Prediction Best 22 in 2020

No. I’ve always thought he needs to improve his tank. He’s a wonderful talent. Plus, I think to beat Richmond or most good teams we would be better with an extra small. Now that Cameron and HH are more mature they know how to make more contests and bring the ball to ground at the very least. We need those ground level players to support that.
That is reasonable, he has limitations.
Think his brilliant moments get him in myself, but your logic is sound.

Finlayson can be a real headscratcher. When he's on, he can rip a side apart - and I like that all 3 of our tall forwards are mobile. But he seems to be a constant challenge for the coaching staff and headspace gurus to keep focussed. As I've said previously, I do think that we'll generally continue with the 3 talls in the side - Leon has long & consistently selected that way. I do think that when a good second ruck is required, for example against Grundy, we might try Keiran Briggs in that role sometime this year. But I wouldn't be surprised if Finlayson's in a down patch that, against specific teams, we opt for a shorter forward line to throw in some quicker and creative small/medium forwards. With Cogs back and able to kick goals, TT being looked at to take some more forward time and create scores, Whitfield & Kelly able to rotate forward and create both midfield and forward opportunities, and the options of Toby Greene, Hill, Langdon, Daniels & Lloyd, we could be pretty potent up front no matter how we structure.

I don't think Finlayson gets dropped, but I'm absolutely on board if he does.

His lack of attack shows less up forward, and he has games where he absolutely smashes it unlike down back, but it can and has come back to bite us when playing some of the harder teams out there. I suspect he'll be gone at the end of the year if he puts anything approaching a decent year together because someone will go harder at him, so why not play Langdon and Daniels together?

My pre, pre season Rd 1 best 22

Davis Corr Taylor
Williams Shaw Haynes
Whitfield Kelly Perryman
Cameron Finlayson Coniglio
Greene Himmelberg Daniels
Sauce Taranto Hopper
Langdon De Boer Caldwell Reid

Depth/Emergencies - Lloyd, Buntine, Cumming, Kennedy, Hately, Hill, O'halleron, Green, Ash, Mummy, Idun, Keefe. Not necessarily in that order.

There's a few others that deserve to be considered for depth/emergencies.

It will be interesting to see if anyone stands out over the 2 pre season matches coming up.

Injuries: Ward, Flynn

This was harder to do than I originally thought.

With MDB back fit and firing I'm not sure there's a spot for a second lock down specialist (Reid) in the team. I like him and know they use him on dangerous smaller opposition forwards but his ball use coming out of the back half is just so suspect.

I'd definitely have Finlayson in Rd 1. Not sure if the recency syndrome (ie poor GF) is at play here? I thought he had an outstanding 2019.

Reid’s disposal efficiency has improved each of the past 4 years since his comeback.
2016: 57%
2017: 64%
2018: 71%
2019: 77%

He also averaged more disposals per game in 2019 than ever before. A fine wine - improving with age

I agree with Danny on Finlayson, unless there's other factors at play. On Reid, I think those stats and his general performance these last couple of years will keep him up in contention, and maybe get him a guernsey early, but also think that someone with more x factor can eclipse him. It's a question of how soon. I could be surprised and he lasts a long time in the team - but then I'd be disappointed in the progress of our recent draftees.

I'd really like to see a lower level breakdown on these stats. My guess is he's improved these numbers by being coached to avoid disposals that carry any type of risk. E.g. handball rather than kick wherever possible and kick long if forced.

I have vivid memories of occasions in 2019 when he was inexplicably given the kick in duties and tried to spot a short target and the resulting shank came back over his head for a goal.

I agree.
He is whole hearted, but his ball use is very frustrating.
He gives his all which makes me like him, but he lacks the class of many others in the squad and will struggle to hold out the more skilled players.
Especially with Perryman and Cogs firing, they will play accountable roles on dangerous players when required. Difference is those guys can still do a bit the other way at the same time.

Doubt we would line up this way but would love to see something similar during the season.

N.B.
*Whitfield/Williams/perryman mid/def rotation
*Caldwell/Greene/Cogs/MDB mid/fwd rotation
*sauce 60% ruck 30% fwd
*mummy 40% ruck 10% fwd
*Sauce/mummy double team could be a real point of difference. Sauce is a great contested mark so could rest forward 1 out in the square while mummy softens the oppo ruck up.

I'm pretty close to your thoughts there JC100 - probably just the ruck situation/third tall where I have different thoughts (but happy if your combo works). Guess we'll see what happens there, and I note there was an afl.com.au article today about the potential use of both Mummy & Sauce (lots of speculation but little fact).

Love your alternative thinking JC100 but there is no way finlayson and shaw are left our of RND 1 unless injured

Cheers Danny88. Not suggesting that as a round 1 side as I think Finlayson and Shaw have the runs on the board but it’s a best 22 for later in the year as I’m not convinced Shaw is best 22 in a premiership side and I’m on the fence a bit about whether we can win a premiership with 1 ruck. For me Finlayson would be the one that would make way for a second ruck(although 2019 was a great year for him). My big worry with Finlayson is whether his game will hold up under the pressure in September. I feel most of the sides we would potentially play in September wouldn’t stress to much about defending him.

I’m very interested to see how my penno boy Briggs goes this afternoon as it would be good to see him start coming through. Playing forward/ruck might be an easier transition into the AFL than coming straight in as the number 1.

what your lad opinion on Perryman his upcoming season.

Seemed to come on bit last year but what role do you also see him playing?
Yep, he's going very well and hopefully continues that development from last year. While I (personally) worry a little about his lack of speed, it's his footballing skills - nous, great hands, good vision, good kicking - that's rightfully keeping him right in the mix. While in the past he has played more a defence & utility role, we seem to be looking at him for a wing role in the pre-season discussions that we've seen. Fingers crossed for him.

I expect a break out year from him.
I think he'll probably play a variety of positions, quite.often with a run with type role.
I think he will be very good this year.
