After reading through the Watson thread, got me thinking about who would be the best FS combination in the game.

Then I realised that Gary Ablett Sr and Jr would win by the length of the Flemington straight.

But, in saying that, there has to be the second best in history, or the third best.

I'll kick it off with a few notable ones, but I've got no idea who would be the second best, I'm sure the oldies will be able to shed some light.

Silvagnis, Fletchers, Watsons, Clokes and Shaws are some of the more famous ones. It would really be subjective, and there'd be too few that have actually thoroughly seen both play.

There will be a few quality ones to discuss in 15-20 years with the likes of the Danihers, Libbas, Moores, Buckleys and Vineys looking the goods.

He's going to be a gun, very good footballer.

I'm not so sure that G.Ablett wins by the length of the Flemington straight - for one reason - the Kennedy family. Three generations of superstars, including one of the most famous coaches of all time, and I don't think anyone else can manage that! If looking at only one F/S combo, then yes he does, but you can't discount the Kennedys.

Apart from that, Watson is probably the next best in line. And you better throw Fletcher in there too - Essendon generally seem the best at this.

If you are looking at broader family lineage, probably the Daniher and Rioli families are the most powerful (Maurice, Dean, Cyril and Michael Long all relatives).

Langford is another who could be something, although form this season indicates not.

EDIT: Graham Cornes father of the Cornes boys is another.

Silvagnis, Fletchers, Watsons, Clokes and Shaws

Peter Hudson - 129 games, 727 goals, AFL legend
Paul Hudson - 245 games, 479 goals, All-Australian

Michael Tuck - 426 games, Hall of Fame, All-Australian, Victorian captain, 7 premierships
Shane Tuck - 173 games, 4046 disposals (avg 23.4)

As an all-round father-son combo, it's hard to go past Fos Williams/Mark Williams

11 x Premierships as players
10 X Premierships as coaches

Around 600 games played between them and approximately 900 games coached. Throw in a plethora of individual awards, hall of fame's and SOO honours and it's a pretty impressive resume.

Very underrated when compared to the Silvagni's, Fletcher's, Ablett's, Watson's etc

Whilst the Kennedy family has achieved a lot in football, even then, if we were to go by families, I'd rather have the Daniher clan, as they, IMO, achieved a greater deal as a family in football.

Am I alone in reading this and thought it was a typo? Paul Hudson played how many games???
Strewth.

Any combination of Kennedys have nothing on the Abletts. Seriously , Sr. and Jr. could be argued to be top 5 all time players. And if you want to extend the family tree past F-S then the Abletts have a few other branches that they can pick fruit from too.

He had a very good career, but isn't it a bit of a stretch calling John Kennedy Jr a superstar? If he's a superstar then we'd have to create a new term for about 10 of his teammates because superstar wouldn't do justice.

good nomination.

Ablett's in my time.
Tim and Jobe not far behind.

Agree. For sheer brilliance, it's impossible to look past the Ablett's. They are on a level of their own.

Underneath, I couldn't split the Silvangi's, Fletcher's, Watson's and Williams's. You could easily mount an argument that one combo is greater than the other however these sets don't compare to Gary Snr/Jr

I'm not sure why the Hudsons aren't mentioned alongside the Silvagnis and Fletchers.
Peter is an AFL legend and his son, Paul was a gun All-Australian half forward.

Agree as a family. That's why I didn't include them in comment on the best family (IMO only the Rioli family challenges the Daniher family). Only on the best F/S/GS bit.

Fair. I guess as a Hawks fan the Kennedys will always mean more to us than anyone else.
