ponting or g chappell ?

only s waugh, border, hayden and m hussey average over 50 in test cricket.

ponting ave 52.50 (as it currently stands) over 156 tests including 39 tons.
g chappell ave 53.86 over 87 tests including including 24 tons.
*g chappell also played 17 unofficial tests and ave 63.48 including 6 tons.

ponting ave 43.62 in 370 odi's with 30 tons
g chappell ave 40.18 in 74 odi's with 3 tons (was best player in the world behind viv richards in the games infancy but never won a world cup)

1st class records:
ponting 261 matches, ave 55, 73 tons
g chappell 338 matches, ave 52, 80 tons (including unofficial tests)

Ponting and Chappell are very close. I rate Border as well due to who he scored his runs against.

hopefully his last test innings is one he can remember.

cant say much for Chappell as i never sore him but some people have said under pressure he wasnt as good as Ponting was.

Too close to call between Chappell and Ponting. Averages are similar because Chappell knew the right time to retire, but then Greg Chappell played in an era where there was a plethora of world class bowlers, especially the might of the West Indian pace quartet. The fact he continued to make runs in World Series Cricket speaks volumes for his ability as he batted against some of the all-time great bowlers on ordinary pitches.

If I had to choose, I would go Chappell for the above reason, but quite happy to hear arguments for Ponting. As for Border and Waugh, great players but really didn't set the world on fire in a 3 or 4 spot.
