Re Manny Liddy what is the Greatest debut game for Port Adelaide in the AFL?
I saw Greg Anderson debut in the SANFL 17 years old kicked 6 from half forward against a very strong Sturt side in front of nearly 20,000 at Footy Park.
Nothing has beaten it since.

Ollie Wines vs Melbourne?

JHF vs Brisbane, Round 1 2023?

Hamish Hartlett vs Hawthorn, Round 4 2009?

Aaron Fiora had an absolute belter on debut in the SNAFL.
Steven Williams called it the hest debut game he'd evercwitnessed.
Sadly Aaron didn't do much more after that epic start.

Proper debut games - Hartlett, Wines, SPP, S.Gray.

Gray was a bit older than the others though.

I was at that game and I agree it is probably the most memorable first game I've seen, I still remember being there. He was a 17 year old schoolboy (I think Port moved him from his college during the year to Woodville High so the archaic sanfl college rule didn't take him away during the season).

Sturt went on to play in the grand final that year and as I recall broke out to lead at half time, but then we pulled them back and won comfortably with a 10 goal to 5 second half, with Anderson playing a stunning best on ground game from the wing. But one thing I hate to do is pop the 6 goal balloon. He kicked 1 goal. Port's leading goalkicker that day was Alan Gill with 5.

Honourable mentions to Andy Porplycia's debut game and Wayne Mahney's. Both still in my mind.

Neil Hawke in his third game for Port kicked 15 goals but was dropped 2 weeks later when Rex Johns recovered from injury (that is before my time but a part of Port folklore).

Hard to go past Wines in round 1 2013, he was brilliant and that was an awesome win after a couple years of pain.

Justin Westhoff and Robbie Gray vs Hawthorn, R10 2007

I can’t remember another example of a pair of sleeper picks both looking like they could be the most technically-gifted players on the team already.

I fell immediately in love with Gray that game

Doesn't count but Butters 2nd game in the wet v Carlton. That was when it was obvious we had another Robbie coming through.

I remember Fiora's debut and thought it was very impressive. Didn't go on with it.

Also remember Alan Didak's debut. He was in the paper in his school uniform with his teacher who played for West, can't remember who. Did ok that day and we know the rest.

Scott Bassett had the worst debut. Didn't leave the bench.

I seem to remember Nathan Buckley’s senior debut for Port Adelaide late in 1991 was pretty good, though I have nothing to back it up except my fading memory. He’d been struggling with injury early in the year in the 19’s, but got healthy, elevated to ressies and kicked 5 from a HF role, then straight into league and never looked back.

Also doesn't count but Butchachaaa with 6 goals in his second game.

Actually these should count in the same way as the urban myth that Matt Rowell polled 3 votes in his first 3 games counts, you just have to ignore the fact it was his 2nd, 3rd and 4th games.

I too saw Aaron Fiora's debut for the Maggies, he took off from the outer side of the centre square as the ump was bouncing the ball to start the game, he picked it up at full pace and then did a sweeping right hand turn in front of the old grand stand, ran to just outside the 50 metre line while bouncing the ball 2 or 3 times, and then kicked it to the sweet spot about 20 metres out from the member's end goal.

Came here to post this. What a tantalising moment that was.

Sitting near the Richmond talent scouts were you? They thought he was better than Pav.

Fiora was BOG in his first 2 games.

I can recall Anderson kicking a bag against Sturt at Football Park early 80’s?

He might have but it wasn't that game. I even found the Budget from the following week that had match details. He was best on, but only 1 goal.

Re NeilHawke Rex John’s was playing in Perth with the SA State Team and the club rule was u got your spot back in the A grade.

I reckon Rohan Smith kicked 5 on debut.
