McKenna kicked about 7 million goals that year and was 3 parts K.O'd by Tuddy(own team) pretty early on. In those days teams were happy for their spearhead to kick the vast majority of their score. Wasn't the only turning point but didn't help.

McKenna had already kicked 5 just before half time in the Grand Final....then Tuddy did what he did. Bob Rose left them both on for the majority of the second half (one concussed and the other with a badly corked hip/thigh) leaving two injured players on the ground meant Carlton played the majority of the second half playing 18 against 16. It was poor coaching by Bob Rose but in those days...It was par for the course.

Regardless of club supported, it was hard not to feel genuine empathy towards Bob Rose, a champion player, coach and human being.

To get so close three times yet fail, must have been so difficult to take and absorb. The last of those three times was the 70 GF, where the Pies seemingly had their hands on the cup at half-time yet fell at the final hurdle. It must have shattered Bob, yet there he was post game out on the field consoling his equally shattered players.

What happened to his son was also a very sad, personal tragedy.

Wally Carter
Yes Wallace Francis Carter can’t be discounted, coaching North to its first grand final in 51, then presiding over a golden era for Williamstown in the VFA in the 50s.

Revolutionary in his time Wally oversaw radical new fitness routines for footballers incorporating the ‘jog trot’ and upside down pedalling.

Also, at a time when 9 out of 10 doctors recommended smoking for your health he instituted a ban on smoking in the hour preceding a match. Though, as a trade off he also insisted his players smoke an extra 5 cigarettes in the hour after the game to get their nicotine levels back to normal.

This poster illustrates some of Wally’s best work.

Any love for Ross Lyon? So close on multiple occasions and he certainly knows how to organise a team on-field, players just know 'where they should be' in Ross Lyon coached sides.
Terry Wallace was so close in 97 to taking a team from 15th to a flag too, changed the culture at the Bulldogs.
Rodney Eade was a good nomination earlier.
