it's rubbish. Talk to any techie and they'll tell you it's rubbish. Particulalrly their latest release. Sloooooow. $70 for a dog.

Every tech will tell you something different. Personally I'm a big fan of NOD32, have been using it for a long time and it works great. Cant go wrong with most of them. Even MSE is quite a decent anti-virus for free.

Do you have an IT degree champ?
Do you work in the IT industry champ?
Do you think malware is the only security threat to computers?
Do you not think a movie could be a corrupted file?

Windows security. Bwahahahaha hahahaha

Yes, yes....

What a flog you are, I didn't reply immediately so I'm hiding from you. Perhaps there's a few more important things in my life than you and you're feeble understanding of computers.

Oh I downloaded Avatar.exe and it gave me a virus. I did say "not being an idiot" as being one of the security measures, as well as the in-built protections of the latest Windows and the applications it uses.

WMA files did have a serious flaw in that they would have embedded scripts which executed automatically, thank god they did something about that and quickly when it became obvious what a hole that was.

Can you tell me how a corrupted media file would change something on your computer? It would have to exploit a security hole in the media player which is not going to be caught by your AV scanner.

I'm not the only one to voice the opinion that an informed user doesn't need a AV suite of the variety discussed here.

Bzzzzt. Wrong. Most techs will tell you Symantec, Trend, and McAfee suck bawlls.

They all do the same job as the others, it is true however that 2 of the 3 you mentioned do tend to resource hog. But really its not noticeable unless you're running some ancient computer. And the big positive with them is the ease of use is great for inexperienced people. Personally I wouldn't touch Symantec products, but there is a reason they are popular.

I used Norton once. Relatively new system. Couldn't use it. Took 15 minutes to open word, slowed my internet down to less than a crawl. And I know many others with the same experience.

Avast, Nod32, Vipre, Avira > all those ones

Marketing and nothing else. They do OEM deals with pc and notebook vendors. You buy a pc/nb with Norton preloaded. In 3 months time it expires and a pop up comes up and asks them to renew. Most people don't know anything about security and/or just find it easier to renew then and there.

Great marketing. Amazingly inferior product.

You can find negative reviews on EVERY anti virus software out there.

Ain't that the truth! Highly competitive market which prompts strong comments for and against every product.

While you will frequently hear that "Norton/Symantec is a resource hog", I've had few issues with Norton Internet Security and fewer again with Symantec Endpoint Protection. Both reputable products comprising firewall as well as anti-virus, though ideally you'd connect via a hardware firewall (router) as well. My employer uses Endpoint - it needs to be light on resources to run on relatively low-powered business machines. Can be installed client-only on a standalone PC and doesn't require a subscription, unlike NIS.

Norton 360 on the other hand I found frustrating for various reasons, but particularly its lack of customisable options, to the point of uninstalling it three months after purchasing on the strength of favourable reviews.
