Hardwick Blanck DGB
Sicily Frost Jiath
Amon Ward Magginness
Breust Kosi Wingard
CMac Lewis Moore

Reeves Newcombe Worpel

Day, Morrison, Scrimshaw, Nash, Meek

Bench players not there due to likelihood of being fringe players but more as they offer versatility to play around the ground more. Wingard and Moore would optimally provide midfield rotations as would Day.

Look on the bright side here… MacDonald, Day, Stephens and Long are all set to spend significant time playing in the midfield in 2023. I really hope we get to see Day in the midfield next year. He’s too talented of a player to just leave in defence.

This is what I see as our current squad of 30:

FB: Hardwick, Blanck, Frost
HB: Day, Sicily, Jiath
C: Amon, Worpel, Maginness
HF: Moore, Kosi, Wingard
FF: Breust, Lewis, Reeves
Foll: Meek, Newcombe, Nash

Int: Impey, Scrimshaw, Morrison, DGB, Ward, Macdonald, Brockman, Morris, Stephens, Bramble, Butler, Jeka

Out side of these guys we have
Lynch - who should get games in we get an injury to one of our rucks
Serong - who should get games if we get an injury to one of our KPF

Long, Seamus and Saunders would like these guys to put pressure on the top 30 along side our drafties.

Mine looks something like this:

Scrimshaw Blanck DGB
CJ Sis Dimma
Morrison Ward Amon
CMac Kosi Wingard
Bruest Lewis Butler

Reeves Newcombe Moore

Int: Day, Finn, Meek, Frost

Morris is emergency for small backs
Worpel, Nash emergency for mids
Lynch for ruck
Jeka for KP
Impey, Brockman and Serong up forward

We need a CHF, and some absolute class. We have depth for the level the team is at.

Edit: I have NFI about Stephens - does he push someone out, or is he depth?

Interchange Reeves Morrison Nash Impey Stephens

Depth
Back: Frost DGB
Mids: Bramble Butler Lynch (ruck/forward)
Forward: Long, Serong, Jeka (can go back), Ramsden,
Brockman

This doesn’t include pick 6 or 24 from this years draft. Pick 6 best available player. Pick 24 best available forward as need extra, heavily reliance on Lewis to play all games

Lets have a crack based on all available and 5 on bench.

Hardwick Blanck DGB
Jiath Sicily Scrimshaw
Day Worpel Amon
Wingard Kosi McDonald
Breust Lewis Moore
Reeves Newcombe Ward
Meek Stephens Butler Morrison Pick 6 (Clarke, Humphrey, Mackenzie)

Depth:
Back: Frost, Jekka (Tall) Morris, Impey, Ohara (Small)
Mid: Finn, Nash, Bramble, Long, Lynch (Ruck)
Forward: Brockman, S. Mitchell, Saunders (Small), Serong, Ramsden (Tall)

Pick 24 and other ND and Rookie selections needed to finalise the squad

Hardwick Blanck Frost*
CJ Sicily Day
Morrison Ward Amon
Wingard Kosi Scrim
McDonald Lewis Bruest
Reeves Newcombe Moore
Interchange Meek Worps Nash Finn (Stephens/Pick 6)

Get Scrim up forward or on the wing. Great hands, booming kick. We have enough interceptors down back.
*DGB, Frost, Blanck around a similar level of output currently. They could play around 15 games each unless Blanck/DGB come on or Frost drops off. Frost is not a forward, and we don’t need a third tall if we play two rucks.

Round 1:

FB: Hardwick | Blanck | DGB
HB: Scrimshaw | Sicily | CJ

C: Amon | Maginess | Morrison
F: Reeves | Day | Newcombe

HF: Moore | Lewis | MacDonald
FF: Bruest | Meek | Wingard

Int: Ward | Brockman | Stephens | Morris | Frost

Emg: Nash | Worpel | Butler | Kozi

Bold for absolute locks for the position.
Italics for players that should play, but might be thrown around the ground position-wise
Underlined for a potential leadership group/ Captain and Vice Captains. Sicily + Moore and Bruest for mine.

I'd rather play Stephens than Worpel, at least until Worps proves himself. Remember, he was hard dropped and spent a few weeks going alright at VFL before succumbing to injury after being included as a late-in. Stephens has a bit more composure and some wicked-fast hands. Will be competing against Nash, Worpel, Long, and Maginess for our premier crash-and-bash mid.

Maginess is starting next year. You don't let a kid who placed 8th in the PCM (ahead of absolute locks Morrison and Scrimshaw) in limited games waste away on the bench. Throw him into the guts, let him play as a big-bodied mid, and add some grunt back into our midfield. He's a good tagger and working to become a net positive as a stoppage option himself, and with how last year went having a dedicated guy to run with Neale, Clarry, Macrae, and Walsh will cut a lot of good midfielders off at the source. Swing him off half-forward with Moore depending on the match-up.

