Who do you think received the best concessions between the Crows and the Power with the entry of both sides in 1991 and 1997 respectively?

Personally I believe the Powers concessions were much harder. Particularly when you think a player back in the Crows days could say Im going home to live in Adelaide and the opposition teams had no choice but to deal with Adelaide. Darren Jarman, Tony Hall and Greg Anderson are prime examples of this.

Now that the Power is in we don't have this luxury. A player can still say I would like to go home to Adelaide but the other clubs can now ask for more as they can deal with two clubs therefore pushing up the asking price. By pushing up the price it is more likely that our clubs will refuse to pay the asking price so making the players stay interstate because no deal could be struck between the clubs.

I think Ports concessions should have been much better mainly because of this.

Would love to hear what you think?

As a Crows fan, I agree with you. we are finding it much harder to get the SA guys back now (why we are missing out on them when we have a rookie lists is beyond me) as the Melbourne clubs and agents are coming up with tougher deals each year.

I think we got the better deal when we first formed. However we could still only pick up to 8 ex-pat SA players in 1991 and the Vic clubs had plenty of lead time to sign up their stars. It was still slim pickings between 1990 and 1992. I think Greg Anderson came home under this rule, but we had to trade to get Jarman (I cant recall what we had to do to get Hall but he did buggerall)

The crows came into the AFL with a virtual state team, we came in with a future, and with vision.

Yes, we're heaps better than that other team. I don't care how long it takes to get a premiership, Asguardian, you're right, we've got a future and a vision. Thats the most important thing . Who cares that the Cows got two premierships in their first 10 years.

no question the crows got the better deal.

Even the fact that they could get uncrontracted players over 3 years was a boon.

Port had one year and therefore it was fairly easy for clubs to resign anyone who may be of interest before we came along.

The one advantage we did have was knowing we would be in 12 monthsin advance. I heard of a few (Wilson and Lade) come to mind, players who did not nominate for the draft knowing they would be picked up by Port inthe next year.

But overall....Crows by a mile.

Where you around in 1925 Pessimistic?. How do you know what the conditions of entry were. Plus back then it was a suburban comp and teams had zones to develop players in. So if it took those clubs a while to be successful its their fault. Today with the national comp the only way you can get players are through trades or the draft, so it's a completely different system. But if you want to go back to the zonning system, you will get no complaints from me.

Would have thought Port had better concessions but not by much. Port Adelaide had advantage of preparing their list with much more pre-warning well in advance of actually starting. Crows was virtually overnight so whilst you say they could attract back a Darren Jarman type what they did not have as good as Port was telling a few youngsters to not nominate for draft until we start off. Port tended to have a few guys like Josh Francou, Michael Wilson, Fabian Francis, Dickie, Mead and a few other stock piled away for when they were ready to start in AFL in mid 1990's or later as it turned out. They need to get some of these guys to agree with it but I suspect there were a few of them. It probably meant some of these guys started later in AFL than they would have. Crows would not have had that luxury. They just had an old guy like Chris McDermott hanging on for his twilight years to play AFL a few years.
Also should remember Port got back Wanganeen from Essendon in his prime straight away. I don't think a guy like Greg Anderson was anywhere near as good as him.
For mine they both got good concessions to start up with. Just slightly different circumstances. Port having young Tredrea, Dew, Burgoyne's, Eagleton, Lade and Roger James as essentially pre-draft selections would generally be seen as all top ten type draft picks. Not too different to what Gold Coast got to start up with in terms of start up talent. This is miles away from the dud deal Brisbane Bears got when they essentially got all the cast offs from other clubs. I'd probably say Port had slightly better concessions than Adelaide but the Crows start up was probably more exciting for the players themselves as they were true pioneers of SA based players having a team to play for in their home state. They brought back the likes of Jarman, Lindner and Hall fairly quickly in their prime. Port probably overall were more reliant on their youngsters developing together such as Tredrea, Dew and Burgoyne's which ultimately happened and add an older Byron Pickett and Hardwick to a maturing group and 2004 of 8 years to get a flag was a very good result.

Massive Bump. Bringing back Scottie before he changed him name to Black Diamond.
Should try and catch up for a game. Last time I went to a game with BD we won the flag. :D

You seem to be unaware of Adelaide's second-year morotorium on SA players that netted:

- Tony Modra
- Mark Ricciuto
- Sean Wellman (later traded for Darren Jarman)
- Chris Groom (later traded for Andrew McLeod)
- Anthony Ingerson (later traded for the pick that netted Kane Johnson)
- And they chose Mark Viska over Andrew McKay.

When you factor in that Wanganeen, Lyle, Bond, Brown, Hodges, Mead, Tredrea, Burgoyne, Francis and Wilson were former/current Port players anyway, our concessions were horrible.

In exchange of going through the draft, Adelaide had a moratorium over all players in the SANFL which meant they could add as many SA players as they wanted for three years. In addition to those named by tribey, I think Paul Rouvray, Seb Packer (coodabeen best of the lot had he not done his knee at school), Adam Saliba, Michael DiBiase to name a few. Adelaide were also allowed 3 years worth of uncontracted players (which is how they got Greg Anderson). So whilst they were handcuffed in other ways (were only allowed to select 10 players who had previously been drafted but didnt go across to Victoria), the good far outweighted the bad for them.

And while many a Frogcake-chugging dickhead bemoans being frozen out of the draft, this was the top-10 in 1991:

1. John Hutton
2. Marcus Seecamp
3. Darren Kowal
4. Andrew McGovern
5. Jason Norrish
6. Paul Burton
7. Jeremy Guard
8. Michael Symons
9. Stephen O'Reilly
10. Andrew Lamprill

What a galaxy of stars compared to the virtual SA Origin team they were able to assemble...
