When it comes to our state leaders, it'll be an interesting comparison to see how they stack up against state/provincial leaders from the USA and Canada. Ditto comparing federal leaders.

Probably easier to do a comparison with Canada because of their similarity in federal structure and form of government. A couple of shockers- the governments of Bill Vander Zalm in British Columbia and Grant Devine in Saskatchewan, for instance, were single-handedly responsible for the deaths of their respective parties.

Just out of Curiosity Medulsala whats your opinion of Ray O'Conner? You've mentioned Brian Burke quite a bit but not him??
Dodgy too. Joh was hardly Robinson Crusoe. Different time and era (well until the 80's). Some of you blokes need to get off your high horse re him. He is just a convenient hate figure of the left. I have no doubts you could find some unsavoury stuff went on under the left's poster boy Don Dunstan.

BTW talking about Russ Hinze, what about Theophanous and his jail sentence? Does that make the govt of the day corrupt as well?

Steve Bracks is very similar to the very well respected Sir Rupe Hamer in that he is very caucious and slow to do things but in the end they get done.
Also he and Brumby are very tight with the state's finances.

I have got the dirt on Don Dunstan he was South Australian and he wore safari suits - he was also one of the most literate, intelligent and able premier/statesmen this Country ever had.

theophanous was/is a scumbag, as is that QLD labour MP whose name escapes me that used his power to molest teenage girls, as is anyone is a scumbag.

I hate paedophiles, and I hate rapists, which was basically what theophanous was, forcing people by some accounts to have sex with him, based on his power and influence, as well as taking bribes etc.

HOWEVER, Joh, and his government were endemically corrupt, and it took nearly 15 years to clean out the QLD police force.

THere are bad elements in the Vic, WA, NSW police, but hardly the problems that were in the QLD force.

sure the drug squad were corrupt, but they got taken down and they'll continue to get taken down because fundamentally I believe the VIC police are and have been less corrupted.

but JOH and the white shoe brigade he fostered were criminals and scum.

every govt has its batch of crims but Johs govt supported and encouraged it.

I was in Canberra for part of the Joh era, and the hate was not confined to the left. There was plenty of Lib's and even country party members who hated him.

As you earlier quoted in another thread:
Came back to haunt you? ;)

Your comments on Dunstan are nothing but simple allegations and there is no proof to the fact that Dunstan was involved in any of this rubbish with young boys.

I would base my vote on truths rather than made up stories and allegations.

the other thread was attempting to use quotes which were not taken in context

this is an opinion based thread

IMO I dont rate dustan and i gave you some of the reasons why so no it hasnt come back to haunt me,

I didnt mention his average state management but in future I wil try to keep it to things you can check out on the net !

You know Andrew Theophanous personally do you?.
I believe in the court system and I believe it gets it right most of the time, reading just this article

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/06/11/1022982845962.html?oneclick=true

while I believe many more politicians should be held accountable, I believe that the courts get it right, and as such he was convicted and is a scumbag.

The courts SHOULD have convicted Joh, except he got off because of a lack of screening in the jury, he was/is guilty and we know it.

the rest of the slime get off.

I feel its just as fair to call theophanous a scumbag as it is to call howard/blair/bush etc a scumbag or worse.

based on the articles re: his conviction he is a slimy slimy toad.

Stanley Melbourne Bruce has really got out of this lightly. Has to be the worst conservative PM.
I think it was defined as post WW2, maybe to save menzies in his first term when he agreed with Chamberlin to bow down to the Nazi's

I am going by the what the courts have found.

I believe that the courts get it right most of the time.

Did anyone think, including the families that hosted him that the tassie umpire was a paedophile? does anyone really know anyone well enough to say that?

Theophanous is without a doubt a very intelligent man.

however the telephone tapes played on ch9 were pretty damning evidence.

The NCA which got was actually seen as a labour oriented organisation by the libs, what did the NCA have to gain from bringing down theophanous?

I can't believe that they went to all that trouble and expense to get a minor politician.

The judicial system does make mistakes, and if he is acquited at some later stage, then I'll believe that he was an innocent man wronged, until then I must believe that the victorian and federal judicial system is mostly decent.

his wife's constant statements that is was entrapment, that theophanous was 'going along' to discover what was going on to expose the 'real crooks' later has a hollow and weak and basically unbelievable ring to it, and the justice system thought so also.

most of the folks in gaol are there because the deserve to be there in Australia, our legal system is pretty good, and far superior to that in the USA by example.

(that said our policy of mandatory detention for illegal immigrants is disgraceful, but that falls outside the ability of the judiciary to intervene as that is law of the land)

Best PM - dead heat between Keating and Whitlam!

Best Premier - John Caine
You have made a typo, you have nominated the worst PM and Premier.

(Also you may have confused John Cain with Laurie Kaine)

Tell us who you thought were the good ones.

Whitlam was a smart guy but a pathetic PM. Had a team of twits like Cairns, Connor, Cameron, Crean and Grassby.
