Green, Paul Wheatley, Addam Maric

R Mark Jamar, Brock McLean, Jack Grimes

Int Paul Johnson, Aaron Davey, Nathan Jones, Austin Wonaeamirri

Emergencies: Simon Buckley, Clint Bartram, James Frawley, Jack Watts, Jamie Bennell, Brent Moloney, Neville Jetta, Colin Sylvia, Russell Robertson, John Meesen, Daniel Bell, Lynden Dunn, Matthew Whelan, Michael Newton

A full-back line of Garland, Warnock and Martin is very solid and will be very good for a long time i feel.

On the half-back line i have gone with Bail coz he looks very ready for AFL and quite quick and classy so he can provide alot from there. Rivers and Petterd will be back in 09 and will add a huge amount to our line-up.

I have gone with a centreline including Blease for speed and dash with polish, complimented by Strauss and Morton (both who are pure class) on the wings. That centreline looks mighty classy to me :)

On the Half-forward line i reckon Bruce can be very very handy like he was in his early days at the dees, he can provide a nice target and kick 30+ goals from half-forward i believe. I believe that Bate and Miller are also best used floating around half-forward as lead-up targets and can work with Bruce to create a very formiddable half-forward line. I really really like this setup.

On the full-forward line i have thrown a spanner in the works. Watts will not be ready and i feel that Wheatley is tall and has good hands, whilst being a very nice, long kick. Wheatley would provide a nice option at full-forward i think. I like the idea of Green playing as a second full-forward and have Wheatley and Green as multiple targets. Maric is a specialist forward-pocketer with dead-eye accuracy and he is a lock in the forward pocket for the next 10 years. This full-forward line is alot better than will be given credit for, i think they could be very successful.

Jamar and Johnson can share ruck duties til Spencer is ready, and i feel that Grimes and Mclean are our best ruck rover combination. I reckon these two will add to the class of the centerline previously mentioned.

It is very very exciting looking at the quality that is still on the list as depth. We have got a good list coming along now and i am really excited...

Blease is bottom aged and probably won't play much next year so it's hard to see him in the best 22. Wheatley is a very average kick managing and incredible 2goals 8 this year and i don't think he's ever taken a contested mark in his life. i struggle to see him getting many games next year let alone one as a KPF

I have no idea why a guy who's already 100kgs needs to put on more size either :D

I mean, if he was an NFL offensive lineman i could understand, but Stef is a big enough boy as it is lol!

You guys don't get hyped up much in the media, but for a while now I've thought that you have an excellent young list. Take out the 6-7 senior players and wait 3-4 years for the rest of these kids to grow and I think you'll be a top 4 side with ease.

You've already got far more depth than Carlton and with Watts the superstar up forward I am confident you'll be better than them and others for a while yet :thumbsu:

Just give it a couple of years.

you have got to be kidding right? Newton has not proven anything over robbo at all. IMO newton is extremely uncoordinated and cant play at ground level, and robbo is the total opposite. And also even though robbo is shorter then newton, can take a better contested mark.

You're assuming two things -

1) Robbo will come back from his injury setback the same player.

2) Newton won't have improved.

I just think everyone rates him a little to highly, and as a KPF his reaction time seems a little slow. And there is just as much of a chance Robbo will come back fit and ready as there is Newton will improve. But hey who knows, but IMO I rate Robbo higher.
