Good evening guys , I come in peace!
Just a question regarding Dyl Roberton., how is he now looking ., will he be right for round 1 if not how far away. Genuinely concerned for him as I know what it’s like to have a dodgy ticker...
Good luck for the season sainters

Unfortunately we are all in the dark on this one. Hopefully we find out over the next few days.

Exactly why the club has to move past him and find alternatives and let him sort out his issues in the VFL or retire.
If he plays on, he needs to spend time at Sandy to develop.

Just too much risk playing him. Like going out with 17 men.

Otherwise drop him down back and get us a settled front 6.

The worry for me about Paddy is that the knock he got on the weekend wasn't that bad and it still caused him issues , what happens if he really cops a decent head knock , i would think he would be seriously weighing up his future, there are whispers out there that he will pull the pin , not sure if there is any truth in them though

For his own sake he should seriously consider retirement from footy.
Its not worth your long term health.

When you compare him to other players at his position Dunstan is a pretty poor inside mid. He basically lives around the ball and stoppages yet can only manage the same contested possessions as Seb Ross which is around 9-10. That’s fine for Seb because he can do a lot of other things but a poor effort for someone who’s in the team to win the ball and can’t do anything else. Doesn’t come close to making up for it defensively or with his ball use.

I’d have him in the team for now but until he starts averaging 12-13 contested possessions a game it’s a pretty easy decision for me who misses out when Steven and Hannebery are ready.

I agree to a point, contested possessions are a bullshit stat, the player only has to take control of the ball with in 5 meters of an opposition player. Not really the same as winning a one on one from a stoppage and clearing it. Ross might be getting the ball in traffic and not actually winning it in a scramble. I noticed on the weekend Ross was at at least a couple of bounces as an inside mid. Perhaps insurance, but he is generally an outside option that sets up at the back of the ruck contest and runs past for the receive.

Cripps, Oliver, Mitchell, Fyfe, Cunnington, Dangerfield, Neale, Kennedy, Lyons , Viney.
top 10 contested ball winners. I don't see it as quite a bullshit stat.

Its a different bunch to the top disposers.
Mitchell , Mackrae, Crouch, Laird , Gaff, Neale, Ross, Hunter , Cripps, Trelour

Clearances
Mitchell, Cripps, Viney, Lyons, Neale, Ward , Fyfe, Shoey, Cunnington, Oliver

Center clearances.
Viney, Martin, Cripps, Fyfe, Mitchell, Maynard, Brody , Steven , Neale, Oliver, Ward

Kennedy only appears on the top list, i'd still have him in a heartbeat.

Yeah , i think your right , time to hang them up
I'm not calling it but genuinely think it will be forefront in his mind, in discussions with specialists and the club.
Regardless of whether he wants to consider it or not.

Every knock he now gets is considered "serious". With his greater vulnerability to the effects of concussion, as he is a diabetic, he should cut his losses and retire. He's probably already done irreparable damage. He has 60 years of life ahead of him. I am willing to bet, that even at this early stage, he will feel the full effects in his 30's and 40's. Sad.

Sad but true.
Concussion effects are compounding and the future is already very unknown for Paddy and others who suffer the same issue.

It's a good stat but the way it's recorded is not accurate in assessing the true contested possessions of a player. Not all contested possessions are the same. A guy who wins first use with a guy shoulder to shoulder with him wins a contest, someone like Gaff or Ross might be close to a player but streaming forward with the guy 4 paces behind him. Recorded the same as each other.

I don’t think that’s an accurate definition of how contested possessions are recorded. There is a reason coaches speak so regularly on its significance. Below is Champion Data’s criteria for contested possessions.

* Hard Ball Get (win disputed ball while physically beating an opponent at ground level)
* Loose Ball Get (win other disputed ball at ground level – ie. right place, right time)
* Contested Knock-on (knocking the ball out of a pack to a teammate’s advantage – Hawthorn do this a lot)
* Gather from Hitout to Advantage (similar to looseball get, but the ball was fed from the ruckman’s tap)
* Free Kicks (excluding those paid off the ball or downfield)
* Contested Marks (all marks where an opponent had a chance to mark or spoil – not including marks on lead)

I gotta say, I'm trying hard to be more concerned about the injuries than I am.

