I thought you were bringing up hr_23 position, since I responded to hr_23 then you responded to my response to hr_23.

I even said Matthews was a great coach - I would categorise him as one because he took what was an obviously talented group (as evidenced by what they did in 96-97 and 99) and then took down an absolute juggernaut in 01, moreso than the fact that he rejuvenated them in 99. They were already there for him in 99.

Yes of course that takes some good coaching to get a side back up after a dismal year, no denying that, but he’s not the first and won’t be the last coach to come in and give a talented group a kick up the arse when they’ve fallen down the ladder. So that in itself doesn’t get him a whole lot of points as far as I’m concerned.

If I was giving an appraisal of Thompson who I think was a very good coach but not necessarily at the very top, it would be based around him putting together our team in the first place I guess, as much as anything

I also think the 3-peat which is so rare makes him the best coach of the 2000s. Now, if 2008 goes how it should have gone then it'd be a coin toss argument about who was the best coach of the 2000s.

i think Lethal was fantastic coach & hawthorn royalty so not throwing shade at him or his achievements
my personal opinion was that i think Bomber slightly shaded Lethal in the 00's in a flip of the coin call
maybe because i was was still fairly young during the Lions run but i remember them having most of the 3peat team before he took over
but its all personal opinion & a great chat

The 90s really was full of some absolute legends wasn't it?

Sheedy, Parkin, Malthouse, Pagan, Blight - these guys left an absolute mark on the game.

Coaches these days just don't have that same...gravitas?

Maybe it's the polo shirts?
