12th: Mark Waugh

Reserves:
Justin Langer
Dean Jones

Nathan Lyon

Merv chosen in the XI ahead of Gillespie, because Merv was my favourite player growing up. I also considered choosing Tim May ahead of Nathan Lyon, purely because he and Shane Warne usually bowled well in tandem.

is anyone now wanting to add warner to their squad ?

only haydos as more test tons and a better average as an opener than warner.

Good move getting the New South Welshman Gilchrist in there

Made a name for himself playing for us. No different to naming 2 West Aussies in the opposing side. Zippy Zoeher could come in the side for him and was no slouch

I said it was a good move. Lehmann would be in Vic's best of last 30 years too.

Most exciting/Best to watch side from players I've seen:

Gordon Greenidge
Virender Sehwag
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
Martin Crowe
Clive Lloyd
Brendan McCullum
Imran Khan
Wasim Akram
Curtly Ambrose
Abdul Qadir

12th Phil Tufnell

Paul Nobes too.
In SA's best also. Loved watching him smash it around!

Do you remember the Shield game when SA needed 400odd to win on the last day, and Boof and Nobes opened together?

I remember that. In Barry Gibbs' autobiography you can see the back of my head alongside a friend and his late brother in the snap of Siddons lifting the Shield. I'm the one with the bald patch clapping.

I was on the ground then. Took the day off from Uni to watch the last day. A friend of mine briefly had possession of a stump when everyone ran onto the ground.

Would’ve loved to have put in some of my favourites but they just don’t cut it against the above 17. Grew up loving watching Slater, Bichel, Blewett then later on Symonds, Miller and Lehmann. Just not enough spots for them.

How good would that field be though? You’d end up having to “hide” Waugh and Langer at Mid on and short leg to the quicks.

Taylor M (vc)
Hayden
Ponting
Smith
Chappell G
Border (c)
Gilchrist - very tempted to go Healy, the superior gloveman is almost always the right choice; but in this one case the extra batting counts
Warne
Lillee
Mc Dermott - I actually find the third fast bowling spot hard to fill, because the quality of the other two is so high and the next group is fairly even
Mc Grath

Langer
Hughes K - could he really be in the same squad as Chappell and Lillee though? much beter than his numbers say
Healy
Gillespie
Reid B - except for being a guaranteed injury
MacGill

Unlucky: Clarke M, Hussey, Cummins (might get there, but not yet), Alderman first in if touring England and could easily be the Reid replacement anyway
Given the era Gary Gilmore fit and firing would have to go close

Probably get howled down for this but statistically speaking, Stuart MaGil is a better spinner than Nathan Lyon.

Only reason you go with Lyon is the variation he would give you to the #1 man (Shane Warne).

Man I completely agree. McGill is the 2nd greatest legspinner of all time born in exactly the wrong era

Would have been fascinating if he was a few years older. What do you do with Warney when you already have an established gun international leg spinner.
