Was just having a play around with how the team might look next season if we have a decent trades/draft period... and where they would fit in?

So say we bring in:
Burgoyne
Greenwood
B.Ellis
Rowell
Anderson
Buderick (Academy)

Something like -

B. Harbrow, Thompson, Hombsch
HB. Burgoyne, Collins, Weller
C. B.Ellis, Brodie, Lukosius
HF. Sexton, Day, Greenwood
F. Ainsworth, King, Rankine

R. Witts, Swallow, Fiorini

Int: Bowes, Macpherson, Miller, Miles

Depth:

Backs:
Key - Graham
3rd tall - Ballard, Burgess
Small - Hanley, Joyce, McLennan, Riordan, Murdoch, C.Ellis, Fletcher

Mids: Rowell, Anderson, Powell, Dawson, Heron, Buderick, Schoenfeld, GHS

Fwds:
Key - Wright, *Crossley
3rd tall - Corbett
Small - Holman, Lemmens, Young

Ruck: Nicholls, *Crossley

Rowell & Anderson to overtake Miller/Miles in our midfield rotations?
Is Hanley best 22 anymore?
No ruck depth if Nicholls moves on?
No experienced midfield depth?
Are Lemmens/Holman best 22?

Rookie targets:
Mature mids, ruck, fwd/ruck?

Where has Burgoyne been playing this year?
Can the old man still keep up with fast flanker forwards?
Could he play on an Orazio Fantasia or a Liam Ryan for instance?

Very difficult to select best 22 with a healthy list. We will again be putting games into our best young talent.

Hanley is probably still best 22 if he has a good preseason. Dew values him.
Ballard has to be in. I would expect Powell is in too provided he recovered from meniscus and has a full preseason.

I hope Brodie nails the starting spot round 1. I have still some doubts.

Rowell/Anderson could start round 1 too.

I would love to see Holman in but his chronic back issues worries me.

Somebody has to go out - Hombsh, Miller, Miles, B Ellis.

Preseason, injuries and form will decide.

Hombsch only plays over Charlie if he's dead
Even then I'd back Charlie in

Yeh, that’s fair. I was just going the experienced option.

I actually think Hombsch is a great 3rd tall defender, just got stuck playing key defender so many times this season due to injury - which he cannot do.

I loved Ballard on the wing last season in the NEAFL. Really played the tall running wingman very well.

Maybe Ballard on 1 wing, Lukosius on the other? And forget expensive B.Ellis altogether!?

I would love that. Probably still too early for them? Ballard grew up as a midfielder. Though Powell will probably own the wing in a couple of years.

Ever since I saw Ballard in one of his first games at Metricon contest a mark on the members side half back then chase and tackle the next contest that was on the outer side half forward line I hoped he could play further up the ground, but I think he'll be too valuable in defence

I think Hombsch playing on the 3rd best tall forward would be great. Has shown he can take an intercept grab and is capable by foot, I think Ballard will turn out to be a much better option in the long run but I still have questions over his foot skills.

I like Sexy higher up the ground
I get the feeling that he and the Club see him as a quasi-mid in the Breust Smith model
Yeah needs to be playing that high half forward role. Press up the ground but also get on his bike and race down back towards goal if we get a clean break. He has the tank and the speed for it

Here's my attempt, assuming we get Burgoyne B.Ellis Rowell and Anderson and all players are fit. Teams will be a lot different if we also get Greenwood Betts Ellis-Yolmen and any other trade-ins.

FIRSTS.

FB...Harbrow Thompson Ballard
HB...Burgoyne Collins Lukosius
C.....B.Ellis Swallow Weller
HF... Sexton Wright MacPherson
FF...,Rankine King Ainsworth
R.....Witts Brodie Miles
Int...Bowes Day Rowell Fiorini

EDIT: Burgoyne replaced by Hombsch

NEAFL.
FB...Hombsch Graham McLennan
HB...Hanley Burgess Joyce
C.....Powell GHS Murdoch
HF...Holman Lemmens Anderson
FF...Young Corbett Heron
R....Nicholls Riordan Miller
Int..Fletcher C Ellis Dawson Schoenfeld

EDIT: Hombsch replaced by Wigg

Under the assumption we pick up Burgoyne and Ellis as well as Rowell.

Ballard - Thompson - Harbrow
Hombsch - Collins - Hanley
B.Ellis - Swallow - Weller
Sexton - Wright - Ainsworth
Rankine - King - MacPherson

R: Witts - Brodie - Fiorini

Inter: Miles - Bowes - Rowell - Lukosius
That is a solid and pretty experienced team, for us. Decent depth across all the lines as well.

EDIT: Had to take Burgoyne out :'(

A little off topic but just wanted to give praise to Fiorini. I started to take notice of him at the start of this year. The kid is a ball magnet. He'd have to be in the top 10 22 year-olds in the game. Yet I hear nothing about him in the media in Melbourne. When I watch GC games on Fox Footy Dermott Brereton and Mark Ricciuto sing his praises but hardly anyone else in the media even knows who this kid is. Got named in the 22under22 squad but since it is fan voted he was never a chance to make the 22. Imagine if he played for a Melbourne-based club like Collingwood or my boys Melbourne, there would be a new article about him every day. Keep working hard young fella, you'll get the recognition you'll deserve someday!

We should see good things from him next year together with Ainsworth, Bowes, Brodie, Macpherson. This was his first full season.

He can certainly find it which is step one
Hurt factor will come with more support, ball movement and forward presence.
