With this thread being about round 1 this may not be the place to ask this question, and given i can see some backlash I"m tempted not to ask it....but since i've thought about it more than once, what the hell ...... I've given up on Dan Jackson for round 1, but just say he's ready round 3 or whatever, is he still automatic selection considering the form and depth of Miles, Thomas, Madonna and options such as Anott, Banfield? I seems crazy to think like this given Jacko's form last year, B and F and all, leadership group etc etc, and some of the guys above are only rookies. I personally this DJ's credentials and form pick him automatically (when right) for a decent run at it (5-10 games) but beyond that I see we have many other developing options and could easily see him dropping back in the pecking order come end of year. Not a bad thing for depth, just really weird to think about give last year.

Interesting one. If Richmond get off to a flyer in round 1 and 2 with both rookies (Thomas and Miles) being best in both games, who would Jackson replace in round three? How could you drop players that have both been best on in a winning formula? What a great problem to have lol

This is literally the toughest Round 1 squad I have ever had the honour of picking.

B: Morris, Astbury, Rance
HB: Houli, Chaplin, Vlastuin
C: Grigg, Martin, Ellis
HF: Miles, Griff, Newman
F: Riewoldt, Vickery, Shedwards
R: Hampson, Cotchin, Deledio
Int: Pettard, Thomas, Conca
Sub: Madonna

Emg: King, Foley, Lloyd

HB: Vlastuin 187 86 18 Chaplin 195 97 162 Martin 187 90 86
C: Houli 180 84 91 Thomas 186 87 87 Ellis 181 84 42
HF: Deledio 188 89 195 Riewoldt 195 92 134 S.Edwards 182 81 129
F: Newman 183 81 233 Vickery 200 98 75 Griffiths 200 102 19

INT: Conca 185 83 52 McDonough 180 82 1 Petterd 185 85 66

I've got the above 21 locked in for next week, but the last spot is just too hard to lock away. It could go to anyone of:
Knights 184 84 101
A.Edwards 184 93 91
King 178 82 105
Gordon 186 86 3
Foley 178 79 136
Lloyd 180 83 0
Arnot 180 86 4
Banfield 183 83 53
Miles 179 80 10

At the moment I have Miles as my favorite ahead of Foley Arnot Lloyd & Knights

I think at this stage I would add King and delete Petterd, with Mcdonough maybe the sub. Then you have potentially Foley, Gordon, Arnot, Miles that can play also. Tough calls for rd 1.

B: Morris Rance Astbury
HB: McDonough, Chaplin, Vlas
C : Grigg Thomas Ellis
HF: Martin, Riewoltd Shedwards
F: Griffiths Vickery King
R: Hampson Cotch Lids
B: Conca , Newman Houli
Sub: Jackson

Emerg A Edwards, Knights, Foley, Pet, Banfield, Grimes

Jackson sub as he hasn't played any footy I wouldn't be surprised if he missed actually.

Best thing is so much depth

Nearly every player is under the pump to perform.

Grimes and Astbury
King and Banfield
Griff trying to make a claim for when Ivan is back.
Ricky P / Newman
Thomas/Miles - Jackson

Lots of competition for spots right there

Going on who has played the NAB games and who has been left in the VFL/on the sidelines, I find it unlikely that King will come in same with Foley Arnot & Gordon. Miles probably the best chance of coming in, as I doubt we'll take in anyone that is underdone, especially given we're up at Gold Coast.

Swap Miles for King then lock it in.

If King isn't ready then Foley instead, but McDonough starts on, Foley or Petterd sub.

Thomas to make an instant impact in the centre at the first bounce.

Thought King wasn't going to play due to being in the VFL (?) side both times, was just being eased into it.

Foley could've gone in easily, was really between him and Matty Thomas.

I've always said that we'll become a better team when Jacko is not an automatic selection (actually I've said it a bit stronger than that) and up until last year I stood by that statement. He really made me eat my words last year...

The depth and evenness we have across our top 26-30 players now (I haven't actually counted so it could be more) is the most impressive in my time following the Tigers (only from about 86 though...). I think we can now pick our best 22 on form, rather than reputation, so if a player coming off a great season (such as Jacko) needs to have a hitout in the 2's before coming into the side then so be it. It's not like we have Tim Fleming, Hislop, Blurton or Reynolds replacing him..... Miles or Thomas have shown enough so far to be able to replace him (short term).

This isnt the team that I would pick if I was chairman of selectors... This is the 22 I think will run out Saturday night.

B: Morris Astbury Rance

C: Grigg Cotch Ellis
HF: dusty Vickery Conca
F: titch Jack Griff

Foll: hampson deledio Thomas

Grigg, Deledio, Ellis
Conca, Riewoldt, Griffiths
Newman, Vickery, S. Edwards
Hampson, Cotchin, Thomas,
Vlastuin, Petterd, Miles sub: McDonough

I'm not sure about the fitness of Grimes and King at this stage.

and I forgot Foley...bring him in for McDonough - not certain on this guys ability to play a full game of AFL at this stage, despite his good performances recently.

no matter which way it goes, there will be some hard done by players that don't play...
Reckon some of our older and injury prone and younger players are gunna be managed at around 13 - 17 games apiece in order to have everyone fresh and rarin to go come sept if we make it..newman, chaps, mullet, grimes, foley, king and knights quickly spring to mind as well as a couple of cubs like lennon and bean.

May be Newman instead of King but he has a small injury cloud over him at present. I'd love to see Miles come in too but it would more than likely come at the expense of Foley or Thomas. Could actually take McDonough's spot as sub in round one though (assuming he's elevated).

I agree though, really tough selection calls this year. Grimes would surely be pushing for Astbury's spot too. How Griffith performs in the small window Maric has offered him at present will be very interesting too.

Rance Astbury Morris ( locked)
Houli Chaplin Martin ( locked )
Grigg Cotchin Ellis ( locked )
Jack Griff Newman
Lloyd Vickery lids

Foll: Hampson Thomas Conca
Int : McDonough, S Edwards , Vlaustin
Sub:Arnott

Left: Pettard , King out for more inside mid grunt.
I don't want S.Edwards , Grigg or Lids having to play inside and I still have question marks over Thomas , Arnott or Miles ability to play out a full game .
Miles for Arnott wouldn't surprise .
Griffith , Astbury , Thomas , McDonough , Lloyd and Arnott/ miles have done enough to be rewarded with a spot .
Plenty of blocks who were cruising last year are on the edge

Astbury Rance Morris
Houli Chaplin Vlastuin
Grigg Deledio Ellis
Martin Vickery Newman
S.Edwards Riewoldt Griffiths
Hampson Cotchin Conca
Thomas McDonough Petterd Foley (sub)

Jackson comes in for McDonough if fit.

What will the team look like. Assuming Jackson and Ivan, won't play, here's what I think?

FB: Morris, Astbury, Rance
HB: Ellis, Chaplin, Houli
C: Deledio, Vlastuin, Foley
HF: King, Riewoldt, Newman
FF: Griffiths, Vickery, S. Edwards
R: Hampson, Cotch, Martin
Bench; Knights, Conca, Thomas, Miles (S)

Couldn't fit Grigg in, but I don't think any of these guys should miss out. Your thoughts?

I'd say they'll line up something like this

B: Morris Rance Astbury

Spare: Martin

HB: Vlastuin Chaplin Madonna

C: Ellis Deledio Grigg
R: Hampson Conca Thomas

HF: Shedwards Jack Newman

F: Ty Cotchin

Int: Houli Petterd Griff Sub King/Foley

Em: Grimes A Edwards Knights Gordon LLoyd Elton Banfield Arnott
