Hawks round 1 will play

Reeves McEvoy Lewis Kosi Gunston

Goldy CCJ Larkey Comben Bull
One of CCJ, Goldstein and Comben always on the bench, if we have a lead in the second half, Larkey or Goldy to drop back.

We really struggled without marking options around the wings, and extra tall should rectify this.

With such a young midfield we’re going to need the bench spot for them. Don’t have the luxury of rotating a tall off the bench imo.

Certainly not way off.

Walker might not be needed depending on who we are playing. McDonald could switch back to cover that.

Obviously we don’t know when Cunners will be back, so Phillips would be in for him.

Personally I like Comben, Larkey and CCJ all playing but others disagree.

But we really do have depth in most positions. Other than key back.

Good effort.

You have left the captain JZ out and he will be picked at half back; Cunners wont play and its a toss up between Taylor and Ford for that floating forward position but your effort will be as close as anyones at this stage of pre season. Well done.

You’ve done well. Very close to my team other than 1-2 minor changes such as Cunners won’t play round 1

I’d go cunners and anderson out for Phillips and ziebell

This was my effort. 16 of my starting 22 I think are absolute locks, so for that reason it's similar to a lot of other efforts on here. I included the sub and emergencies to give me an idea of who I had left out that was on the cusp. While doing this exercise my main takeaway was that our depth is paper thin, I went through our list 20 times to make sure I hadn't missed anyone obvious but could only find players with less than 25 total games and Jared Polec.

Yeah, depth is the major issue now. It's why I think finals are absolutely no chance this year. If we even have half as many injuries as last year we'll finish bottom four.

I found the forward line and hb/medium defenders hardest to pick during my earlier best 22s. A lot of developing depth and new height in the forward line, whilst the backline has a lot of unknowns (Perez), players still finding their way (Bonar/Young/Atu) and older players.

You also can't help but look at other leagues around the world and see that depth is now more important than ever due to how many athletes are testing positive to COVID-19.

We're at a point with the virus where we can protect people enough to let it sweep through the community, but for us that means we might end up needing every player on our list to play at some point.

I think our depth is starting to look pretty solid (baring injuries of course).

This is how i see the round 1 team looking:

FF: Sleevo Larkey Zurhaar
RR: Goldstein LDU Simpkin

Ruck: Xerri

Injured:
Cunners, Bonar

LMac won the club B&F playing across half back .
Would still hold hope of slipping Polac on the wing & Lmac to half back line .
also Fordy , Perez , Atu , Lazzaro , Curtis & Scott , very unlucky to miss out

Agree with you there Ross. Surprised hardly anyone has Polec in their team and i prefer LMac on hbf too. A fit Polec and Stevo would be our best wingers, though I can't see us playing both there as both are attack minded.

My current thinking.
I have gone a lot shorter than most teams in here. 2 x KPD's, 2xKPF's and no tall on the bench.
As good as Comben has looked I agree with the recruitment team when they said we need to improve our forward pressure.
3 x 2m tall forwards + Zurhaar wont improve our pressure at all.

Ziebell back to the guts to protect the kids alongside Greenwood.

Thomas to do as he pleases rolling forward from HB.

Cunnington and Anderson unavailable.

What do we think our coaching staff will do with our defenders in the early rounds of 2022?

Ziebell, McKay, Corr and Hall would all appear to be more or less locked in for selection unless something bizarre happens.

If you want to blood youngsters above all else, I guess you could drop one or two of them, but I wouldn't bet on our coaching staff feeling the same.

Then there's Turner. A fixture in this iteration of our side. Played in every game last year. Again, the odd person here has him out of their Best 22. He could be replaced, I guess, but he's more likely than not to get a guernsey, right?

Which leaves the sixth position and something on the interchange. From this interstate perspective, the most likely suitors in the early rounds would appear to be:

- LMac (who obviously can start as a wingman instead, and might be preferred in the backline against teams with smaller fwd lines)
- J Walker (if a third big body is required instead)
- Perez
- Bonar
- Atu

Based on what some of those who've internal mail and/or witnessed training, I want to include Goater here too. But the kid is so young, and there's enough promise from some of those who've been in the system for long enough for it to mean something. He sounds fantastic, but it'd be odd to see him get a opportunity before proving himself at the VFL, right?

Then you have Hore, who's shown himself to be AFL standard, so long as his body doesn't break down. His availability for AFL selection is a bit harder to predict, because we don't know what's going to happen to Anderson yet. But surely he's in contention if Jed departs.

And then, less likely: P. Walker, Hayden, McGuinness and Archer.

For those with more intel than I: does Perez give the signs of being a frontrunner to take that sixth spot? Unless the extra 10cm / 10kg / 120 games experience is required from Walker? In contrast, how do we feel about the competition? Am I right in thinking Bonar and Atu would be two most likely?

Perez apparently training the house down according to the track watchers.
Bonar looked great when he had a clear run at things for the first half of last season.
I'm far less sold on Turner than most.
