A few days on the main board, I posted (copied below) what I thought would be our best ever team since the existance of the Crows.

What are other posters thoughts?

I'm sure I have missed someone obvious...

B: Hart, Rutten, Bassett
HB: Smart, Caven, Bickley (c)
C: Johnson, Ricciuto (vc), Goodwin
HF: D Jarman, M Stevens, Welsh
F: Edwards, Modra, Vardy
R: Rehn, McDermott, McLeod
I: Pittman, Robran, Burton, McGuinness

I've got Mickan and A Jarman for Pittman and Welsh

B Hart Rutten Johncock
HB M Bickley Caven Smart
C McLeod Ricciuto (c) G Anderson
HF J Klug M Stevens D Jarman
F T Bond T Modra P Vardy
R Rehn McDermott Goodwin
Int: A Jarman Pittman T Edwards N Bassett

Stiffy our best little defender ever by a country mile.

Couldn’t find two genuine wingman. Anderson was an all Australian in that postion and I think McLeod would burn there if played there. Macca should really be on the HBF but Smart was the best there and Bickley needs to start somewhere for his pure guts and leadership.

T Bond our only genuine small forward ever who could lead mark and kick a goal and more importantly front and centre crubming and a good kick (beats Lippy because he fumbled too much and no prenetration in his kick).

Pittman over Clarke due to an ability to also play centre half back.

Stevens over Robran due to consistency and commitment to the contest.
Couldn’t leave out Klug despite limited games. Was all class.

Compare Klug to Welsh for effort and effect per game played. No contest.

I think one game should be enough to qualify, but it would have to be a bloody good pig!:D
Klug is CHF & IMO Stevens & Robran deserve selection ahead of him,

Welsh = F flanker (surely better than Bond :p).

Not like for like IMO.

I cant think of anyone left out in Kane's team, maybe Liptak or A Jarman. Bit surprised that Scotty Welsh would get a game ahead of Liptak in his prime. And i agree with whoever said Clarke should be back up ruckman - maybe Pitto could slot in across the Half Back line, but who would miss out? Best coach is obviously out of Blighty or Neil Craig...

No contest for the coach M.Blight

A.Jarman would not even be a travelling emg in my side no time for him as a player what so ever.

Looks about right Kane. Interesting Rutten is the only tall, recruited in the last 9 years, to make the "best ever" side - says alot.

What was it you didn't like about him? The quick, deft handballs? The almost ingenius work in traffic? His ball-winning ability? The sublime clearance work? The exceptional ball handling? His lightning quick tackles in close? Yep, he stunk alright. The great tragedy about Andrew Jarman's career was that he was coached by Graham Cornes and Robert Shaw, neither of whom recognised genius when they saw it.

I could understand an argument for his exclusion based on perceptions of his behaviour pertaining to off-field issues, such as the time he declared himself unfit and refused to play despite being named and his alleged role in the player revolt that apparently contributed to Cornes' demise,

But purely as a player?

Arguably the most talented hands in the history of the game, ball magnet, renowned big game player and knew where the goals were.

His 110 games might be surpassed when this sort of task is revisited in 10 years, but his record is still good enough for at least the bench today.

No doubt A Jarman is around the mark of a best side - I couldn't quite squeeze him into my team.

Interested to see your team DT.

Funny the great tragedy for Cornes was Jarman's missed shot in the 93' prelim. Had he put that through the argument for coach of this great side would not be between Craig and Blight.

We got absolutely pantsed in that second half. Jarman's miss was criminal but the fact that Cornes always harps on about this miss and ignores the plethora of other errors and mistakes (both by coach and players) says plenty about him as a person.

- Rocca's infamous point (or was it a goal?) vs Brisbane
- Libba jumps into his teammates arms to celebrate... a behind vs us
- The Wayne Harms out of bounds vs Collingwood

People prefer to blame these one-off incidents rather than explore the much scarier option that perhaps they weren't good enough or could have done more.

Or perhaps it shows just how much a game of inches it is between glory and Columbia.

By the way Andrew Jarman was a true footballing genius, he'd make my team on skills alone but be borderline for the reasons you insinuated, he didn't cope or behave well when things didn't go his way, and therefore didnt meet the standards required when Blight came to the club.

Honourable Mention to W Carey, M Connell, T Bond, T Stenglein, S Welsh and B Stanfield ;)

Tossing up between Bond, Stevens and Vardy, but happy with my choices I think

Surely you guys can rustle up a better centre half back than Caven? I would nominate Pittman who was more than handy at that role or if not just go with Smart.

CHF is interesting with Stevens Klug and Robran being mentioned. On ability I would say Klug, but on output you'd have to go with Robran.

Forward pocket seems to be between Welsh and Vardy. I would go Welsh.

On output Ian Perrie (112 games/127 goals, 5 marks per game) has Robran (130 games/110 goals, 4 marks per game) covered.

Those rare 65-70m torps and his one stellar game - the 98 Prelim when he lined up on a comparitive dwarf - have clouded the thinking of many.

It's why I plumped for Stevo. Solid record despite spending a lot of time at CHB.
