Pray that Ben Reid wants to play with his brother when he comes out of contract

Be nice. Looking at everyones 22s i think the main hole in our premiership ambitions is that big strong defender. There are plenty of good defenders but when we face the top teams and deal with cloke, dawes, hawkins, franklin etc im not convinced we have that guy to take the main match up.

Yes and the unfortunate thing is the teams we need to beat to win the flag all have the one big guy we cant stop.

Maybe LRT can get going again, still not sure he is the man to do it. But I reckon if Grundy/Richards/LRT/Johnson or whatever combo is in the team plays and had a big main defender with them they would all be that much better.

We dont seem to ever target key defenders in the draft, rather convert forwards.

I still think LRT used to do a fantastic job on the big guys he wasnt pretty to watch but who cares.

I would agree with that, I also thought him and Grundy worked well together, but then LRTs body let him down last year

my best 22 as it stands today:

FB: Smith, Richards, Johnson
HB: Shaw, Grundy, Mattner
C: Parker, Kennedy, Hannebury
HF: Rohan, Goodes, O'Keefe
FF: McGlynn, Reid, Moore
R: Mumford, Bolton, Jack
B: LRT, McVeigh, Bird
Sub Jetta

On the bubble:

Eski - I've left him out because he has to prove he's back from his latest LARS reco. He has to force his way into the back 6 - he doesn't get a bench spot on my team because he's purely a running defender ( ie not flexible enough). Shaw, Mattner and Smith are all better defenders, although none can compare to Eski when it comes to creating off half-back (Mattner and Shaw are incorrigible ball-butcherers to be sure).

Walsh - needs one good preseason game to convince me to put him at FF. I'm hoping to see it first hand this Saturday night. O'Keefe gets dropped until his knee gets better, then Bulldog.

Pyke - Close call between him and LRT. LRT just has greater flexibility and we may need him as a tall defender occassionally if Ted and Reg get monstered. But I like Mike Pyke as a 2nd Ruckman/3rd tall forward.

Armstrong - looks like a player to me, but is yet to prove himself and may have to wait for a spot to open up to get his chance.

Morton - not sold on this guy. Does the near impossible, then fluffs the mundane.

TDL - would love to see him force his way into the team, just cant see how its going to happen. Kicking bags in the ressies wont necessarily get it done.

White - behind Walsh/LRT/Pyke now. Still has bags of potential. When will the light go on?

Spangher - has the job in front of him to get his spot back once he gets fit.

Meredith - needs to take a page out of Parker or Johnson's book and get some hunger from somewhere.

Seaby - needs Mumford to get rubbed out or injured to get a game.

Everitt - depth player at best.

Lamb, Mitchell, Lockyer - hope to see them in the 1sts at some point.

Walsh playing one decent preseason game along with his one kick one handball last week does not make him an AFL key position forward.Ross Lyon is an egotistical ignorant pr*** but he is obviously one of the best coaches in the game and he wouldnt play Walsh in a fit.Saints supporters squeeled like stuffed pigs about it but Lyon new he wasnt up to it and from what i witnessed last week he still isn't.White is a great disappointment and needs to pull his finger out of his rrrs otherwise he is on the way out but he has played Senior footy and has shown glimpses of form that get you thinking he could become a more than handy KPP while Walsh has never played a Senior game and it looks like there needs to be a great deal of improvement if he is ever to debut. He looked like a rabbit in the headlights last week and his general awareness of what was going on around him and his ability to put himself in a position to take posession was apalling. To think some had him in their best 22 earlier in this thread is mind boggling.I hope for his sake and the clubs he does improve and becomes a player but at the moment imo he is miles away.

If he doesn't improve his goal kicking, that probably where he will end up.

It's unusual cause when he was drafted kicking was actually seen as one of his strengths... his main issues were his consistency and his ability to find the ball...

I wonder if it's just some sort of mental issue, Maybe it's just pressure...

His marking, or at least the way he marks the ball, would see him wasted in defense IMO.

He is not a bad kick from further out because he kicks through the ball due to requiring to for distance.
When he is closer to goal he stabs at the ball a bit more.
It will improve with time.

Worst case scenario is his close to goal kicking does not improve and he plays CHF further up the ground, seeing him get shots at goal from 40+ metres.

Either way, we have a potential elite player on our hands.

I maintain Reid's field kicking is quite strong. Doesn't seem to waste the ball much and hits targets. It's just his goal kicking is such a huge step down in terms of consistency and style. His field kicking is pretty fluid but then he seems to be very rigid when he kicks for goal.

Geez, this is an unnecessarily vitriolic shot at a bloke (Walsh) who's played, what, 30-40 minutes of preseason piss-and-giggle football. A lot of players at a lot of clubs, some of them established stars, have looked pretty ordinary so far in the footy I've watched in the Nab Cup, which has been most of it.

Decorum is dead DG.

This is the digital age, in days gone by roughly Rnd 6 was the sign of a player or teams title. Now it's NOB cup - for slaying of Swans.

At least the Ducks have till March 17, before the cull calls.

2 tings for mine 1. He needs to drop it straight, get rid of that kink in his drop. 2. He will be fitter and stronger this year, so will not be blowing as hard while lining up. I expect an improvement, and remember people said similar thing about Buddy and Reiwoldt.

Would anyone disagree in bringing Moore back into the Best 22? Unfortunately McGlynn isn't bringing the forward 50 pressure (really don't know what has happened) that I know Bulldog has, yes pace may be an issue, but I think we need a tough, nuggety defensive forward right now which Moore can fill who can mark the footy and make tackles. We should at least give him one last chance to prove he is still worthy of playing in seniors.

Yes he is. It's the one thing he's doing consistently well right now. With Rohan gone, McGlynn's tackling and above all else, pace is needed.

And I don't think Moore is going to provide any greater pressure than McGlynn. Just not quick enough.

Sorry I disagree, Benny has lost his will to attack the footy, needs to be dropped.

I disagree with that very very much. Just because he doesn't go in head first it doesn't mean he doesn't attack the ball.
