1996 North side.

C'mon mate, who are you kidding?

Honestly, looking at the sides chosen in this thread (and they are some phenomenal sides), it strikes me that there just aren't the quantity of superstars there have been in the past.

I just personally don't see anyone playing currently who in 10 years will be seen as superstars past aside from Judd and Ablett.

Surely not...

Merv Neagle was a great player. In the top couple of centremen of his time and I guess we're all entitled to put in our personal favorites. I slotted in Neale Daniher because his 1981 season as a 19 year old left an indelible mark on my memory.

Would be very exciting to see this team running around!

FROM 1980

A squad of 44.

Team chosen on versatility and balance. Hence Salmon's ruck career at Hawthorn combined with forward potency put him ahead of a Cox or Sandi. This team is continually evolving with Goddard my latest addition ousting Doull who I only ever saw at the tail-end of his career.

Wanganeen (Ess/Port) ~ Silvagni (Carl) ~ Fletcher (Ess)
McLeod (Adel) ~Jakovich (WC) ~ Goddard (StK)
Matera (WC) ~ Williams (Gee/Syd/Carl) ~ Voss (Lions)
Hird (Ess) ~ Carey (Nth) ~ Ablett Sr (Gee)
Bartlett (Rich) ~ Lockett (StK/Syd) ~ Matthews (Haw)
S Madden (Ess) ~ Judd (WC/Carl) ~ Ablett Jr (Gee)

Goodes (Syd) ~ Salmon (Ess/Haw) ~ Buckley (Coll)
Roos (Lions/Syd)

Defensive reserves: Scarlett (Gee), Archer (Nth), C. Johnson (Lions),
Doull (Carl), T Daniher (Ess), Hodge (Haw), Glendinning (Nth/WC)
Midfield reserves: Cousins (WC), T Watson (Ess), Ricciuto (Adel),
R. Harvey (StK), Koutoufides (Carl), Flower (Melb), D. Jarman (Haw/Adel)
Ruck reserve: Cox (WC)
Forward reserves: Daicos (Coll), Riewoldt (StK), Brereton (Haw),
Dunstall (Haw), Pavlich (Freo), Blight (Nth), Quinlan (Lions)

Really hard to leave out quality like C Grant, Hayes, G Wilson, Schimma, Hawkins, Grieg, Tuck, Platten, Kernahan, Tredders, Aker, Black, Chappy, Sandiands, J Brown, Lloyd... the list goes on. And yep, there is an essendon bias but that's just my perspective and I could easily argue all my Bombers here. A lot would probs leave Fletch and Salmon out but I think they balance this side well.

Probably way off the mark, but a lot of the 90's players I only vaguely remember (not from replays but from at the time).

Now for a team of my favourite players (mid 90's onwards):

B: J Saddington - C Bolton - N Brown
HB: A Toovey - J Clement - L Hodge
C: T Lockyer - B Kirk - R Harvey
HF: J Hird - M Richardson - P Kelly
F: A Didak - T Lockett - N Brown

My Best 22:

Struth you rate Dunkley highly! I'd rate him in the best half dozen full backs in my time but I think even his family would struggle to fit him in here (is that you Mrs Dunkley?). Fully respect your opinion but was taken aback by this one. Thought Hudghton was better and they were of similar ilk.

I have a soft spot for the Swans, but I always felt he was a very underrated Full Back.

Hudghton was a superb full back in his own right too.

As I said I do respect your opinion but you have to admit it's a left-field selection. His awkward kicking sticks in my mind as much as his ability to spoil a mark. Did like Dunks though.

No problem, it is a left field selection, but its one I feel justified in. Doesn't mean I expect everyone else to.

I actually looked at that team and considered bring Akermanis in for him for a little bit of flexibility.

In fact, the team might be a bit limited with both Silvagni and Dunkley in the backline. A player like Dunkley/Hudghton/Prestigiacomo, negating type might not actually fit too well with the structures.

It's more than a fair point that you raised. :) I'm surprised there weren't more flaws in my team tbh because like I said my memory of the 90's is distorted at best. I saw a lot of West Coast, Freo, Sydney and Collingwood but not so much of other clubs growing up.
