I think what's interesting about the list is how few clubs really have a settled forward line up with the same guy playing as the 2nd key forward week in week out.

If I had to pick a 'best 2nd key forward' I'd be going with Patton, followed closely by Waite. Waite hasn't gotten out on the park enough but he's been pretty good when he has.

I'd say Hooker's stats would surprise a lot of people. He's actually been really handy up forward this year. Going at 2 goals a game and leading the pack of these 2nd key forwards in terms of contested marking.

Wouldn't Jamie Elliott qualify as being a 'key forward' for Collingwood more so than Ben Reid, who has played about 4 games in the forward line?

Fasolo & Elliott lead our goal kicking with 28 each with Moore back on 21. Both Fasolo and Elliott predominantly play as lead up forwards, they're certainly not crumbers. Elliott in particular is very strong in the air. I don't see how they don't qualify in this list.

See the list in the OP, what exactly are your expecting from the second key forward? He consistently gets 40+ goals a year which is already amongst the top echelon in the league for that role.

Some people have unrealistic expectations of what the 2nd key forward is supposed to provide in the modern day AFL.
The 2nd forward has long been the whipping boy of fans.

Not a criticism, just an observation about how Hawthorn has used its players traditionally seen as key forwards. I've always understood the second key forward to be a positional/strategic thing. Who is the marking forward that gets the second most amount of traffic directed through them i50? The closest has been Roughead but even he is 33rd in the league for average marks inside 50 (your example of Daniher is 11th, the highest at Essendon and the forward that has the most traffic directed through them). The next highest for Hawthorn is O'Brien at 80th. Schoenmakers is 84th and Gunston isn't in the top 100. Obviously that isn't an issue of talent but of positional usage.
Clarko's strategy has certainly changed from 2008 when it was all about the 'Two Towers'.

Jack Darling 2012/13 is what I'd hope for in 2017. 53 goals in the absence of Kennedy then back to 42 the following year. Consistently getting 40ish goals is good, but that's really his level whether a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or otherwise forward.

2 x 4, 1 x 3, 10 x 2, 1 x 1, 2 x 0 goals this year. Been 47 games since a bag of 5, which he's done 6 times in 144 games.

Kennedy went out for 5 games and Darling went 0, 2, 0, 3, 4. You'd love to see him stand up and say 'I'm the man, now' and kick a big bag but he just doesn't. Unfortunately in terms of impact he's more Josh Hill than Josh Kennedy.
the suns game is the only game you can excuse for a bad game as he was nearly on a flight back to perth for the birth of his child. Cats game he played a KPF's game without really dominating the scoreboard. Dogs game he was B.O.G and Port game he was probably our best but in both those game the ball barely went in our forwardline in the last qt (in case of port last half). Port game was disappointing for me as Port had no answer for him and if we didn't run out of legs in the last half , he would have most likely had 6 or more goals.

Yes the Richmond forward line is still winning matches fairly well. Having a 2nd key tall isn't always necessary.
It's winning through weight of numbers more than anything. They have really high pressure and almost force the opposition into submission. The time taken is generally irrelevant because it's time the opposition loses as well. At least, it's irrelevant until you need 5 goals in short time to get back into the contest.

Its because you need to be more of a role player in that position and hence take a lot out of your game to serve the number one forward. JD does a lot off the ball that includes creating space for kennedy to lead into and enables that JK doesn't get 2-3 players on him.

He's missed a few games.

Had a quick look and he averages more goals a game (2.2) than Darling (2.0)

Edit: Scorpus covered it.
I was surprised because he looks effective every tine I see him play. Maybe it's partly I dont see every game, and partly you guys use muliple targets inside 50 and it gets shared around.

Jenkins can be a funny one. It seems if he's not 100% right he turns to water but when he is on he can be a very handy forward. He takes time to work himself into form as well as we've seen with his ribs. Had a really good couple of weeks but then ate some dodgy ham and he's gone to water again!!!!

Good player though. Gets alot of undeserved crap thrown his way.

How about we make a team out of them all?

FB: Trengrove Hooker BReid
HB: McDonald Taylor Gunston
C: Waite Darling SReid
HF: Kersten Redpath Jenkins
FF: Schache Patton Wright
R: Nankervis Membury Curnow

I would actually love too see if something like this would work. Probably not but should take plenty of marks.

Interesting with Essendon and Adelaide is that small forwards Fantasia and Betts have kick more goals than what is classed as the second key forward of either of those teams
