It’s where the turnovers happen and how clean they are. If we lose a contest anywhere from about 40 metres out from our goal to 40 metres from theirs you can nearly pencil in a shot at goal to the opposition. We need to be either having a shot ourselves or for the ball to go out of play so we can reset. It’s alright sometimes because that’s footy and they sometimes get the better of you.. but not every time.. Reckon you could take half that 49 and nearly put it directly back into our score.. such was the nature of some of our turnovers.. A large majority end up being 12 point plays. There’s your 50-60 point margin.49 of Gold Coast's total of 57 points came as a result from West Coast turnovers.
Or another way, 14/17 of their scoring shots resulted directly from turnovers.
That is the issue that needs to be addressed.
Few things , We were rusty when dominating , could have had an 8 Goal 1st qtr instead kicked 5 points . 2nd qtr Darling woke up . 3 rd qtr Rusty again until Ryan's 2 brainfarts gave back to back goals after we led by 42 points 5 mins shy of 3/4 time , Jetta had 3 or 4 shocking turnovers when we were away so the rebound left us out of position . Other times we were away and the kicking player zigged at the precise time the intended reciever zagged , it looked bad and happened a fair few times .Along with Yeo taking 11 steps but that was running too far ???? Start of the 4th everything clicked for Gold Coast and they handpassed and run very clean and could have overrun us .Where did we come unstuck tonight?
Still don't think it's ganeplan, more intent, desire.
This is a very underrated zone or press breaker. All Dew did was park two spares in front of his back six after half time.
As a result we stopped using the corridor and fell into all too familiar trap of kicking long down the wing to outnumbered contests.
Conversely, it allowed Gold Coast to start using the corridor out of defence, which plays havoc with our own defensive setup.
With our midfield well on top the response should have been to get aggressive and make those spares accountable, effectively setting up a forward eight and ensuring that ownership of the corridor is maintained.
And that comes down to mindset from everyone. Coaches, players, all liable. Too comfortable with how things were tracking, thought the job was done, and didn’t feel the need to change anything or assert the dominance. Meanwhile Gold Coast decide to switch things up and it pays off big time. Need to be more clinical and dare I say it, arrogant.. Man those spares up like you say, even if it does cause an 8 man forward line, and force them to play to us, force them to keep finding different ways to get back into the game. You can afford to at least try these things with a 40 point lead.. especially when the alternative is blowing that lead regardless. Just somehow need to start treating every game like it’s a one goal margin either way for the entire game. All Dew did was park two spares in front of his back six after half time.
