Who is currently the best keeper in the Premier League?

Maik Taylor (Birmingham)
Carlo Cudicini (Chelsea)
Tim Howard (Man. United)
Edwin Van der Sar (Fulham)
Shay Given (Newcastle)
Kasey Keller (Tottenham)
Jersey Dudek (Liverpool)
David Seaman (Man. City)
Jens Lehmann (Arsenal)
Mark Schwarzer (‘Boro)
Brad Friedel (Blackburn)
Shaka Hislop (Portsmouth)
Thomas Sorensen (Villa)
Dean Kiely (Charlton)
Ian Walker (Leicester)
Other?

My top three mentioned are my opinions of the best three keepers in the Premier League at the moment - the rest were randomly placed.

You've really got no clue.

Tim Howard has played what, less than a dozen EPL games, and it makes him one of the top three? I dont think so. I like the guy and I think he will be a good keeper, but less than 12 games is no measurement of his true ability. Just because he plays for United does not automatically put him so far ahead of the others. Or have you been looking at the Goals Against column and making decisions based on that??

Jussi Jaskelainen (sp) is an obvious one you have forgotten, as well as Richard Wright, Paul Jones and Michael Oakes. Great poll

Schwarzer is the worst by a street
You wouldn't say that if:
a) he wasn't Australian and therefore has a higher profile then other keepers in Australia
b) you followed Boro and realised after a shaky start he has been in very good form.
c) you knew that last season he had the second best shot save percentage in the league
d) he played for a bigger club (see Tim Howard, as Stam said he has kept for 12 games but because he plays for Man U he is the best thing since sliced bread)
e) you knew we had conceded 6 goals in our last 9 league / cup games with Scwarzer in goals for 8 of them

Schwarzer is not one of the better keepers in the league, but he is also not one of the worst. If he was so bad he wouldn't have been the number one keeper in a (mainly) premier league side for the last 6 years

i've always though cudicini was good, probably the most agile/athletic goalkeeper in the league (now barthez is gone). has the odd howler though.

While I wouldn't go as far as to say Niemi is the best keeper how could you not even rate him in the top 15 keepers?

Did you see that triple save against Arsenal last season?

How did we do so well last season? Attacking flair? :p

Cudicini for me.

Taylor and Howard are getting plaudits at the moment more for the quality of the defence in front of them rather than their actual performances IMO. Neither (at this stage) are close to top 3.

I thought Niemi was injured, or is he back now?

Good keeper though. Very shrewd signing.

a) i'll pay that
b) Who would follow Boro? the definition of mediocrity
c) Stats don't work for keepers. Where were the shots taken from?
d) He's not good enough to play for a bigger club
e) see c)

Perhaps a bit harsh to label Schwarzer the worst keeper in the league. Don't see much of some of the lower teams but i guess there would be worse keepers than him.

Schwarzer has horrid foot skills and at times seems unco-ordinated but as you said he is a good shot stopper.

I guess my view of him may be clouded by my annoyance that he remains Australias #1 mainly because the league he plays in has a higher profile in Australia.

Lehmann.

Should be Germany's #1.
Has looked distinctly average to me so far this season except for one game where he looked distinctively p1ssed.

Not even close

Been back for a few games now.

Paul Jones had only conceded a few goals all season but was dropped as soon as Niemi was fit. He's now resigned to being the #2 keeper and will probably leave during the next transfer window to keep his international career alive.

Niemi was definitely a great signing. Wouldn't mind it if Rupert Lowe actually dug into the clubs coffers and invested in a creative midfielder but we couldn't actually spend money again. :)

I know that the stats can lie, but here is a list with regard to the number of saves made compared to shots on target.