Carlisle? Yep, a bummer, no doubt.
Brown? Has unprecedented fitness, but he's just a stopper. I think somebody like Joyce will do fine against the Suns for a week.
Steven? Sounds like he'll be back.
Roberton? It's a real worry... but McKenzie started looking quite formidable in that position by the end of last year.
McKenzie? Played in the VFL, might be a little underdone, but should be fine.
Acres? See McKenzie.
McCartin? I'd pick Marshall over him anyway, truth be told. Structurally it makes more sense, and I don't think Paddy's that good.
Clav? So he was good in training? So was Joyce. So was Battle. We'll survive.
Hanners? Not a loss because we've never had him yet. He's a bonus if he gets out there.
Longer? I'd rather Pierce anyway.
Pierce? He'll have had three weeks to recover from a concussion. Should be fine, if a little underdone... which won't matter, because he'll share the ruck duties with Marshall.

Put simply, this is the team I suspect we'll pick. And frankly, I think it's fine.

FB. Geary | Joyce | Savage
HB. Roberton/ | Battle | Webster
McKenzie
RK: Billings | Pierce | Gresham
C: Ross | Newnes | Steele
HF: Parker | Marshall | Membrey
FF: Long | Bruce | Lonie
IC: Acres, Kent, Dunstan, Clark
EM: Sinclair, Hind, somebody else.

That should be fine for Week 1 against the Suns. Honestly, if that team can't beat the Suns when they have Thompson and Rankine out already, all the talk of improvement is complete garbage. Would it be nice to have Bob, Hanners, Brown, Carlisle in there? Sure, but we're not exactly playing West Coast in Perth. Respect the opposition, sure, but let's not go crazy here.

Maybe they have updated the definitions then. I heard that on SEN last year so maybe it's changed.

Honestly, I was watching Clavarino at the Intra very closely and White looked better playing in a similar role. His games I saw at Sandringham last year were underwhelming and he looked years off playing seniors at that point. The most eventful thing that happened when Clav was playing Intra was big Lewy was throwing him around like a rag doll and he went down with the ankle seconds later. I doubt very much he was in our round one plans.

Spot on.
Your “somebody else” should be Coffield.

Just out of interest has what Gerard Whately said about Robbo today been discussed and does anyone know where he got the info from. And if no one knows what I talking about he said the first test showed some issues with the heart. He isn't the type to make things up. Usually needs a reasonable source for him to say something like that.

Didn’t hear, sorry.
No doubt he’ll repeat it on 360 tonight,

It was already confirmed it was "heart related" but that's a long way from a diagnosis.

Maybe the defib fired when it shouldn't or didn't fire early enough. Maybe he just ran too much!

I prefer to wait for actual news before jumping to conclusions.

From the article posted in the media thread which said he's still a chance for R1:

"He had played a JLT game, another practice match, match simulation at training and passed stress tests before, at the end of the second JLT game, he suffered another heart irregularity."

Is his heart being live monitored? It doesn’t quite add up given the issue was raised by Robbo himself post game & doesn’t appear to have been picked up during the match. I’m struggle to get my head around this incident.

I doubt anyone's monitoring it live.

It's a good sign that Robbo himself is confident of playing in R1. If it was bad news I doubt he'd be saying that.

His heart is constantly monitored but its done by the mini defib that was implanted after the last episode.

It constantly monitors the pulses sent to the heart and kicks in when required.

Someone in my family had one and my understanding was that early on they may need to "fine tune" it to make it fires when actually required.

Its possible that it fired after the game on a misread signal and that's part of what they would be checking at the moment.

Some info that might help

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)

The heart has an electrical system that regulates the heartbeat. With every heartbeat, there is an electrical signal that follows through your heart, causing it to contract and pump blood. When this process doesn’t happen properly, you could have an abnormal heart rhythm (or arrhythmia) and may need an ICD fitted.

Once the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) senses that you’re having a heart rhythm problem, the pulse generator sends a signal to correct it.
  • Pacing signals correct a heartbeat that is a bit too fast or too slow. You will probably not notice these signals
  • Cardioversion is a mild shock used if ventricular tachycardia (fast heartbeat) continues even after the pacing signals are sent. This can feel like a sudden thump in the chest that lasts for just a moment
  • Defibrillation is a strong shock that is sent if your heart goes into ventricular fibrillation. This sudden shock can feel like being punched in the chest. The shock may be surprising or briefly painful, but it is intended to save your life.
The ICD can also record your heart’s electrical activity, so that the doctor can adjust its settings during follow-up appointments.
