Welcome to tonight’s football match, which promises to be a classic in every sense of the word. In the red corner weighing in slightly more than last year with the absence of Steven May off-set by strong gains made by their coach Stew Eater Dew. With more Jacks than a deck of cards we have the Gold Coast Suns!!!!

In the Blue corner, with only slightly less Jacks than the Suns, but thanks to Gaffy more punch than a high school disco.. and more Hickey’s too. Weighing in as the heavyweight champion of the world. The West Coast!!!!! Eagles…

Key Questions
Ruck
With our floppy cox long gone, our ex Gold Coast ruck division of Hickey and (maybe) Brooksby will go up against the extremely hard two meter Peter. Will be an enthralling contest, the combination of two meter Peter to Jack to Swallow is going to be one to watch out for.
Coaching
Would the Gold Coast be better off right now if they stuck with West Coast champion Guy McKenna? That is the question?
Gold Coast had it tough in their early days. Trying to start a new team in a strong competition in a non AFL state in a non capital city. Add to that poor infrastructure and then factor in starting with only 8 guys with AFL experience on the list. It’s little wonder their first year was a hard one. With that in mind it’s worth noting that McKenna still has the best winning percentage for any of the coaches in the clubs history, even with that first year dragging his winning % down. It still remains that the last two years of McKenna’s reign remain the best two years of the clubs history. Most Wins, Best crowd attendances, Turning a profit and on an upward trend.
I believe the club buckled too early and have never reached the dizzy heights of 12thplace in the league again.
The Eagles on the other hand, well last year just proved that Simmo was useless without Pyke there to implement the game plan. On top of that this year we are without Sam Mitchell to motivate the troops. Don't know how Simmo will turn around our rabble.
Fitness
Gold Coast were able to go toe to toe with an improving Brisbane till early in the third quarter last week, while West Coast were able to go with Geelong until shortly after the initial bounce. I think this week will be a war of attrition, and luckily when we have attrition we have the best in the business in Chris Masten. Chris showed just how important he is to our team last week by covering the most distance on the ground, completely dominating guys like Gary Ablett, who just couldn’t run as far as often.
The need for Speed
As opposed to the need for Sheed, we will want to start moving a bit faster if we are hoping to get the goods over Gold Coast. I find that generally players hit contests at full speed more often when they have a bit of confidence and play slower when they’re not certain. They now record the top speeds of players, and last week the top 5 speedy players were all from Geelong. We need that to change.
Club songs
I’m hoping that we get to hear the team belt out the Eagles chant, complete with the new intro. While on the topic of club songs, Gold Coast should have used this one
Verdict
West Coast superior fitness will see them outlast Gold Coast, winning by around 5 goals, with the lead mainly being generated in the third quarter.
