Travel Best and Worst Airlines

I've flown RyanAir and some other one, plus a heap of those random little airlines from Europe and generally you're so tired from their 5am departures you don't give a shit.

Are ANA's staff jumpy as in, like, bit of turbulence... sudden panic? **** that.
As soon as the seatbelt light goes on they all rush around with furrowed brows, whereas Singapore they've all got the same serene look on their face all the time. On ANA they always give off the faint air that this whole flying business would be much better if everyone on the plane had the same expectations, i.e that they were all Japanese. Minor quibble though the rest is great, they have great ground service and the planes are always new and/or spotless.

Anyone ever flown scoot from Singapore to berlin?

I'm thinking of heading to Europe when the world cup soccer qtr finals/semi finals/final is on, and I can get to berlin on scoot from gold coast for like $900 return.

Plan once there I will go to whichever country is in the games and watch them on a big screen somewhere in a central plaza. Germany are likely to be a good chance so can head there straight up. And once there can go paris if france doing well, or Portugal, or Spain etc

(I don't want to go to Russia - need a visa for a start but mostly I want a cheap holiday, if flights are <$1000 that's a good start)

I don't think Germany really has those sort of plazas you get in Italian or Spanish towns?

It doesn't sound that cheap at all for a low cost airline. If you're flying for 20 hours plus you want some food on the plane, something to watch, a few beers... if you're paying 600 or so then I can get it but that's not that cheap really.

hmmm. everything else I have looked at for the dates I want are $1500 plus

re watching the games there - I was looking at websites like this (from 2010 mind you)

maybe I should just look into a visa for Russia and train it there from berlin
official sites look good

Usually fly either Qantas or Virgin domestically, both are pretty good. I enjoyed flying from Darwin with Air North, old fashioned hostie service and I found the Embraer more comfortable than the standard Boeing.
Flew home from Hobart with Jetstar. Unlike a normal airline couldn't book our luggage straight through to Townsville. Had to collect it from the baggage carousel in Sydney and check it onto the next flight ourselves.
Worst experience was with Ansett back in the late 90s. Flying from Coffs to Sydney, plane was supposed to leave at 6 PM - ended up leaving after midnight.
Went to France in 2013 on the Air Bus with Emirates. A pretty good experience for the most part, the plane on the Brisbane - Dubai leg was in a lot better nick than the one we got going from Dubai to Lyon.

Ansett was the equivalent if not superior to Qantas but back then there was not the anti collusion laws that we have now. Airfares between Perth and the East coast were in excess of $1000.
The "duopoly" they enjoyed with Qantas crushed Compass 1 & 2 and a couple of other airlines that tried to break this duopoly.
Ansett's demise resulted from many factors including -
Wages, they had staff on ridiculous wages, baggage handlers earning 80k plus back then.
Aircraft type - they bought every new plane that came out, result was a fleet of at least 8 different aircraft all requiring different maintenance, parts and flight crews.
They tried to diversify too broadly, moving too far from their core business.
I had no empathy for the staff when they went under, yet for some reason the government stepped in and compensated them. Was a freakin joke and an insult to every other Australian that had lost a job from their employer going under.
Agree
Very cosy company where generations of the same families were given jobs
I worked for the company that provided their employees with health insurance and we had a special section set up to assist employees when they went under
Breathtaking sense of entitlement for some reason

Just give yourself plenty of time because they'll probably be delayed

Scoot as a low cost carrier is an excellent airline. Fully owned subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.
Best thing about them is they're all wide bodied aircraft, 777's being replaced with 787's, which is shitloads better than the narrow bodied 737's and A320's most low cost carriers predominantly use.

This absolutely shits me; have been to Europe twice on Etihad and both times it was awesome leaving from Australia but got shuffled onto Alitalia and I think AirBerlin the time after... absolute ruse. I bought the wifi on both for 24 hours and it didn't carry over. The seats are rickety, the tables are loose, everything is a bit yellowed... it's an annoying part of these airlines but you generally sleep the second leg anyway so they get away with it.

Thai used Lufthansa which is a good airline so was great all the way. I was so ****ed after two months of drinking and walking 20 Ks a day in the sun I just slept so don't remember much. Same thing with Air New Zealand... as good to here as it was to Auckland.