Jens Lehmann(ARS) 30 40 75%
Thomas Sorenson(AST) 34 48 71%
Stefan Postma(AST) 1 2 50%
Maik Taylor(BRM) 45 50 90%
Ian Bennett(BRM) 4 7 57%
Brad Friedel(BLA) 38 60 63%
Jussi Jaaskelainen(BOL) 34 53 64%
Dean Kiely(CHA) 34 46 74%
Simon Royce(CHA) 7 10 70%
Carlo Cudicini(CHE) 27 36 75%
Nigel Martyn(EVE) 23 32 72%
Richard Wright(EVE) 16 21 76%
Steve Simonsen(EVE) 5 8 62%
Edwin Van der Sar(FUL) 41 57 72%
Mark Crossley(FUL) 4 6 67%
Paul Robinson(LEE) 44 75 59%
Ian Walker(LEI) 43 64 67%
Danny Coyne(LEI) 2 2 100%
Jerzy Dudek(LIV) 33 47 70%
David Seaman(MAC) 34 46 74%
Kevin Ellegaard(MAC) 1 4 25%
Tim Howard(MAN) 26 33 79%
Mark Schwarzer(MID) 30 45 67%
Carlo Nash(MID) 3 3 100%
Shay Given(NEW) 40 58 69%
Shaka Hislop(POR) 37 53 70%
Antti Niemi(SOU) 19 20 95%
Paul Jones(SOU) 26 32 81%
Kasey Keller(TOT) 48 64 75%
Michael Oakes(WOL) 34 53 64%
Matt Murray(WOL) 7 12 58%

There is a rating system which is based on statistics for goalkeepers in the EPL. At the midway point of last season Mark Schwarzer was rated the best in the EPL under that system after being rated last at the same point the season before.

All hail Danny Coyne and Carlo Nash!!!!!!! Have you ever seen Carlo play? At one stage he was Man City's 5th keeper after Steve Howey, who is an outfield player.

Seriously, what a load of bollocks.

My top 3 left out of the original poll (order varies):

Robinson
Jaaskalainen
Niemi

Would all definitely be in the Top Ten, which none of Howard, Dudek or Lehmann would be yet (but, no, cry the crowds, they play for ManYou, Liverpool and Arsenal, who are the only teams in this League, like in Scotland where there's just Keltic and Rangers).

Answer: it varies over time. Over the last season and a half, at various times, I thought that Given, Cudabeenanythingcini, Niemi, Taylor, Friedel, Kiely and van der Sar were all on top of their and everyone else's game.

Robinson in the top ten? Pfft. I have seen this guy over the past month and he has been pathetic. No ability whatsoever.

Jaaskalainen should have been replaced by Dudek in the poll - my mistake.

Good to see Cudicini winning the poll, anyway, but I think Taylor has had a great start to the year and, on current form, is one of the best GK in the EPL.

You said it. I'm not Nashers beiggest fan but the above statement is absolute bollocks.

To judge the quality of a keeper you have to judge how he goes over a sustained period of time. For that reason Robinson is not rubbish, even though he has had a rough time of it lately, Cudicini didn't go from a good keeper to a bad one overnight after the Arsenal game.

Incidentally United supporters can get ready for several games with Carrol in goals, it has been confirmed that Howard will miss several matches over the next few years due to World Cup qualifiers. I remember how much of an impact these qualifiers had on Paolo Wanchope before last 2002, very unwelcome news I would think, particularly with Barthez heading out in January.

Finally the Mirror seem to be pushing the idea that City will buy Kirkland for £5 million in January. I can't see it myself but they have repeated the rumour several times now. Apparently Kirkland is not happy being the number 2 and wants out.

Spoken by a person who eviedntly doesn't have a clue about keepers. Put any of your top 3 behind Leeds defence and see if they do any better.

Mate, I have followed Soccer for a little over a year, so of course I’m not going to know everything. However, from the games that I have seen, Paul Robinson isn’t the strongest keeper in the EPL.

I have learnt a fair bit for a tyro, so I am pretty happy with that. Just don’t give me grief just because I haven’t been the fan that you have been for all these years.

For what it’s worth, I used to dislike Soccer. I used to think it was stupid and boring. That was until the 2002 World Cup came around and it was from that moment that I realised that I actually liked Soccer.

And it’s a great sport – second to real footy. ;)
