All of these designs are worse than the Holocaust

These are bad

AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD!
Could you stop trying to draw attention to yourself. Please?

This isn't TLC, or whatever that board is called.

Three advantages of our current flag:

1) Simple/no intricate designs that can't be seen properly from a long way away
2) No more than three colours, all complimentary
3) Very effective symbolism

I would like any replacement flag to fit similar criteria.

In particular the symbolism of the current flag is really quite elegant for something designed by a 14 year old boy:
  • the UJ represents the historical origins of the colonies
  • the Commonwealth Star represents the coming together of those colonies as the states and territories
  • the Southern Cross represents the aspirations of the new nation, alluding to the four stars in Dante's Inferno that embodied the four cardinal virtues (justice, prudence, temperance and fortitude)
I'm not totally opposed to a new flag but I'd like the new one to be at least as well-constructed as the current one. You know, with a bit more thought than "hey an emu/kangaroo/piece of wattle would look really cool, let's chuck that on there". One of the things that makes the Canadian flag so great is that it's not just a nice design - the maple leaf actually has a symbolic meaning.

Too much going on in that first one and I'm not a fan of the colour scheme. Also I don't know why people complain about the current flag being exclusionary and representing only the British but then suggest one with only aboriginal colours.

I couldn't care if it was changed but I'd prefer something simple if it did. Here's my effort:

Agreed, even if it does look like we've just copied the Canadians.
With Brazilian colours.
That's the only problem I have with any proposed flag containing green and gold, I just automatically think Brazil, and therefore not unique.
Having said that, I don't mind that flag posted by Barry, best one so far.

What we need to do if Scotland becames independent is adopt the Union Jack as our own flag.
In decades time school children watching historical movies will think the Australia once ruled the waves and had an empire/

I think a lot of the options that are often put up are over-imbued with obvious symbolism - from the colours to the iconography.

They kind of become either turgid or looking like something from TAFE graphic assignment. Sort of reeking of insecurity with their bloated comms back-fill.

In my opinion, a flag, like any effective piece of communication, needs to be single-minded, focused. We can't be everything to everyone. Nor can we tell multiple stories.

I hate that we have the flag we do, mainly because we're still yoked to the UK, even if it's just a loose thing these days. But as a design, I kind of like it. Dunno why.

I've always liked the idea of the Southern Cross as a flag. Nothing to do with the Eureka Stockade, but more that these stars have shone over our land for thousands and thousands of years. No matter the people who were here, or are here now, they're our stars, stars that everyone can look up and see if they live here. And they can't be seen in ****ing England.

It's not uniquely Australian though, is it? Every country in the southern hemisphere can see it, even some in the Northern.

Why does it have to be? The rising sun isn't uniquely Japanese either. But it is on a flag.

Well, nobody else has the rising sun on their flag. A few other countries already have the southern cross (NZ, Brazil, anyone else?).

It doesn't bother me much though. I've never really understood what's wrong with just dropping the UJ from the canton and keeping the rest of the flag the same.

All you need to recognise the nations before the British were here, is a circular based with earth colours..

but before we can do that, we need to come to a general consensus that we need to change it and why..

The circle represents the wheel, they were unable to ever invent...
