There’s so many types though

the best stopper may not be highly rated next to the best intercept player, and what about the best rebounder or best loose man?

There is no one size fits all answer to who is the best defender as there is so little true one on one defense these days and a lot of playing with extra numbers back. Andrews, Weitering and Grimes for discipline, May and Collins for involvement, Ridley, Haynes, McGovern, Vlastuin and Stewart for intercept. Howe, Crisp, Ryan,Sheppard, Sicily, McDonald, McKenzie, Balta, Coffield, Rampe, Williams and Crozier as the mark and move kickers. Apologies to the little men, but i hate typing too many names.

If you had to choose one to play on all sorts of opponents you can‘t pass up Grimes. Can play tall and small, can play the intercept role, can play one on one and is very good at reading play to peel off and be third man up. He’s the most well rounded defender in the game.

Spot on. Good bloke all round too. Same as his brother Jack. Hope his Mt Macedon Winery keeps delivering after retirement.

For impact on game Harris Andrews by a fair way. He controls the air, haven't seen many backmen do it as effectively as he does.

Others are better kicks, better rebounds, more versatile, more Richmond etc....

Grimes, Andrews and McGovern, maybe in that order. Grimes because he is so versatile, (although didn't have such a great year as previous few). Andrews because he is so good at defending in the air and MCGovern because he controls the area so well and actually takes marks, contested and 3rd man up.
