Um Simpson's a midfielder who BTW joined Marc Murphy in systematically destroying the Weagles Juddless 2nd tier midfield at Subi early in 2006. Get to see that game? Weagles are accumulating a nice collection of midfield tagger types - didn't work that day, but they were instrumental in JW's successful Judd-one-man-game-plan. :)

Was that the game where the eagles only showed up to play for one quarter of football and still won?

By the way, was it all of simpsons 11 possesions for the day that helped destroy the eagles 2nd tier midfield?

Correct me if im wrong, but isnt Wells another Jared Brennan???
Hes had a couple of good games here and there but no consistency. Im not trying to have a go at him as im seriously expecting a Top 10 Brownlow year from him next year but just pointing out.

Goddard and Simpson have had 1 good season (werent bad in 05 either) but you gotta expect that considering there still very young. So...
1. Goddard
2. Selwood (adam variety)
3. Simpson
4. Rivers
5. Salopek

some people here are criminally under-rating rivers, you would take him 99% of the time

Agreed but mainly because of hes position that he plays. Bulk good midfielders but hardly any good CHB these days.

Gee - when you ask people to be objective and remove their bias from a poll - the cream of the knob supporters really rises to the top.

4 out of Selwood's 6 votes are from WCE supporters.
3 out of Simpson's 7 votes are from Blues supporters.

Possibly says something about the players.
Definitely says something about the supporters.

Idiots.

Well to be honest the bias was probably expected, it is BigFooty after all. I think Goddard has been the more impressive to date, but even he really only came good this year. In the end I think Wells will turn out to be the best, and when the Roos get some of their young up and coming midfielders happening and he is able to play his natural instinctive game we'll see that pretty clearly.

Simpson has been value for Carlton but my thoughts on him are that he's been more a player that has been great given where he was picked up in the draft as opposed to the best out of them. Unfortunately for us Rivers is injury prone, and doesn't look like changing that any time soon. Agree about Selwood. While he doesn't look overawed by the jump to AFL, he really is just a tagger.

The bias is alright in the actual thread - and in reality ofcourse it will happen because you see so much more of them - but surely it isn't that hard to overlook it in the poll just to get an less skewed idea?

On Wells - a few in this thread has seen he is massively inconsistent.
He is 21 and has already had three top 10 and two top 5 B&F finishes (4th in 2004, 8th in 2005, 3rd in 2006). Plus has won more than a few games off his own boot with last quarter heroics.

Still - if he consistently plays at his highest level - and gets the required protection from the rest of the midfield group - he will be close to the best midfielder in the league

I'm not going on proven talent. Simpson has taken longer to develop than Goddard and thus doesn't have as many runs on the board. I am going on who I would rather in my team. IMO, Simpson is going to add much more to our future structure than Goddard would have. Also, I would not swap Simpson for any of the other players in the 02draft.
you've got to be kidding. as much as i love Simmo i'd take goddard any day of the week. Goddard plays just about every possie on the ground other than ruck if needed, while Simpson is an outside runner with good skills. love him to death but goddard anyday.

Big Cox you really are a troll who doesn't watch footy.

I had Simpson first, has had a superb season and was easily one of our best. Has more room for improvement as well.

Goddards problem is his position. Is he a frontline mid, or a running HBF?

Although I dont think Watson is the best of this bunch - I tihnk he is grossly underestimated and will, over the next 2 seasons certianly be included with the Goddards....

Some statistics on last season:

Player Totals for Season 2006

Player MT K H D Avg M Avg HO Avg T Avg FF FA G Avg B SC Rat Avg
Adam Selwood 26 267 239 506 19.5 147 5.7 2 0.1 72 2.8 34 24 8 0.3 6 54 2026 77.9
Brendon Goddard 22 321 156 477 21.7 177 8 17 0.8 71 3.2 9 17 10 0.5 9 69 2134 97
Jobe Watson 21 203 276 479 22.8 114 5.4 2 0.1 69 3.3 20 8 6 0.3 7 43 1820 86.7
Kade Simpson 22 296 124 420 19.1 147 6.7 3 0.1 53 2.4 17 9 11 0.5 8 74 1856 84.4

Goddard the best of these 4, I'd rate Watson as second and take your pick from the other two....I tihnk of the 4, all up and coming mids with perhaps selwood being used as more of a negater, boring type. The others should become quite productive and quality!!

1: Goddard
2: Simpson
3: Rivers
4: Wells
5: Watson
6: Salopek
7: Minson
8: Selwood
9: Ebert
10: Malceski
11: Schammer
12: McIntosh

He was the best for the wooden spooners. Selwood was one of the top 5 for the premiers. Figure it out

Selwood at 8 is a joke vinnie. Clearly dont watch enough footy. Like most Collingwood fans they only watch one game a week

Big Hamish with no votes - I reckon if this poll is done in a year we would laugh at that.

204cm, 108 kilo, can kick goals from outside 50 on angles and is very good below his knees allowing him to crumb and snap goals.. Probably on course in terms of development for a ruckman of his size anyway, but would be further ahead if he hadn't missed a year with injury

Will get an even bigger load in the ruck this year and needs to improve his hitout totals - but a very talented big man is Hamish.

Will likely end up more valuable than the majority of midfielders in this group - but is obviously taking longer to make an impact. He is a cert to be better than Minson.

salopek is the only one I would consider to make way for Selwood....

Big cox, can you provide arguments for Selwood being above the other 7 on Vinnie's list ?

And don't use your old personal fav - "dud, he's got a premiership medal..."

Ill do it. Selwood is a very underrated player. Easily in our top 5 for the year.

Selwood has what every other players in the list dont. Versatility. He started off in the midfield during the year but when Nicoski got injured he moved to back pocket and replaced him. For a 21 year old in a foreign position he did VERY well. At times in the finals series he was playing fullback such is his versatility. Shut down Brad Johnson after he tore Glass up at the start of the game and kept him goalless when he was on him. He reads the play better then any player we have. Took the most marks out of any player in our team because of it.

Selwood gets 19.5 possessions but keeps his opponents to very few touches alot of the time. Hes a tagger who gets his own ball. In general Selwood has very few flaws. Hes a good tackler. Hes got OK disposal and hes a great mark. He is easily top 3 of the bunch with Goddard and Wells

Selwood is just one of the several servicable Weagle midfield tagger brigade. He's not even close to the talent level of Goddard or Wells. :)

Not a midfielder anymore. Due to his success in defense he will play there and Nicoski will move into the middle of the ground

Nicoski. Mm, the Weagles really lack elite young talent to backup the Judd-one-man show. The Weagles 2nd tier midfielder/taggers have been grossly over-rated because of Judd. :)

Just out of pure curiosity who is our 2nd tier. Technically tier is referring to 3. Judd Cousins Kerr our our best 3. So in reality you think Stenglein Braun Embley are garbage

Selwood Nicoski Fletcher would make up our 3rd tier with Waters Butler our 4th tier

Cousins is very good. Kerr and Embley are good. The others... well...nothing special. :)

Sounds like yout describing Jason Laycock, funnily enough taken with the pick straight after Hamish.

Hopefully he can string more than a couple of games together before breaking down.

Funny how you go 'talent level of Goddard or Wells' but leave out Brennan. Ever since when does talent automatically mean success.

ALthough he doesnt have as much natural talent as the ones you mention, he has been consistently good since game 1.

So you pretty much need 5 really good players or above and fill the rest of the team in with garbage. From your judging criteria, Carlton will win the premiership in a year or two.

Troll.
