Olmy

Weird as it seems (well, to those who know me anyway), I never bought the Sodastream album. I saw them live so many times, and many of their gigs were great, but their was a sameness about their music.

Just out of interest, are you going to the Punters Club for New Years? The Lucksmiths, Sleepy Township, and the Foots are playing.

1.Pegazus - Breaking the Chains (playing at Edwards Tavern, Prahran, Sat. 23rd Dec...BE THERE!!!!!!!!)
2.Iron Maiden - Brave New World
3.Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory
4.Hammerfall - Renegade
5.Gamma Ray - Blast From The Past

But best of all was actually a video...Manowar's "Hell On Earth Pt. 1". If you ain't got your balls strapped to your leg, THEY'RE GONNA GET BLOWN OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other bands play, Manowar KILL !!!!!!!!!

I cannot vote because I've never heard of any of the bands or albums you've already mentioned.

Is there any new Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Stooges, Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, Doors, Joplin, Cream, Yardbirds, Them, Spirit, King Crimson, Captain Beefheart or Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention material coming out?

I think it would be a bit hard for a lot of those people to put out new records, considering probably half of them at least are DEAD. But I do agree with you they were the best.
Cheers

Either they're all indie OZ bands or I'm completely outta touch these days.

Shinboner, if you have the time I would appreciate a critical appraisal of each on your list (genre and similarilities included) - cheers.

For me (jeez I used to LIVE at Punters Club... sigh...)

1. Kid A - RH
2. Play - Moby
3. Rachel Worth - Gobshite twins

Well considering I promised never to post on a non footy subject, I am a weak individual.

But I have to let you all see the "human" side to me.

1. Apollo Four Forty - Getting High on Your Own Supply

2. Moby - Play

3. Powderfinger - Odyssey Number Five.

Biggest Disappointment - Fatboy Slim's latest offering.

Okay Dutchy, here goes:

1. THE LAST MATCH - The Aislers Set (Slumberland Records)...fuzzy pop, Jesus and Mary Chain meets the Go-Go's and some 60s Phil Spector-ish noise thrown in for good measure. These guys are American.

2. THIS IS BEAUMONT - Beaumont (Siesta Records)...cocktails, the high life, lounge sounds of the English upper classes at Monaco, the stylish person's Dave Graney. "Aftershave" was my song of 2001. These guys are English.

3. ALL HANDS ON THE BAD ONE - Sleater-Kinney (K Records...or was it Kill Rock Stars? Can't remember which)....ha! and Korn think they're tough boys. The S-L gals would chew them up and spit 'em out with just one minute of their punk fury. Did I mention that Carrie Brownstein is a babe? These gals are Americans.

4. HYACINTHS AND THISTLES - The Sixths (Merge Records?)....another Stephin Merrit project where he writes the songs and other people (like Bob Mould, Sarah Cracknell, Momus, and Clare Grogan!) sing 'em. Very synth-sounding, very pristine, and as always, brilliant lyrics from Merritt (puts Morrissey's best in the shade). Merritt is an American, his singers come from all around the world.

5. FOLD YOUR HANDS CHILD, YOU WALK LIKE A PEASANT - Belle and Sebastian (Jeepster). You live in England, you should already be sick of them. They're Scottish.

6. TORCH - True Love Always (Teenbeat). Fast paced, bass driven, stripped down, pop tunes with bossanova and jazz flavours. More Americans.

7. THE UNION THEMES - Lois Maffeo & Brendan Canty (Kill Rock Stars). Country-tinged 70s US West Coast sounds with Lois Maffeo's amazing voice and bitter-sweet lyrics. And some more Americans here too.

8. MONOMANIA - The Adventures In Stereo (Bobsled). Sounds like every 60s girlie soul group...y'know the kind of thing, Spector, Motown, Northern Soul....but updated with 90s production values. It's a shock to hear an AIS tune that lasts for more than 2 minutes though. These people are from Scotland.

9. THE FRIENDS OF RACHEL WORTH - The Go-Betweens (???)...you should know this one.

10. IN TECHNICOLOR - The Shermans (Shelflife) Swedish jangly pop...musically it's pretty inoffensive, but the girl has a great voice and I wouldn't want to be on the end of her ire.

Do I get my rock critic level one badge now?

Thanks Shinner

Actually knew a few of those and was just being thick. Are two of the Sleater Kinney girls on the Gobi's album playing drums and bass?

Thanks for the tape option but I don't have a tape player (!) Minidisc yes, CD yes - tape no. Love phil spector sound, love the high lounge scene sound - all feels pretty good to me... but just confirms to me that at 31 I am officially past my music-centric best (love Bob Mould/ Sugar/ Husker Du BTW).

HAve just got a copy of Fatboy slims new CD so I'll post an opinion soon....

All the best
Dutchy

PS. Other fave tune of 2000 was of course "they all try their best, but they can't get in... etc" on very high rotation...

Sandie,

Yes, I know a lot of these people/band members are dead, but that does not stop the release of previously unreleased material, or the surprise discovery of unknown material, which can be some gems mixed in with some jamming

Dutchie

Janet Weiss who bangs the drums on the GBs album also does so for S-K. And I think the other two S-K gals also make appearances on Rachel Worth.

The track that Bob Mould sings on the Sixths album, well....if you didn't know who was singing it, Bob Mould would have been one of your last guesses. Also singing on the 6ths record are Melanie (80s equivalent of Britney!), Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy), Gary Numan, and Marc Almond....plus a few others that are even more (criminally) obscure to the general public.

(hell i still live in the eighties music wise, sad but true)

Clare Grogan you say Shinners? Whos going to be Gregorys Girl then?......

I've only really listened to one album this year,

Radiohead KidA (of course) - just how good are this band ?

For a bit of light relief I also recommend Reflektor by Killing Heidi - nice Aussie-style pop music with these guys, I know it was actually a late 99 release but somehow these songs go just as well this summer as they did last.

cheers

Choice selections from 2000:

Grand Theft Audio - RESIN DOGS
Since I Left You - AVALANCHES
Kia A - Radiohead

I'm also still transfixed by all of Portishead's offerings. Dummy (1994), Portishead (self titled 1997) and Roseland NYC (1998)

BSA, Radiohead will be releasing a new CD early next year - maybe in March.
