Yep absolutely valid points you raise and I wouldn't be against doing something like that either. But this is based on players who would come out with the backs to the wall and with a line up like that, you don't really need another batsman as they already bat to 8.

That said, this is really semantics, put Aussies in and it changes everything anyway. You would include all of Warne, Gilly, Ponting (most likely), Smith, McGrath and would heavily consider Hayden, Johnno, Harris and Cummins.

My point being that he averaged 27 for his career but it was built on 2 series in England where his bowling was perfectly suited. Aside from those 2 ashes series he averaged 35 for his career.

I find it odd that in a time frame that has included the likes of Gillespie and McDermott and even Hazlewood you would opt for alderman
