have a look at 2001/2001 there is a fast attaking style of play with no room for the kind of crap that welsh brings to the side, the team needs to get rid of these sorts of players if they want to push for finals this year

Im amazed Welsh's abilities are still being brought into question. He touches the ball more often than not as a backman, helps keep the ball moving and more importantly in possession, can take a great overhead mark and can play above his height. Opinions aside, the proof below further illustrates his important to our team's structure in the way is ball is moved out of defence...

Why do some of you think Kepler will play wing??? His skills aren't good enough and his pace is nothing special. We have plenty of guys who are capable of playing on the wing such as dyson, winderlich, lovett, houli and maybe even m.j or welshy.

Kepler will not be playing wing this year. He will play in defence on the dud forward or won't play at all. Sheeds is fed up giving him opportunities when he doesn't really deserve it.

If you recall, Barnes came back to us as our number 1 ruckman. Who do you think was out deep in the wings linking up for our potent direct style of play back then?? Didnt have great pace or stamina either, yet the move proved successful and exposed many ruckman who just couldnt follow him for 120 mins. I wouldnt argue if Bradley was used in this fashion...he would appear to have more pace than Barnes, certainly the stamina...even his height is greater. Would be a worthwhile and fruitful experiment I might add.

As we improve as a side, as we have more targets across CHF, as we produce more midfielders who are able to read the play and generate space, having a bloke who can 'win the ball' comes more and more important.

It wasn't Andrew Welsh's fault we were poor last season, he did his job for the most part.

Burn that paragraph in your mind folks. As usaul,longy has spelt it out in black& white. He might have an attitude sometimes that is a little blunt and a bit too realistic for some, but he see's thru the crap excuses.

Welsh wins the ball (thats the name of the game isn't it?) and gives it off to other Bombers,fairly often. He is not the problem,others need to lift their game more to highlight the importance of gutsy players like Andrew.

Wow you are giving it to Welsh about kicking and then you say we should have kept one of our turnover kings of the previous few seasons

Just on Welsh he does have his flaws. I think his long kicking ability and vision futher up the ground leads him to miss opertunities further up the ground at times but the problem isnt entirely his fault. If the midfield and half forwards dont work hard enough and present options then it is hard to go forward so being one of the link men he has to kick sideways or backwards. Not much point going up the ground if the ball is going to come straight back (as McPhee and Solly found out on numerous occasions).

But what other kind of answer were you expecting to such a question?

In regards to Welsh. I really wish he'd become more dangerous with his disposal, I don't think opposition teams worry when he receives the ball. And I worry that his pace limits the number of opponents he can be effective against. But he's in my 22, I like Slattery, Nash, and even Cole has looked okay this preseason but it would be a big step to replace Welsh with them. Will be an interesting year though if a few of these kids do step up and really put pressure on a few.

He's not really required to out run his opponents. His effectiveness is to provide a low risk passage out of our back 50 whether it be by hand or foot...hence the stats that have been brought up yesterday to support this.

He'd want to be able to keep pace with his opponents, it'll make it easier to stop them. He's generally reliable in this capacity but I have nightmares of how badly Didak smashed Welsh because he simply coudn't keep up and the league is getting quicker each year. The stats say he got a lot of the ball yes, and was given a lot of the ball - I'm sure I can remember that without the stats but in the modern game, let's face it, posession tallies for certain roles have become near meaningless as a guide to how well someone has played. I'm just asking for him to be more dangerous, I'm not asking for him to be replaced - sometimes I worry that his first instinct isn't to go forward and create.

I simply mean that, like his fellow backline compatriots in Fletcher, McPhee (when in full flight anyway) or even McVeigh (though he doesn't find as much of the ball), I want the opponents to worry about what mischief he's about to create when he gets the ball at half back. They also help get us out of trouble, but are also very dangerous because they can go forwards to telling effect.