We've never been strangers to a ruck at full forward, and while it's not ideal I'd rather have Meek there than Kosi at CHF, at least to start the season off.

Morris is a massive piece for our backline, if we're playing well deep he lets Hardwick push up the ground and influence the game forward of center.

Day for the midfield. Just do it, lock him in a gym with core and leg specialists and get his strength up to the point where he can stay standing in tackles for that extra half-second to shoot a handpass out. Rotate him and Amon on a wing, Karl seems to want some inside action.

Best Case R23:

FB: Hardwick | Blanck | Morris
HB: Sicily | DGB | Scrimshaw

C: Amon | Maginess | Morrison
F: Meek | Day | Newcombe

HF: Moore | Ramsden | MacDonald
FF: Butler | Lewis | Brockman

Int: Jiath | Wingard | Reeves | Ward | Stephens

Absolute best-case for the end of the year in my eye.

Back seven is locked in for the next 5 years.

Midfield has youth and talent coursing through it, with draft picks and current rookies all fighting each other for spots.

Forward line is all young guys cementing their spots, with the hopeful emergence of Ramsden; Butler, CMac, and Brockman all regular fixtures; and Moore and Lewis directing our goal-kicking.

Meek inheriting the earth and becoming a Witts/Early Goldy/Shrek level ruck with some exposure. Reeves running through and popping up in the forward line for some big grabs.

Tough drops, tough benching, tough competition on all lines. This is what we want, make players fight for spots and have our fringe guys fight so hard other clubs are willing to give us actual currency when they leave.

Nobody will be expecting success early in the year, its time for Sam to get the players in the positions where they are going to be long term.
Short term pain for long term gain:

Give Ramsden game time early in the season to see what he can do and put pressure on Kosi to earn his spot.
Let Scrimmers play up forward again and use his marking skills - the Gunston role is his.
Brockman starts in the forward pocket if he is fit.
Same with Morris in defence.
Stick Day in the middle and let him direct the attacking play - if we are switching across the field it is him who we want receiving the ball.
Give Worps a good run at it early in the season - he has direct competition from Stephens for his spot, but this time he starts as the no1 option with TOM gone. He needs to earn it in the long term, but I have faith.

By the end of the year i'm hoping we see something like this.

FB: Hardwick | Blanck | Morris
HB: Sicily (c) | DGB | Jiath

C: Amon | Day| Morrison
F: Reeves | Ward | Newcombe

HF: Moore | Ramsden | Scrimshaw
FF: Wingard | Lewis | Brockman

Int: Breust | Meek | Worpel | Maginness | Stephens | Butler | Impey | CMac | Nash | Bramble | Kosi | Frost

Frost is excellent depth, but if he is best 22 in the later parts of next year our development is not progressing as we would hope.

Haven't been this keen for a while, so keen for the pre season competitiveness from the lads, group as tight as ever and fighting it out for spots, ready to make 2023 a fun one.

Sicily | Blanck | DGB
Jiath | Jeka | Hardwick
Amon | Ward | Day
Wingard | Lewis | CMac
Breust | Kosi | Moore
Reeves | Newcombe | Worpel

Interchange (from): Meek, Stephens, Maginess, Scrimshaw, Frost, Impey, Bramble, Morris, Morrison, Nash, Brockman, Serong, Butler, pick 6, pick 24

* we play our back tall combo of Blanck, Jeka and DGB from the very beginning - get them to gel together and, if they don’t, trial something else

* Meek and Stephens will surprise a lot of people and be in the starting 22 early on

* it’s genuinely difficult to predict our starting 22 for next year, and I didn’t realise this until I started writing out the team - we have lots of depth IMO, and all the players I have listed on the interchange can mount a serious case for being in the starting 18! We also still have Long and Ramsden developing in the VFL. It’s bloody exciting! 🤩

* we are developing a great list - this year’s draft and next year’s trade/FA/draft period are crucial and will hopefully be the final pieces of the puzzle

Depth will be tested if we have a bad run with injuries- at least it will give the young players a good crack at it…

B Hardwick Blanck DGB
HB Jiath Sicily Day
C Amon Worpel Morrison
HF Moore Kosi MacDonald
F Bruest Lewis Wingard
R Reeves Newcombe Ward
Int Lynch Scrimshaw Stephens Finn
Emer Nash Impey Frost Meek

Next in line: Brockman, Bramble, Butler, Jeka, Long, Morris, Serong, Ramsden, Pick 7, Pick 25

More VFL time: Seamus, Saunders

Like to see Kosi get a good chance to be the 2nd key forward- still think he could be our version of a Jack Riewoldt type- crash the packs and create space for Lewis to operate… if he can’t do it look for another key forward in the draft next season…

Hope so. He was woeful at times this year but I think that was because he was rushed back.

With Morris looking to hold down a spot in defence, don’t be surprised if Impey plays as a small forward when he returns next year. He was quite good in that role and the forward-line seemed to function a lot better when he was moved down there.
