Dustin Fletcher. There is no possible way you can put any argument forward to say there is a better fullback in the league. He simply has it all.

Bias aside....it would have to be Dustin Fletcher. You could post a good case for Hay this seasonalso, but Dustin was killing em before he got himself injured.

When posing this kind of question, you must take into account the form of last season, and possibly the year before. This is the best guage of who has been performing in this position, week in week out, on a consistent basis.

For mine...you can't go past Fletch! Two All Australian selections in the past 2 years can't be wrong! :D

i have a few questions..

why arent..

Simon Prestigiacomo
shane wakelin and
mark richardson in this list???

LOL

by the far the 3 best in the league!

Perhaps you have just seen more of Fletcher than Hay?

No matter. The fact that Hay is even being compared to Fletcher at this stage says a lot for how good this kid could be.

In 1998, Shane Crawford called Jon Hay "the next James Hird". At the time I scoffed but now...

Silgvani? Do the results of the poll thus far reflect on the ridiculousness in that shirt lifting scragger being named full back of the century? Not even the best full back of his era! Geoff Southby, David Dench, Gary Malarkey, Jocka Todd, Fred Goldsmith.......... Silgvani wouldn't blow wind up thier arses. In the modern era I'd take Gary Pert ahead of shirt lifter Silgvani anyday.

Dunkley? How did that ärse fairy get on the poll? Can he even kick a football? Why not throw Mark Richardson up there.

What about Chris Langford? Now he was a fullback. To bad the whoreks have an army of calendar boys playing for them now.

Hay, that tackle he did has put him on my very good player list although i still think rawlings is a better player.

The Hawk supporters are the only ones who are comparing him to Fletcher, and really, you can't be serious.

Silvagni's a great player, but i'd take Fletcher at full back any day. Or Langford. In fact, didn't Ablett say Langford was the best full back he played on?

That's gotta say something.

A few things actually.

It was Topdon who compared Hay with Fletcher originally. Even then he had to really stretch to properly qualify his arguement that Fletcher was better.

My point was simply that Hay, now, is being compared to Fletcher at the same age and development.

But, by all means continue the "rolleyes" theme! It's your reputation on the line if you are saying that Jon Hay isn't going to be a star!

Probably Fletcher - but I've always been secretly impressed with Mick Martyn, they're both so mobile for big men.

But I would love to compare them with all other things being equal - ie. Fletcher and Hay without such strong teams to back them up. For example, I reckon the best FB is Ashley McIntosh, but oweing both to injuries and a weak side his performance in the last couple of seasons has appeared rather poor.

I wish I had the football insight to compare only their skills rather than coupling them with that of their team.

It seems that many in this discussion are dismissive of any comparison between Hay and Fletcher.

Let me say that Fletcher is a top class footballer. But I'd be interested to read from those who claim that there is 'no comparison' between Fletcher and Hay what facets of the game that Fletcher is so superior in.

Also, don't be fooled by saying "Hay is playing in a strong team". It's a guess, but I'm fairly confident in saying that Hawthorn would have had the ball inside its defensive fifty more times than any other team in the eight so far. In close games this year we've generally had fifteen to twenty less entries into our fifty for similar scorelines to our opponents. Hay is dealing with as many contests as any other quality full back in the competition.

Well I think he is pretty close to, if not the equal of Fletcher after the weekend's performance. Gave Carey the biggest bath he would have copped in about 10 years...no touches in a half... the king my butt

And before all you North supporters jump up and down and say he is injured...well why did he play then?? Was a liability the whole day for your side, you virtually played 1 short.

As for Hay, I've seen him beaten twice in the past year and a half I reckon, is an out and out superstar - After Saturday's performance he can just go and pick up his All-Australian guernsey right now! I mean, how many players in the league would be able to stop David King like that?

But Fletcher last year was brilliant, so he has the runs on the board...but I think without doubt Hay is Hawthorn's most valuable player.

Umm.....So in all seriousness, you could guarantee Carey was not injured could you? I mean a baby crawling could move faster than he was. He was definitely injured and any non-biased supporter could see this. I don't know how J.Hay plays in his other matches, but you can't say he's a great player for beating THE KING, who was really injured. I did play very well though. Has got a bit of speed...

That was the worst decision that was made this year. I still can't beleive they let him play, and I can't beleive he said he was right, when he wasn't. He let his side down.

On the topic, Fletcher by far. He is agile, has speed, and really damages teams with his attack off the backline. ( That takes a lot to say - I hate Essendon!!:D )
