Women’s Footy 1947.
The South Melbourne club came up with a novelty idea to host a women’s game of footy to raise funds for post war recovery of Britain.
The call went out for women to fill up two teams to play. So many responded that most VFL clubs ended up being represented by having the women allocated and one planned game turned into a Lightning Premiership.
Then the day in July came and 20,000 turned up. But nothing came of it and women’s footy retreated in the public eye.
A lost opportunity of 70 years ago.
A lost bit of footy history.
The Exhibition Ground. A footy ground right out front of the Royal Exhibition Building in the Carlton Gardens.
Footy with a great backdrop, but it’s long gone.
