My round 1 team as it stands now knowing the current fitness etc:

Long Howard Wilkie
Clark Carlisle Robbo
Hill Hanners Billings
Gresham Ryder Kent
Butler King Membrey
Marshall Ross Steele

Dunstan Coffield Jones Battle

Emg: Lonie Sinclair Hind Paton

We will find out more in the Marsh series, but Battle will the interesting one to see what they do with him. Maybe either one of Wilkie or Robbo miss out as he showed great progress last year and has more scope than the above 2.

King is another and whether they play all the above listed talls. If one drops out in King/Wilkie/Robbo then we bring in another runner in Sinclair.

I personally rate Kent over Lonie or Hind so that's my preference to have him in. Butler coming in makes him the specialist small forward while Kent knows how to push further up the ground and has a good peg on him.

Geary/Webster/Parker seem to have some injuries so they will be missing out. Can't have any players under done going into games esp early on and none imo are 100% starters.

Hoping that Ross get the captaincy because I rated what Paton bought to the side last season and a few more players should push Geary out of the 22.

Westoff & Tomlinson prob the closest examples I can think of as tall wingman/utilities. Roo, Hird, Richo & Jack have played the role as well.

The Crows reckon Tex is going to play wing this year too.

This is my current team:
B: Long - Howard - Wilkie
HB: Roberton - Carlisle - Clark
C: Hill - Ross - Billings
HF: Gresham - Ryder - Butler
F: Lonie - King - Membrey
Foll: Marshall - Steele - Hannebery
Int: Jones - Coffield - Battle - Dunstan

There are still a number of questions which I hope the pre season games will answer:
1. Is Roberton fit enough to slot in round 1?
2. Is Geary still best 22?
3. Will Dunstan be replaced by, what seems like, the more talented Bytel?
4. Does Battle have a position in the side, or are we trying to just put him in there and hope something works?
5. Is Lonie still best 22? Should he be replaced by a Hind, Kent or Parker when fit?

1. Hopefully
2. No
3. Not in round 1
4. Yes he’s position is forward
5. No, Lonie is still best 22

What does he need rested from?

Hanners, Geary and Roberton are all being managed from injuries this preseason which is why they are only playing 2 of 3 games.

Fair point. If it gets close in the last we should put him and our best 7 on the bench.

If all available for round one:

F
Dan Butler
Max King
Jack Lonie
HF
Jack Billings
Tim Membrey
Jade Gresham
C
Zak Jones
Sebastian Ross
Brad Hill
HB
Hunter Clark
Josh Battle
Dylan Roberton
B
Callum Wilkie
Jake Carlisle
Jarryn Geary
FOLL
Rowan Marshall
Dan Hannebery
Jack Steele
INT
Paddy Ryder
Jack Sinclair
Shane Savage
Jimmy Webster
EMG
Dougal Howard
Nick Coffield
Luke Dunstan
Nick Hind
Ben Long
Ben Paton
Matthew Parker

Keep an eye on Paton, he performs well consistently at a higher level. Battle was too good down back last year, no one has taken his spot IMO. If King or Membrey miss, Battle can go forward and another key back take his place. Parker/Hind can replace Butler/Lonie. Plenty of options to replace defenders. Who knows how many kids will step up this year too! Bring it on

Still plenty of pre season to go, but this is my guess at the eventual round 1 team

B: Geary, Howard, Wilkie
HB: Roberton, Carlisle, Long
C: Hill, Steele, Billings
HF: Butler, Membrey, Kent
F: Lonie, King, Ryder

Foll: Marshall, Gresham, Ross
Int: Jones, Hannebery, Savage, Clark

My personal preference would be

B: Savage, Howard, Wilkie
HB: Clark, Carlisle, Roberton
C: Hill, Steele, Billings
HF: Parker, Membrey, Gresham
F: Lonie, Battle, Ryder

Foll: Marshall, Hannebery, Ross
Int: Jones, Coffield, Hind, Sinclair

I'm not at all convinced by Kent or Butler and prefer Parker/Hind. Really don't like what we're doing with Battle at the moment. He looked good as a forward early and good as a defender last year, but I think we should let him settle into a position rather than make him have to find his feet playing all over the ground and potentially losing a spot because of it. King is still a fair way off it and should string some good VFL form together before playing seniors. The Marshall/Ryder puzzle is going to be interesting - both are very good ruckman, Marshall is a good forward and Ryder is an ordinary forward. I think we might end up seeing a lot more of Marshall forward than many expect. I am very excited to have Hill in the team. Hill and Clark are going to inject class and run that we've been lacking for a decade.

Round 1

b: geary Howard Wilkie
Hb: Clark Carlisle roberton
C: billings Steele hill
Hf: butler membrey kent
F: lonie Ryder king
Foll: Marshall Ross gresham
Int: coffield Jones dunstan Hannebery

emer: long savage battle Sinclair

didn’t see enough from long last night to demand a spot. Probably battling coffield for the last defender spot and coff was Better last night. Midfield looks seriously good now, especially if blokes like dunstan are firing. Think lonie and butler are locks for round 1 it’s just whether or not we play kent or someone like Sinclair? Battle is really interesting, didn’t get near it last night but was thrown all over the shop. Not needed in the midfield, if we are playing king there’s no room in the forward line and down back he’s probably battling (see what I did there) with roberton/ Wilkie. The depth is unreal with blokes like Parker, hind, Paton, Marsh, Webster, bytel and brown not even making my emergency list.

Hey guys surely Gresham gets a starting mid spot? At a cherry ripe age ready to explode and looked great last night.

Asking for fantasy purposes, what do you guys think?
He spent the great majority of his on-field time last season in the guts (hence kicking just 15 goals, when he probably would have kicked 40 had he kept playing mainly forward), and would often start matches in there, and if last night is anything to go by I'm not sure this year will be much different.

Looks like he might be about to explode in there. Only a matter of time, IMO.
